Abstract We report on the structure and dielectric properties of ternary A6B2O17(A = Zr; B = Nb, Ta) thin films and ceramics. Thin films are produced via sputter deposition from dense, phase‐homogenous bulk ceramic targets, which are synthesized through a reactive sintering process at 1500°C. Crystal structure, microstructure, chemistry, and dielectric properties are characterized by X‐ray diffraction and reflectivity, atomic force microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and capacitance analysis, respectively. We observe relative permittivities approaching 60 and loss tangents <1 × 10−2across the 103–105 Hz frequency range in the Zr6Nb2O17and Zr6Ta2O17phases. These observations create an opportunity space for this novel class of disordered oxide electroceramics.more » « less

Herein, the effect of structure on pseudocapacitive properties in alkaline conditions is demonstrated through the investigation of isoelectronic oxides Ca2LaMn2O7and Sr2LaMn2O7, where the difference in ionic radii of Ca2+and Sr2+leads to a change in structure and lattice symmetry, resulting in an orthorhombicCmcmstructure for the former and a tetragonalI4/mmmstructure for the latter. While calcium and strontium do not make a direct contribution to the near‐surface faradaic processes that are essential to the pseudocapacitive properties, their effect on the structure leads to a change in the oxygen intercalation process and the associated pseudocapacitive energy storage. It is shown that Sr2LaMn2O7has a significantly greater specific capacitance than Ca2LaMn2O7. In addition, the former shows a considerably higher‐energy density compared to the latter. Furthermore, these materials show highly stable energy‐storage properties, and retain their specific capacitance over 10 000 cycles of charge–discharge in a symmetric pseudocapacitive cell. Importantly, these findings show the structure–property relationships, where a change in the structure and lattice symmetry can result in a significant change in pseudocapacitive charge–discharge properties in isoelectronic systems.more » « less

Abstract Li2MnO3has been contemplated as a high‐capacity cathode candidate for Li‐ion batteries; however, it evolves oxygen during battery charging under ambient conditions, which hinders a reversible reaction. However, it is unclear if this irreversible process still holds under subambient conditions. Here, the low‐temperature electrochemical properties of Li2MnO3in an aqueous LiCl electrolyte are evaluated and a reversible discharge capacity of 302 mAh g−1at a potential of 1.0 V versus Ag/AgCl at −78 °C with good rate capability and stable cycling performance, in sharp contrast to the findings in a typical Li2MnO3cell cycled at room temperature, is observed. However, the results reveal that the capacity does not originate from the reversible oxygen oxidation in Li2MnO3but the reversible Cl2(l)/Cl−(aq.) redox from the electrolyte. The results demonstrate the good catalytic properties of Li2MnO3to promote the Cl2/Cl−redox at low temperatures.more » « less
