Title: Global Undergraduate Research Landscape Analysis and Its Effect on 4th Industrial Revolution
Abstract Undergraduate level research engagements can aid the students in learning about the current ongoing innovations and shape them to become an efficient workforce for the future. However, it is poorly managed globally, including in Bangladesh, because it is difficult to track due to the scattered nature of this information. InNeed Intelligent Cloud, along with the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and National Science Foundation(NSF) of USA, aims to tackle this issue through the BLUMER research project. Based on the researchers’ research study, we created a searchable database with a web-based search interface that searches through the awarded projects data of the National Science Foundation (NSF) website, which is stored in the AWS cloud database. It also provides an analytical overview of the undergraduate research data through an analytical dashboard that provides numerical insights into the current research landscape around theUSA. The aim of the system is to guide the students, researchers, and supervisors in their desired research interests. By establishing an evaluation metric for understanding undergraduate level research production, in the future, we can build upon this and focus on the commercialization of this project whichwould enable global outreach and connection. This will help create an iterative process thatwould promote undergraduate research among students at an early stage and build a technologically enabled and industry-focused workforce. So, it can aid in students’ theoretical and applied skills development and create an efficient workforce that can lead the 4th industrial revolution in various fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Automation, IoT and Smart Agriculture, Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, etc.  more » « less

  1. The International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) focuses on developing a diverse, globally engaged STEM workforce through international research experiences. This NSF IRES project aims to develop a portable point-of-care testing (POCT) device for efficient detection of infectious pathogens by integrating microfluidic devices and a filter-free wavelength Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) optical sensor in a portable platform. The program supports an 8-week-long summer research experience at Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT) in Japan for a cohort of undergraduate and graduate students. This paper reports on the first year of the program.

  2. The National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program is effective in assisting two-year college (2YC) institutions of higher education to improve the education of technicians in science and engineering, yet grant proposals from 2YCs to ATE (and NSF as a whole) have declined in number over the past decade. The problem of NSF proposals declining in numbers is multifaceted, though data demonstrates that both 2YCs and NSF can reverse or mitigate the decline in ATE proposals through identified measures; 2YCs can change their grants culture through specific institutional changes, and NSF can aid 2YCs to build their capacity to develop competitive proposals through mentoring and professional development sustainably. This article discusses data, insights, and solutions through the lens of two NSF ATE projects: Project Vision (a mentoring project) and Grant Insights (an applied research project).

  3. The Multiple Institution Database for Investigating Engineering Longitudinal Development (MIDFIELD) has been developed over many years with substantial investment by the National Science Foundation through Engineering Education and Centers in the Engineering Directorate and the Division of Undergraduate Education in the Education and Human Resources Directorate. This project is focused on transitioning MIDFIELD to the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The current team of MIDFIELD researchers continues to support this project including helping others learn to use the database. We have developed detailed tutorials in R that introduce MIDFIELD, key metrics, and example scenarios. We have also designed and facilitated workshops. In year 2, we offered the MIDFIELD Institute, an online three-day workshop to help researchers learn about and use MIDFIELD effectively. Attendees included graduate students, early career faculty, senior faculty, and an NSF program officer. Results from the 2023 offering of the MIDFIELD Institute are described in this paper. Dissemination and products are also summarized.

  4. Synopsis Cross-disciplinary research enables us to tackle complex problems that require expertise from different fields. Such collaborations involve researchers who have different perspectives, communication styles, and knowledge bases, and can produce results far greater than the sum of their parts. However, in an era of increasing scientific specialization, there exist many barriers for students and early-career researchers (ECRs) interested in training and undertaking interdisciplinary research endeavors. This perspective examines the challenges that students and ECRs perceive and experience in cross-disciplinary work and proposes pathways to create more inclusive and welcoming research environments. This work emerges from a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded workshop held during the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) Annual Meeting in January 2023 in Austin, TX. The workshop brought together seasoned interdisciplinary scientists with undergraduate and graduate students to identify and discuss perceived challenges through small group discussions and experience sharing. Through summarizing a range of student concerns about embarking on careers as interdisciplinary scientists and identifying ways to dismantle institutional and lab management-level barriers, we aim to promote an inclusive and collaborative problem-solving environment for scientists of all experience levels.

  5. To build the nation's skilled technical workforce, the demand for entry and middle-skill professionals in technical fields in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is increasing. The alignment between educational programming and job requirements for STEM-oriented technicians is essential for establishing career pathways that produce high-quality middle skills professionals for technology-rich fields. Building on prior research on rural Florida’s information technologies career pathways, in this National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technician Education (ATE) targeted research project, FSU researchers are investigating alignment among educational opportunities, employer needs, student readiness and new employee experiences in Advanced Manufacturing (AM) and test the usefulness of tools and processes developed to assess such alignment, focusing on the opportunities and challenges in Florida’s rural areas. Researchers constructed and are iteratively refining an AM Body of Knowledge (BOK) for analysis and community engagement. The quantitative and qualitative mixed methods research design combines content analysis and text mining using the BOK with surveys, and interviews/focus groups. The research team is applying text mining approaches to identify the match between syllabi learning outcomes, industry certification requirements, state curriculum frameworks, and job postings. In interviews and focus groups, researchers are qualitatively assessing the employers’ competency expectations and new professionals’ job experiences. These analyses will build capacity among rural stakeholders to strengthen and expand their technical workforce.
