Abstract Fish fin rays constitute a sophisticated control system for ray-finned fish, facilitating versatile locomotion within complex fluid environments. Despite extensive research on the kinematics and hydrodynamics of fish locomotion, the intricate control strategies in fin-ray actuation remain largely unexplored. While deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has demonstrated potential in managing complex nonlinear dynamics; its trial-and-error nature limits its application to problems involving computationally demanding environmental interactions. This study introduces a cutting-edge off-policy DRL algorithm, interacting with a fluid–structure interaction (FSI) environment to acquire intricate fin-ray control strategies tailored for various propulsive performance objectives. To enhance training efficiency and enable scalable parallelism, an innovative asynchronous parallel training (APT) strategy is proposed, which fully decouples FSI environment interactions and policy/value network optimization. The results demonstrated the success of the proposed method in discovering optimal complex policies for fin-ray actuation control, resulting in a superior propulsive performance compared to the optimal sinusoidal actuation function identified through a parametric grid search. The merit and effectiveness of the APT approach are also showcased through comprehensive comparison with conventional DRL training strategies in numerical experiments of controlling nonlinear dynamics.

                            Effects of antagonistic muscle actuation on the bilaminar structure of ray-finned fish in propulsion
                        
                    
    
            In this study, the effects of antagonistic muscle actuation on the propulsion of a bilaminar-structure fish fin ray were investigated using a two-dimensional computational flow–structure interaction (FSI) model. The structure and material properties of the model were based on the realistic biological data of the sunfish fin. The effect of muscle actuation was modelled using root displacement offset between the two hemitrichs. Parametric FSI simulations were conducted by assuming a sinusoidal function of the offset over a cycle and varying the amplitude and phase difference between the actuations and pitching/plunging motions. The results show that the phase of muscle actuation is a critical factor affecting its effects. Three performance regions can be identified with different phase ranges, including a thrust-favour region, an efficiency-favour region and a thrust-efficiency-unfavour region. In each region, the relationships among the root actuations, fin-ray kinematics, vortex dynamics and resulting performance are studied and discussed. Furthermore, a strong positive correlation between the trailing–leading amplitude ratio and thrust coefficient as well as a negative relationship between the efficiency and angle of attack at the centre of mass of the fin ray are observed.

            Numerical studies are presented on the propulsive performance and vortex dynamics of multiple hydrofoils pitching in an in-line configuration. The study is motivated by the quest to understand the hydrodynamics of multiple fin–fin interactions in fish swimming. Using the flow conditions (Strouhal and Reynolds numbers) obtained from a solitary pitching foil of zero net thrust, the effect of phase differences between neighboring foils on the hydrodynamic performance is examined both in position-fixed two- and three-foil systems at Reynolds number Re = 500. It is found that the threefoil system achieves a thrust enhancement up to 118% and an efficiency enhancement up to 115% compared to the two-foil system. Correspondingly, the leading-edge vortex (LEV) and the trailing-edge vortex (TEV) of the hindmost foil combine to form a ‘2P’ wake structure behind the three-foil system with the optimal phase differences instead of a ‘2S’ wake, a coherent wake pattern observed behind the optimal two-foil system. The finding suggests that a position-fixed three-foil system can generate a ‘2P’ wake to achieve the maximum thrust production and propulsive efficiency simultaneously by deliberately choosing the undulatory phase for each foil. When increasing Reynolds number to 1000, though the maximum thrust and propulsive efficiency are not achieved simultaneously, the most efficient case still produces more thrust than most of the other cases. Besides, the study on the effects of three-dimensionality shows that when the foils have a larger aspect ratio, the three-foil system has a better hydrodynamic performance, and it follows a similar trend as the two-dimensional (2D) foil system.             null (Ed.)In this work we investigate the effects of two distinct actuation methods on the hydrodynamics of elastic rectangular plates oscillating at resonance. Plates are driven by plunging motion at the root or actuated by a distributed internal bending moment at Reynolds numbers between 500 and 4000. The latter actuation method represents internally actuated smart materials and emulates the natural ability of swimming animals to continuously change their shapes with muscles. We conduct experiments with plunging elastic plates and piezoelectric plate actuators that are simulated using a fully coupled three-dimensional computational model based on the lattice Boltzmann method. After experimental validation the computational model is employed to probe plate hydrodynamics for a wide range of parameters, including large oscillation amplitudes which prompts nonlinear effects. The comparison between the two actuation methods reveals that, for the same level of tip deflection, externally actuated plates significantly outperform internally actuated plates in terms of thrust production and hydrodynamic efficiency. The reduced performance of internally actuated plates is associated with their suboptimal bending shapes which leads to a trailing edge geometry with enhanced vorticity generation and viscous dissipation. Furthermore, the difference in actuation methods impacts the inertia coefficient characterizing the plate oscillations, especially for large amplitudes. It is found that the inertia coefficient strongly depends on the tip deflection amplitude and the Reynolds number, and actuation method, especially for larger amplitudes.more » « less

            Abstract Several fishes swim by undulating a thin and elongated median fin while the body is mostly kept straight, allowing them to perform forward and directional maneuvers. We used a robotic vessel with similar fin propulsion to determine the thrust scaling and efficiency. Using precise force and swimming kinematics measurements with the robotic vessel, the thrust generated by the undulating fin was found to scale with the square of the relative velocity between the free streaming flow and the wave speed. A hydrodynamic efficiency is presented based on propulsive force measurements and modelling of the power required to oscillate the fin laterally. It was found that the propulsive efficiency has a broadly high performance versus swimming speed, with a maximum efficiency of 75%. An expression to calculate the swimming speed over wave speed was found to depend on two parameters: A p / A e (ratio between body frontal area to fin swept area) and C D / C x (ratio of body drag to fin thrust coefficient). The models used to calculate propulsive force and free-swimming speed were compared with experimental results. The broader impacts of these results are discussed in relation to morphology and the function of undulating fin swimmers. In particular, we suggest that the ratio of fin and body height found in natural swimmers could be due to a trade-off between swimming efficiency and swimming speed.more » « less

            Gorb, S. (Ed.)Through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a model manta ray body, the hydrodynamic role of manta-like bioinspired flapping is investigated. The manta ray model motion is reconstructed from synchronized high-resolution videos of manta ray swimming. Rotation angles of the model skeletal joints are altered to scale the pitching and bending, resulting in eight models with different pectoral fin pitching and bending ratios. Simulations are performed using an in-house developed immersed boundary method-based numerical solver. Pectoral fin pitching ratio (PR) is found to have significant implications in the thrust and efficiency of the manta model. This occurs due to more optimal vortex formation and shedding caused by the lower pitching ratio. Leading edge vortexes (LEVs) formed on the bottom of the fin, a characteristic of the higher PR cases, produced parasitic low pressure that hinders thrust force. Lowering the PR reduces the influence of this vortex while another LEV that forms on the top surface of the fin strengthens it. A moderately high bending ratio (BR) can slightly reduce power consumption. Finally, by combining a moderately high BR = 0.83 with PR = 0.67, further performance improvements can be made. This enhanced understanding of manta-inspired propulsive mechanics fills a gap in our understanding of the manta-like mobuliform locomotion. This motivates a new generation of manta-inspired robots that can mimic the high speed and efficiency of their biological counterpart.more » « less
