Title: On Fostering Creative Collaborations and Future Directions
This commentary focuses on reflections involving the special issue on Teaching and Learning Mathematics and Computing in Multilingual Contexts and the important role that Teachers College Record has played in fostering creative interdisciplinary collaborations among researchers, graduate students, teachers, K-12 students, and parents. A discussion is included on how participating as a Guest Lead Editor of this special issue afforded opportunities to learn more about projects that integrate mathematics and computing as well as transformations that have impacted the work we do in our respective fields. Multilingual contexts contribute much to our understanding of global perspectives on mathematics education. Taking up a memorable moment that involved such a context, I discuss future directions for the Teachers College Record as we consider reaching to multilingual audiences.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Research has affirmed the importance of asset-based family partnerships, yet it does not often recognize the complementary roles of multilingual caregivers and teachers to enact culturally sustaining mathematics education. Our theoretical framework brings together the perspectives and tools of positioning theory and community solidarity through a lesson study that integrated the participation of caregivers. Our research questions explore ways that caregivers, teachers, and university facilitators participate in and position each other and themselves for learning throughout a mathematics lesson study and how hierarchical positions are disrupted. Using positioning theory, we analyzed the discourse from a year-long study group with teachers and caregivers of multilingual children ages 7–10 in the USA. Our findings describe four events that underscore moment-to-moment interactions between participants in which they situate themselves and their work within racialized storylines and disrupt typical power hierarchies that might have emerged. We find several ways the principles of community solidarity, which undergirded our lesson study model, created new opportunities for educators and multilingual caregivers to be positioned as witnesses, advocates, partners, and co-designers to work towards culturally sustaining mathematics education for multilingual students. We conclude with implications for future mathematics education partnerships to co-construct mathematics learning opportunities that affirm multilingual students’ cultural and linguistic identities.

  2. Abstract It is important to understand how students reason in K-12 integrated STEM settings to better prepare teachers to engage their students in integrated STEM tasks. To understand the reasoning that occurs in these settings, we used the lens of collective argumentation, specifically attending to the types of warrants elementary students and their teachers provided and accepted in integrated STEM contexts and how teachers supported students in providing these warrants. We watched 103 h of classroom instruction from 10 elementary school teachers and analyzed warrants that occurred in arguments in mathematics, coding, and integrated contexts to develop a typology of warrants contributed in mathematics and coding arguments. We found that these students made their warrants explicit the majority of the time, regardless of the teacher’s presence or absence. When teachers were present, they supported argumentation in various ways; however, they offered less support in integrated contexts. Additionally, we found students relied more on visual observations in coding contexts than in mathematics or integrated contexts, where they often provided warrants based on procedures required to accomplish a task. These findings have implications for improving integrated STEM instruction through engaging students in argumentation.

    Increasingly in K–12 schools, students are gaining access to computational thinking (CT) and computer science (CS). This access, however, is not always extended to students with disabilities. One way to increase CT and CS (CT/CS) exposure for students with disabilities is through preparing special education teachers to do so. In this study, researchers explore exposing special education preservice teachers to the ideas of CT/CS in the context of a mathematics methods course for students with disabilities or those at risk of disability. Through analyzing lesson plans and reflections from 31 preservice special education teachers, the researchers learned that overall emerging promise exists with regard to the limited exposure of preservice special education teachers to CT/CS in mathematics. Specifically, preservice teachers demonstrated the ability to include CT/CS in math lesson plans and showed understanding of how CT/CS might enhance instruction with students with disabilities via reflections on these lessons. The researchers, however, also found a need for increased experiences and opportunities for preservice special education teachers with CT/CS to more positively impact access for students with disabilities.

  5. When implementing lessons connecting advanced undergraduate mathematics to school mathematics, challenges arise for faculty and for the undergraduate students. The Mathematical Education of Teachers as an Application of Undergraduate Mathematics (META Math) project has created, piloted, and field-tested lessons for undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses typically part of a mathematics major that leads to secondary mathematics teacher certification. Lessons in calculus, discrete mathematics, algebra, and statistics explicitly link topics in college mathematics with high school mathematics topics prospective teachers will eventually teach. The goal of this poster presentation is to discuss our preliminary observations of the challenges faced by faculty and undergraduate students when implementing or using these lessons. We also wish to gather feedback and suggestions on the study design and potential directions for further research.
