Title: Double Schubert polynomials do have saturated Newton polytopes
Abstract We prove that double Schubert polynomials have the saturated Newton polytope property. This settles a conjecture by Monical, Tokcan and Yong. Our ideas are motivated by the theory of multidegrees. We introduce a notion of standardization of ideals that enables us to study nonstandard multigradings. This allows us to show that the support of the multidegree polynomial of each Cohen–Macaulay prime ideal in a nonstandard multigrading, and in particular, that of each Schubert determinantal ideal is a discrete polymatroid.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We study a class of combinatorially defined polynomial ideals that are generated by minors of a generic symmetric matrix. Included within this class are the symmetric determinantal ideals, the symmetric ladder determinantal ideals, and the symmetric Schubert determinantal ideals of A. Fink, J. Rajchgot, and S. Sullivant. Each ideal in our class is a type C analog of a Kazhdan–Lusztig ideal of A. Woo and A. Yong; that is, it is the scheme‐theoretic defining ideal of the intersection of a type C Schubert variety with a type C opposite Schubert cell, appropriately coordinatized. The Kazhdan–Lusztig ideals that arise are exactly those where the opposite cell is 123‐avoiding. Our main results include Gröbner bases for these ideals, prime decompositions of their initial ideals (which are Stanley–Reisner ideals of subword complexes), and combinatorial formulas for their multigraded Hilbert series in terms of pipe dreams.

  2. We give an explicit formula for the degree of the Grothendieck polynomial of a Grassmannian permutation and a closely related formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Schubert determinantal ideal of a Grassmannian permutation. We then provide a counterexample to a conjecture of Kummini-Lakshmibai-Sastry-Seshadri on a formula for regularities of standard open patches of particular Grassmannian Schubert varieties and show that our work gives rise to an alternate explicit formula in these cases. We end with a new conjecture on the regularities of standard open patches ofarbitraryGrassmannian Schubert varieties.

  3. Abstract In this paper, we propose a construction of GLSM defects corresponding to Schubert cycles in Lagrangian Grassmannians, following recent work of Closset-Khlaif on Schubert cycles in ordinary Grassmannians. In the case of Lagrangian Grassmannians, there are superpotential terms in both the bulk GLSM as well as on the defect itself, enforcing isotropy constraints. We check our construction by comparing the locus on which the GLSM defect is supported to mathematical descriptions, checking dimensions, and perhaps most importantly, comparing defect indices to known and expected polynomial invariants of the Schubert cycles in quantum cohomology and quantum K theory.

  4. Abstract A foundational principle in the study of modules over standard graded polynomial rings is that geometric positivity conditions imply vanishing of Betti numbers. The main goal of this paper is to determine the extent to which this principle extends to the nonstandard ‐graded case. In this setting, the classical arguments break down, and the results become much more nuanced. We introduce a new notion of Castelnuovo–Mumford regularity and employ exterior algebra techniques to control the shapes of nonstandard ‐graded minimal free resolutions. Our main result reveals a unique feature in the nonstandard ‐graded case: the possible degrees of the syzygies of a graded module in this setting are controlled not only by its regularity, but also by its depth. As an application of our main result, we show that given a simplicial projective toric variety and a module over its coordinate ring, the multigraded Betti numbers of are contained in a particular polytope when satisfies an appropriate positivity condition.

  5. Abstract We give a simple and uniform proof of a conjecture of Haines–Richarz characterizing the smooth locus of Schubert varieties in twisted affine Grassmannians. Our method is elementary and avoids any representation theoretic techniques, instead relying on a combinatorial analysis of tangent spaces of Schubert varieties.
