Title: Observation of Enhanced Long-Range Elliptic Anisotropies Inside High-Multiplicity Jets in pp Collisions at s=13  TeV
A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s=13TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb1 . Jets are reconstructed with the anti- kT algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity |ηjet|<1.6 . Two-particle correlations among the charged particles within the jets are studied as functions of the particles’ azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations ( Δϕ* and Δη* ) in a jet coordinate basis, where particles’ η* , ϕ* are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet charged-particle multiplicity up to Nchj100 . Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for |Δη*| >2 . For low- Nchj jets, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, v2* , is observed to decrease with Nchj . This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for v2* emerges at Nchj80 , hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of jet evolution in the vacuum. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN  more » « less

  1. The first observation of the decay Ξb ψ(2S) Ξ and measurement of the branching ratio of Ξb ψ(2S) Ξ to ΞbJ/ψΞ are presented. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay modes. The results are based on proton-proton colliding beam data from the LHC collected by the CMS experiment at s=13TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140fb1 . The branching fraction ratio is measured to be B( Ξb ψ(2S) Ξ )/B( Ξb J/ψΞ )=0.8 40.19+0.21 (stat)±0.10(syst)±0.02(B) , where the last uncertainty comes from the uncertainties in the branching fractions of the charmonium states. New measurements of the Ξb(5945)0 baryon mass and natural width are also presented, using the Ξbπ+ final state, where the Ξb baryon is reconstructed through the decays J/ψΞ , ψ(2S) Ξ , J/ψΛK , and J/ψΣ0K . Finally, the fraction of Ξb baryons produced from Ξb(5945)0 decays is determined. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  2. Recent measurements of charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions have questioned the universality of charm-quark fragmentation across different collision systems. In this work the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is probed, by presenting the first measurement of the longitudinal jet momentum fraction carried by Λc+ baryons, zch , in hadronic collisions. The results are obtained in proton-proton ( pp ) collisions at s=13TeV at the LHC, with Λc+ baryons and charged (track-based) jets reconstructed in the transverse momentum intervals of 3 pT Λc+ <15GeV/c and 7 pTjet ch <15GeV/c , respectively. The zch distribution is compared to a measurement of D0 -tagged charged jets in pp collisions as well as to 8 simulations. The data hints that the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is softer with respect to charm mesons, in the measured kinematic interval, as predicted by hadronization models which include color correlations beyond leading-color in the string formation. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  3. A study of Λb0 and Ξb0 decays to Λh+h ( h()=π,K ) is performed using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1–2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb1 . The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the Λb0 Λc+ (Λπ+)π decay as a control channel. The decays Λb0Λπ+π and Ξb0ΛKπ+ are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, CP asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for CP violation in the Λb0ΛK+K decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric Λb0N*+K decay amplitude. The measured CP asymmetries for other decays are compatible with zero. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN

  4. A study is presented of B+KS0Kπ+K+ and B+KS0K+πK+ decays based on the analysis of proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb1 . The KS0Kπ invariant-mass distributions of both B+ decay modes show, in the m( KS0Kπ )<1.85GeV mass region, large activity which is resolved using an amplitude analysis. A simple model, where JPC amplitudes are described by multiple Breit-Wigner functions with appropriate angular distributions, provides a good description of the experimental data. In this approach a complex mixture of JPC=0+ , 1++ and 1+ amplitudes is observed that is dominated by η(1405) , η(1470) , η(1760) , f1(1285) , f1(1420) and h1(1405) resonances. The KS0Kπ Dalitz plots are dominated by asymmetric crossing K*K¯ bands which are different for the two B+ decay modes. This is due to a different interference pattern between the 1++ and 1+ amplitudes in the two channels. Branching fractions are measured for each resonant contribution. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN

  5. The first observation of the concurrent production of two J/ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( pPb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6nb1 . The two J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ+μ decay channels with transverse momenta pT>6.5GeV and rapidity |y|<2.4 . Events where one of the J/ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The pPb J/ψJ/ψ+X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ(pPbJ/ψJ/ψ+X)=22.0±8.9(stat)±1.5(syst)nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J/ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σSPS pPbJ/ψJ/ψ+X =16.5±10.8(stat)±0.1(syst)nb and σDPS pPbJ/ψJ/ψ+X =5.4±6.2(stat)±0.4(syst)nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σeff>1.0mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN
