BackgroundIncreasingly, college science courses are transitioning from a traditional lecture format to active learning because students learn more and fail less frequently when they engage in their learning through activities and discussions in class. Fear of negative evaluation (FNE), defined as a student’s sense of dread associated with being unfavorably evaluated while participating in a social situation, discourages undergraduates from participating in small group discussions, whole class discussions, and conversing one-on-one with instructors. ObjectiveThis study aims to evaluate the acceptability of a novel digital single-session intervention and to assess the feasibility of implementing it in a large enrollment college science course taught in an active learning way. MethodsTo equip undergraduates with skills to cope with FNE and bolster their confidence, clinical psychologists and biology education researchers developed Project Engage, a digital, self-guided single-session intervention for college students. It teaches students strategies for coping with FNE to bolster their confidence. Project Engage provides biologically informed psychoeducation, uses interactive elements for engagement, and helps generate a personalized action plan. We conducted a 2-armed randomized controlled trial to evaluate the acceptability and the preliminary effectiveness of Project Engage compared with an active control condition that provides information on available resources on the college campus. ResultsIn a study of 282 upper-level physiology students, participants randomized to complete Project Engage reported a greater increase in overall confidence in engaging in small group discussions (P=.01) and whole class discussions (P<.001), but not in one-on-one interactions with instructors (P=.05), from baseline to immediately after intervention outcomes, compared with participants in an active control condition. Project Engage received a good acceptability rating (1.22 on a scale of –2 to +2) and had a high completion rate (>97%). ConclusionsThis study provides a foundation for a freely available, easily accessible intervention to bolster student confidence for contributing in class. Behavioral Intervention for Adults With Autism on Distribution of Attention in Triadic Conversations: A/B-Tested Pre-Post Study
BackgroundCross-neurotype differences in social communication patterns contribute to high unemployment rates among adults with autism. Adults with autism can be unsuccessful in job searches or terminated from employment due to mismatches between their social attention behaviors and society’s expectations on workplace communication. ObjectiveWe propose a behavioral intervention concerning distribution of attention in triadic (three-way) conversations. Specifically, the objective is to determine whether providing personalized feedback to each individual with autism based on an analysis of their attention distribution behavior during an initial conversation session would cause them to modify their orientation behavior in a subsequent conversation session. MethodsOur system uses an unobtrusive head orientation estimation model to track the focus of attention of each individual. Head orientation sequences from a conversation session are analyzed based on five statistical domains (eg, maximum exclusion duration and average contact duration) representing different types of attention distribution behavior. An intervention is provided to a participant if they exceeded the nonautistic average for that behavior by at least 2 SDs. The intervention uses data analysis and video modeling along with a constructive discussion about the targeted behaviors. Twenty-four individuals with autism with no intellectual disabilities participated in the study. The participants were divided into test and control groups of 12 participants each. ResultsBased on their attention distribution behavior in the initial conversation session, 11 of the 12 participants in the test group received an intervention in at least one domain. Of the 11 participants who received the intervention, 10 showed improvement in at least one domain on which they received feedback. Independent t tests for larger test groups (df>15) confirmed that the group improvements are statistically significant compared with the corresponding controls (P<.05). Crawford-Howell t tests confirmed that 78% of the interventions resulted in significant improvements when compared individually against corresponding controls (P<.05). Additional t tests comparing the first conversation sessions of the test and control groups and comparing the first and second conversation sessions of the control group resulted in nonsignificant differences, pointing to the intervention being the main effect behind the behavioral changes displayed by the test group, as opposed to confounding effects or group differences. ConclusionsOur proposed behavioral intervention offers a useful framework for practicing social attention behavior in multiparty conversations that are common in social and professional settings.

Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) typically work towards acquiring skills to participate in a regular classroom setting such as attending and appropriately responding to an instructor’s requests. Social robots have the potential to support children with ASD in learning group-interaction skills. However, the majority of studies that target children with ASD’s interactions with social robots have been limited to one-on-one interactions. Group interaction sessions present unique challenges such as the unpredictable behaviors of the other children participating in the group intervention session and shared attention from the instructor. We present the design of a robot-mediated group interaction intervention for children with ASD to enable them to practice the skills required to participate in a classroom. We also present a study investigating differences in children's learning behaviors during robot-led and human-led group interventions over multiple intervention sessions. Results of this study suggests that children with ASD's learning behaviors are similar during human and robot instruction. Furthermore, preliminary results of this study suggest that a novelty effect was not observed when children interacted with the robot over multiple sessions.more » « less

BackgroundTobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable mortality in the United States; yet, evidence-based cessation services remain underused due to staffing constraints, limited access to counseling, and competing clinical priorities. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) chatbots may address these barriers by delivering personalized, guideline-aligned counseling through naturalistic dialogue. However, little is known about how GenAI chatbots support smoking cessation at both outcome and communication process levels. ObjectiveThis feasibility study evaluated the implementation of an evidence-based smoking cessation counseling session delivered by a GenAI-powered chatbot, Aipaca. We examined (1) pre-post changes in cessation preparedness, (2) communication dynamics during counseling sessions, and (3) user perceptions of the chatbot’s value, limitations, and design needs. MethodsWe conducted an observational, single-arm, mixed methods study with 29 adult smokers. Participants completed pre-post surveys measuring knowledge of smoking-related health risks and cessation methods, self-efficacy, and readiness to quit. Each engaged in a 30-minute text-based counseling session with Aipaca, powered by GPT-4 and structured using the 5A’s framework (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange). Sessions were transcribed for microsequential conversation analysis. Twenty-five participants completed semistructured interviews exploring perceived value, challenges, and design suggestions. Quantitative data were analyzed with paired-samples t tests, qualitative data were thematically analyzed, and transcripts were analyzed for interactional practices. The methodological strength of this study lies in its triangulated approach, which combines quantitative measurement of intervention effectiveness, qualitative analysis of user interviews, and conversational analysis of counseling transcripts to generate a comprehensive understanding of both outcomes and underlying mechanisms. ResultsParticipants demonstrated significant improvements in all preparedness indicators: knowledge of health risks, knowledge of cessation methods, self-efficacy, and readiness to quit. Conversation analysis identified three recurrent patterns enabling counseling-relevant dynamics: (1) contextual referencing and continuity, (2) formulations with elaboration prompts, and (3) narrative progression toward collaborative planning. Interview themes underscored Aipaca’s perceived value as an accessible, nonjudgmental, and motivating resource, capable of delivering personalized and interactive support. Criticisms included limited accountability, reduced cultural resonance, and overly goal-directed style. Participants emphasized design needs such as proactive engagement, gamified progress tracking, empathetic or anthropomorphic personas, and safeguards for accuracy. ConclusionsThis mixed methods feasibility study demonstrates that GenAI can deliver evidence-based smoking cessation counseling with measurable short-term gains in cessation preparedness and process-level communication patterns consistent with motivational interviewing. Users valued Aipaca’s accessibility, empathy, and personalization, while also articulating expectations for richer social roles and long-term accountability. Findings highlight both the promise and challenges of integrating GenAI into digital health: pairing adaptive language generation with human-centered design, embedding accuracy safeguards, and ensuring integration into multilevel cessation infrastructures will be essential for future clinical deployment.more » « less

We conducted a 2x2 Wizard of Oz between-subject user study with sixteen healthy older adults. We investigated how to make social robots converse more naturally and reciprocally through unstructured conversation. We varied the level of interaction by changing the level of verbal and nonverbal communication the robot provided. Participants interacted with the robot for eight sessions engaging in an unstructured conversation. These conversations lasted thirty minutes to an hour. This paper will evaluate four questions from the post-interaction survey individuals completed after each session with the robot. The questions include: (i) I had fun talking to the robot; (ii) I felt I had a meaningful conversation; (iii) I was engaged the whole interaction; and (iv) I would consider the robot my friend. All participants reported they were engaged, had a meaningful conversation, and had fun during all eight sessions. Seven individuals felt the robot was their friend.more » « less

Spatial reasoning skills have been linked to success in STEM and are considered an important part of geoscience problem solving. Most agree that these are a group of skills rather than a single ability, though there is no agreement on the full list of constituent skills. Few studies have attempted to isolate specific spatial skills for deliberate training. We conducted an experiment to isolate and train the skill of recognizing horizontal (a crucial component in measuring the orientation of planes) using a dedicated Virtual Reality (VR) module. We recruited 21 undergraduate students from natural science and social science majors for the study, which consisted of a pretest, 15-minute training, and posttest. The pre- and posttests consisted of a short multiple choice vocabulary quiz, 5 hand-drawn and 5 multiple choice Water Level Task (WLT) questions, and the Vandenberg and Kuse Mental Rotation Task (MRT). Participants were sorted based on pre-test Water Level Task scores, only those with scores <80% were placed in an intervention group and randomly assigned to training, either in VR (experimental) or on paper (standard), of about 15 minutes. The high-scoring participants received no training (comparison). All three groups of participants completed a posttest after the training (if any). After removing three participants who did not return for the posttest session, we had 18 participants in total: 6 in VR, 7 in the comparison group, and 5 in the standard group. Repeated measures ANOVA of the pre to post hand-drawn WLT scores shows at least one group is different (p=.002) and Tukey’s Post-Hoc analysis indicates that the VR group improved significantly more that the high-scoring comparison group (Mean Difference = -1.857, p = .001) and the standard group (Mean Difference = -1.200, p = .049). While any significant result is encouraging, a major limitation of this study is the small sample size and unequal variances on both the pretest (Levene’s HOV test, F = 7.50, p = .006) and posttest (F = 13.53, p < .001), despite random assignment. More trials are needed to demonstrate reproducibility. While more tests are needed, this preliminary study shows the potential benefit of VR in training spatial reasoning skills.more » « less
