Title: Multiplicity and transverse momentum dependence of charge-balance functions in pPb and PbPb collisions at LHC energies
Abstract Measurements of the charge-dependent two-particle angular correlation function in proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 8.16 TeV and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV are reported. The pPb and PbPb data sets correspond to integrated luminosities of 186 nb−1and 0.607 nb−1, respectively, and were collected using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The charge-dependent correlations are characterized by balance functions of same- and opposite-sign particle pairs. The balance functions, which contain information about the creation time of charged particle pairs and the development of collectivity, are studied as functions of relative pseudorapidity (∆η) and relative azimuthal angle (∆ϕ), for various multiplicity and transverse momentum (pT) intervals. A multiplicity dependence of the balance function is observed in ∆ηand ∆ϕfor both systems. The width of the balance functions decreases towards high-multiplicity collisions in the momentum region<2 GeV, for pPb and PbPb results. Integrals of the balance functions are presented in both systems, and a mild dependence of the charge-balancing fractions on multiplicity is observed. No multiplicity dependence is observed at higher transverse momentum. The data are compared withhydjet, hijing, andamptgenerator predictions, none of which capture completely the multiplicity dependence seen in the data. The comparison of results with different center-of-mass energies suggests that the balance functions become narrower at higher energies, which is consistent with the idea of delayed hadronization and the effect of radial flow.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The collective behavior of$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 and$$ \Lambda /\overline{\Lambda} $$ Λ/Λ¯ strange hadrons is studied by measuring the elliptic azimuthal anisotropy (v2) using the scalar-product and multiparticle correlation methods. Proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 8.16 TeV and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC are investigated. Nonflow effects in the pPb collisions are studied by using a subevent cumulant analysis and by excluding events where a jet with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV is present. The strange hadronv2values extracted in pPb collisions via the four- and six-particle correlation method are found to be nearly identical, suggesting the collective behavior. Comparisons of the pPb and PbPb results for both strange hadrons and charged particles illustrate how event-by-event flow fluctuations depend on the system size.

  2. Abstract The production cross sections of D0, D+, and$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ hadrons originating from beauty-hadron decays (i.e. non-prompt) were measured for the first time at midrapidity in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV. Nuclear modification factors (RpPb) of non-prompt D0, D+, and$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ are calculated as a function of the transverse momentum (pT) to investigate the modification of the momentum spectra measured in p–Pb collisions with respect to those measured in proton–proton (pp) collisions at the same energy. TheRpPbmeasurements are compatible with unity and with the measurements in the prompt charm sector, and do not show a significantpTdependence. ThepT-integrated cross sections andpT-integratedRpPbof non-prompt D0and D+mesons are also computed by extrapolating the visible cross sections down topT= 0. The non-prompt D-mesonRpPbintegrated overpTis compatible with unity and with model calculations implementing modification of the parton distribution functions of nucleons bound in nuclei with respect to free nucleons. The non-prompt$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ /D0and D+/D0production ratios are computed to investigate hadronisation mechanisms of beauty quarks into mesons and baryons. The measured ratios as a function ofpTdisplay a similar trend to that measured for charm hadrons in the same collision system.

  3. Abstract Measurements of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV and the corresponding nuclear modification factor$$ {R}_{\textrm{pPb}}^{\textrm{ch}\ \textrm{jet}} $$ RpPb chjet are presented, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed in the central rapidity region |ηjet|<0.5 from charged particles using the anti-kTalgorithm with resolution parametersR= 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. ThepT-differential inclusive production cross section of charged-particle jets, as well as the corresponding cross section ratios, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the transverse momentum range 10<$$ {p}_{\textrm{T},\textrm{jet}}^{\textrm{ch}} $$ pT,jetch <140 GeV/cand 10<$$ {p}_{\textrm{T},\textrm{jet}}^{\textrm{ch}} $$ pT,jetch <160 GeV/c, respectively, together with the nuclear modification factor$$ {R}_{\textrm{pPb}}^{\textrm{ch}\ \textrm{jet}} $$ RpPb chjet in the range 10<$$ {p}_{\textrm{T},\textrm{jet}}^{\textrm{ch}} $$ pT,jetch <140 GeV/c. The analysis extends thepTrange of the previously-reported charged-particle jet measurements by the ALICE Collaboration. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with one and independent of the jet resolution parameter with the improved precision of this study, indicating that the possible influence of cold nuclear matter effects on the production cross section of charged-particle jets in p-Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV is smaller than the current precision. The obtained results are in agreement with other minimum bias jet measurements available for RHIC and LHC energies, and are well reproduced by the NLO perturbative QCD Powhegcalculations with parton shower provided by Pythia8 as well as by Jetscapesimulations.

  4. Abstract The ratio of prompt production cross-sections ofψ(2S) andJ/ψmesons in their dimuon final state is measured as a function of centrality, using data collected by the LHCb detector in PbPb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV, for the first time in the forward rapidity region. The measured ratio shows no dependence on the collision centrality, and is compared to the latest theory predictions and to the recent measurements in literature.

  5. Abstract The first measurement ofϕ(1020) meson production in fixed-targetpNe collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{NN}} $$ sNN = 68.5 GeV is presented. Theϕ(1020) mesons are reconstructed in theirK+K−decay in a data sample consisting of proton collisions on neon nuclei at rest, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 21.7±1.4 nb−1, collected by the LHCb detector at CERN. Theϕ(1020) production cross-section in the centre-of-mass rapidity range of−1.8< y*<0 and transverse momentum range of 800< pT<6500 MeV/cis found to beσ= 182.7 ± 2.7 (stat.) ± 14.1 (syst)μb/nucleon. A double-differential measurement of the cross-section is also provided in four regions of rapidity and six regions of transverse momentum of theϕ(1020) meson and compared with the predictions from Pythia and EPOS4, which are found to underestimate the experimental values.
