BLDC motors are widely employed in various applications because of their high efficiency, reliability, and long operational life. For BLDC motors, any electric malfunctions in the commutation signal creation with or without Hall sensors can lead to unexpected vibrations, crashes, and accidents according to application areas. Therefore, fast detection and diagnosis of these faults are crucial for the reliable operation of BLDC motor drive systems. In this paper, a unique approach has been explored for developing fault signatures to detect commutation signal faults accurately and rapidly in the BLDC motor drive system under highly dynamic loads. After the fault detection, a commutation signal is indirectly reconstructed based on healthy commutation signals to continuously drive the motor drive system to avoid serious electrical and mechanical issues due to the faults. The proposed approach and feasibility of the method have been verified both by simulation and experimental studies. The results of the proposed method will significantly improve the accuracy of the commutation signal fault detection and eventually enhance the reliability of the BLDC motor drive.

A Robust Online Diagnostic Strategy of Inverter Open-Circuit Faults for Robotic Joint BLDC Motors

As robots are increasingly used in remote, safety-critical, and hazardous applications, the reliability of robots is becoming more important than ever before. Robotic arm joint motor-drive systems are vulnerable to hardware failures due to harsh operating environment in many scenarios, which may yield various joint failures and result in significant downtime costs. Targeting the most common robotic joint brushless DC (BLDC) motor-drive systems, this paper proposes a robust online diagnostic method for semiconductor faults for BLDC motor drives. The proposed fault diagnostic technique is based on the stator current signature analysis. Specifically, this paper investigates the performance of the BLDC joint motors under open-circuit faults of the inverter switches using finite element co-simulation tools. Furthermore, the proposed methodology is not only capable of detecting any open-circuit faults but also identifying faulty switches based on a knowledge table by considering various fault conditions. The robustness of the proposed technique was verified through extensive simulations under different speed and load conditions. Moreover, simulations have been carried out on a Kinova Gen-3 robot arm to verify the theoretical findings, highlighting the impacts of locked joints on the robot’s end-effector locations. Finally, experimental results are presented to corroborate the performance of the proposed fault diagnostic strategy.

Inverter-based resources (IBRs) exhibit distinct short-circuit characteristics that challenge traditional protective relays designed for systems dominated by synchronous generators. While research often focuses on IBRs’ positive-sequence currents during faults, their zero- and negative-sequence responses under unsymmetrical faults remain underexplored. Factors such as transformer configurations and grounding methods further complicate the design of protection schemes relying on these sequence components. This paper enhances the understanding of IBR short-circuit behavior during both symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults and investigates the impact of various transformer configurations on these behaviors. We highlight the limitations of traditional protective relays in safeguarding IBRs due to their constrained fault current levels, minimal negative-sequence components, and, in many cases, the absence of zero-sequence currents. To address these challenges, a novel incremental focused directional protection scheme is introduced. This approach offers enhanced fault detection capabilities under the complex conditions posed by high renewable energy penetration and diverse transformer configurations. The proposed method provides a robust solution for ensuring reliable protection in modern power systems with high integration of IBRs, contributing to improved grid stability and resilience.more » « less

The growing number of applications in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) involving different types of robots while maintaining interoperability and trust is an ongoing challenge faced by traditional centralized systems. This paper presents what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first integration of the Robotic Operating System (ROS) with the Ethereum blockchain using physical robots. We implement a specialized smart contract framework called “Swarm Contracts” that rely on blockchain technology in real-world applications for robotic agents with human interaction to perform collaborative tasks while ensuring trust by motivating the agents with incentives using a token economy with a self-governing structure. The use of open-source technologies, including robot hardware platforms such as TurtleBot3, Universal Robot arm, and ROS, enables the ability to connect a wide range of robot types to the framework we propose. Going beyond simulations, we demonstrate the robustness of the proposed system in real-world conditions with actual hardware robots.more » « less

This paper presents a novel approach to fall prediction for bipedal robots, specifically targeting the detection of potential falls while standing caused by abrupt, incipient, and intermittent faults. Leveraging a 1D convolutional neural network (CNN), our method aims to maximize lead time for fall prediction while minimizing false positive rates. The proposed algorithm uniquely integrates the detection of various fault types and estimates the lead time for potential falls. Our contributions include the development of an algorithm capable of detecting abrupt, incipient, and intermittent faults in full-sized robots, its implementation using both simulation and hardware data for a humanoid robot, and a method for estimating lead time. Evaluation metrics, including false positive rate, lead time, and response time, demonstrate the efficacy of our approach. Particularly, our model achieves impressive lead times and response times across different fault scenarios with a false positive rate of 0. The findings of this study hold significant implications for enhancing the safety and reliability of bipedal robotic systems.more » « less

Early identification of rotating machinery faults is crucial to avoid catastrophic failures upon installation. Contact-based vibration acquisition approaches are traditionally used for the purpose of machine health monitoring and end-of-line quality control. In complex working conditions, it can be difficult to perform an accurate accelerometer based vibration test. Acoustic signals (sound pressure and particle velocity) also contain important information about the operating state of mechanical equipment and can be used to detect different faults. A deep learning approach, namely one-dimensional Convolution Neural Networks (1D-CNN) can directly process raw time signals thereby eliminating the human dependance on fault feature extraction. An experimental research study is conducted to test the proposed 1D-CNN methodology on three different electric motor faults. The results from the study indicate that the fault detection performance from the new acoustic-based method is very effective and thus can be a good replacement to the conventional accelerometer-based methods for detection and diagnosis of mechanical faults in electric motors.more » « less
