Title: Engineering Versus Science: How Do Students Engage in Engineering Activities?
Georgia's K-8 science education follows a well-defined 3D learning framework, unlike the less standardized engineering methodology. This presentation introduces a modified 7-step engineering methodology integrating 3D learning to enhance problem-solving and prototype testing. It includes examples of preservice teachers' lesson plans and student engagement from a summer program, inviting questions on theory, methodology, and implementation.  more » « less

  1. This work in progress reports an intervention to develop leadership skills in engineering undergraduate students. A methodology based on a cognitive apprentice framework was implemented, where coaching, Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL), cooperative learning, reflection, and self-assessment are combined to train peer leaders from different engineering programs. Students in the PLTL Peer Leaders initiative are low-income academically talented students (LIATS) from a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Early results analyzing post workshop reflections and self-assessment of peer leaders were used to identify changes in leadership skills of peer leaders. This paper reports on the methodology employed and early results from students’ reflection and self-assessment.

  2. Biomaterials and biomedical implants have revolutionized the way medicine is practiced. Technologies, such as 3D printing and electrospinning, are currently employed to create novel biomaterials. Most of the synthesis techniques are ad-hoc, time taking, and expensive. These shortcomings can be overcome greatly with the employment of computational techniques. In this paper we consider the problem of bone tissue engineering as an example and show the potentials of machine learning approaches in biomaterial construction, in which different models was built to predict the elastic modulus of the scaffold at given an arbitrary material composition. Likewise, the methodology was extended to cell-material interaction and prediction at an arbitrary process parameter.

    ABSTRACT Innovative technology helps students foster creative thinking and problem‐solving abilities by augmenting human sensing and enriching input and output information. New technology can incorporate haptic sensing features—a sensing modality for user operations. Learning with haptic sensing features promises new ways to master cognitive and motor skills and higher‐order cognitive reasoning tasks (e.g., decision‐making and problem‐solving). This study conceptualizes haptic technology within the human‐technology interaction (HTI) framework. It aims to investigate the components of haptic systems to define their impact on learning and facilitate understanding of haptic technology, including application development to ease entry barriers for educators. The research builds a haptic HTI framework based on a systematic literature review on haptic applications in engineering learning over the last two decades. The review utilizes the SALSA methodology to analyze relevant studies comprehensively. The framework outcome is a haptic HTI taxonomy to build visual representations of the explicit connection between the taxonomy components and practical educational applications (by means of heatmaps). The approach led to a robust conceptualization of HTI into a taxonomy—a structured framework encompassing categories for interaction modalities, immersive technologies, and learning methodologies in engineering education. The model assists in understanding how haptic feedback can be utilized in learning with technology experiences. Applying haptic technology in engineering education includes mastering fundamental science concepts and creating customized haptic prototypes for engineering processes. A growing trend focuses on wearable haptics, such as gloves and vests, which involve kinesthetic movement, fine motor skills, and spatial awareness—all fostering spatial and temporal cognitive abilities (the ability to effectively manage and comprehend significant amounts ofspatial(how design components or resources are related to one another in the 3D space) andtemporal(the logic in a process, such as the order, sequences, and hierarchies of the resources information). The haptic human‐technology interaction (H‐HTI) framework guides future research in developing cognitive reasoning through H‐HTI, unlocking new frontiers in engineering education.

While our world consistently presents complicated, interdisciplinary problems with STEM foundations, most pre-university curricula do not encourage drawing on multidisciplinary knowledge in the sciences and engineering to create solutions. We developed an instructional approach, Iterative Science and Engineering (ISE), that cycles through scientific investigation and engineering design and culminates in constructing a solution to a local environmental challenge. Next, we created, revised, and evaluated a six-week ISE curricular program, Invasive Insects, culminating in 6th–9th-grade students building traps to mitigate local invasive insect populations. Over three Design-Based Research (DBR) cycles, we gathered and analyzed identical pre and post-test data from 554 adolescents to address the research question: what three-dimensional (3D) science and engineering knowledge do adolescents demonstrate over three DBR cycles associated with a curricular program following the Iterative Science and Engineering instructional approach? Results document students’ significant statistical improvements, with differential outcomes in different cycles. For example, most students demonstrated significant learning of 3D science and engineering argument construction in all cycles—still, students only significantly improved engineering design when they performed guided reflection on their designs and physically built a second trap. Our results suggest that the development, refinement, and empirical evaluation of an ISE curricular program led to students’ design, building, evaluation, and sharing of their learning of mitigating local invasive insect populations. To address complex, interdisciplinary challenges, we must provide opportunities for fluid and iterative STEM learning through scientific investigation and engineering design cycles.

  5. Abstract Metal halide perovskites show promise for next-generation light-emitting diodes, particularly in the near-infrared range, where they outperform organic and quantum-dot counterparts. However, they still fall short of costly III-V semiconductor devices, which achieve external quantum efficiencies above 30% with high brightness. Among several factors, controlling grain growth and nanoscale morphology is crucial for further enhancing device performance. This study presents a grain engineering methodology that combines solvent engineering and heterostructure construction to improve light outcoupling efficiency and defect passivation. Solvent engineering enables precise control over grain size and distribution, increasing light outcoupling to ~40%. Constructing 2D/3D heterostructures with a conjugated cation reduces defect densities and accelerates radiative recombination. The resulting near-infrared perovskite light-emitting diodes achieve a peak external quantum efficiency of 31.4% and demonstrate a maximum brightness of 929 W sr−1m−2. These findings indicate that perovskite light-emitting diodes have potential as cost-effective, high-performance near-infrared light sources for practical applications.
