This work-in-progress research paper describes the prevalence of neurodivergent students (ND) in engineering across two institutions. There is growing awareness that engineering students who are neurodivergent bring unique assets and face challenges to their higher education experience. Neurodivergent students may also face additional challenges associated with chronic illness or being marginalized due to their gender or race/ethnicity. This paper provides background on these issues, followed by demographic data from two institutions. The goal of the paper is to raise the awareness of engineering faculty that the variety of differences and medical conditions among engineering students may be more diverse and/or prevalent than many realize. Students may not disclose these conditions or receive formal accommodations but can be successful. With a notable percentage of engineering students identifying as ND, faculty should ensure these students feel supported. Higher education institutions should also prioritize systematic planning and programming to support the retention and success of these neurodivergent students.

Navigating Barriers to Success for Community College Science Students: A Review of Transfer Challenges
This paper examines the challenges community college students encounter when transferring to four-year higher-education institutions, focusing on the gap between their transfer aspirations and actual success. Despite the availability of substantial financial aid in higher education, transfer students continue to face numerous challenges that impede their integration and success at new institutions. These obstacles arise from a combination of institutional factors and individual student characteristics. Utilizing Pascarella’s model, this study underscores the importance of support programs in raising institutional awareness of the diverse challenges transfer students face and the necessity for tailored strategies to facilitate their successful transition and retention.

This research paper presents a comprehensive analysis of existing literature in the domain of Engineering education, with a distinct focus on Engineering Technology (ET) education. The overarching objective is to review the literature around the experiences, identity development and outcomes of students transitioning from community colleges to 4-year institutions for an ET degree (upper two-year program) and provide guidelines for the engineering education research community towards future studies about this important body of student population. Relying on insights derived from a wide array of empirical studies, this review underscores the pivotal role of institutional support in bolstering these students’ academic trajectory. The increasing trend of students moving between institutions in pursuit of engineering education, has led to a profound need for understanding the multi-dimensional challenges they grapple with. In the realm of ET, these challenges magnify, with transfer students navigating both academic intricacies like curriculum misalignment and socio-cultural dynamics such as integration into new academic communities. Furthermore, the journey of identity development, quintessential for their retention and success in the new environment, is portrayed as an intricate process, influenced by diverse elements from their previous experiences to the new institutional ethos. First, ET transfer students are entangled in a web of academic and non-academic hurdles. These range from technicalities like curriculum harmonization to softer aspects related to socio-cultural integration and identity reformation. The studies discussed within this review provide robust evidence addressing these multifaceted challenges. Second, the significance of identity development, pivotal for their integration, performance, and overall well-being, emerges as a complex interplay of myriad factors, both internal and external. Despite the rich insights from the extant literature, the authors have identified the following areas that require further exploration to benefit the literature in this field: • Emphasis on empirical studies that delve into ET transfer students' psychological and emotional well-being. While the literature emphasizes the nuanced journey of identity development, there is potential merit in understanding how these transitions and challenges influence mental health outcomes, ensuring comprehensive institutional support. • An imperative for empirical pursuits targeting the identity evolution stages of ET transfer students, aiming to decode the driving forces and impediments in this sphere. • A probe into the effectiveness of recently adopted institutional mandates or initiatives designed to elevate the transfer odyssey, spotlighting potential lasting ramifications. In steering the larger academic community, this review advocates for a deeper immersion into the aforementioned realms, with the aspiration that the resultant knowledge amplifies the scholastic trajectories of ET transfer students and enriches their comprehensive evolution within the engineering spectrum.more » « less

Vemu, Sheela (Ed.)Community colleges expand access to higher education and play a key role in efforts to increase and diversify the future science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce. While community colleges increase access to higher education and millions of students attend them for some portion of their education, the experiences of transfer students remain relatively understudied. Transferring during an academic journey can compound the barriers that students already face when pursuing a STEM degree. This study uses Schlossberg’s model for analyzing human adaptation to transition to understand how STEM community college transfer students navigate and adapt to the 4-year university. Five semistructured focus groups were conducted with STEM community college transfer students attending an urban university. Analysis of the focus groups resulted in a new model: the amended model of adaptation to transfer transition, or AMATT, which illustrates various factors that played a role in STEM community college transfer students’ adaptation a university. Analyses illumined two broad pathways that students tend to diverge into during their transitions—thriving or simply surviving. This work provides a framework for understanding factors influencing the transfer process and ideally will inform institutions and students as they consider maximal transfer student success.more » « less

COVID-19 has been one of the most significant disruptors of higher education in modern history. Higher education institutions rapidly transitioned to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) in mid-to-late March of 2020. The extent of COVID-19’s impact on teaching and learning, and the resulting challenges facilitating ERT during this time, likely varied by faculty, institutional, and geographical characteristics. In this study, we identified challenges in teaching and learning during the initial transition to ERT at Predominantly Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs) in the Midwest, United States. We conducted in-depth interviews with 14 faculty teaching at Midwestern PUIs to explore their lived experiences. We describe the most overarching challenges related to faculty teaching through four emergent themes: pedagogical changes, work-life balance, face-to-face interactions, and physical and mental health. Five themes emerged that we used to describe the most overarching challenges related to students and their learning: learning patterns, technology access, additional responsibilities, learning community, and mental health. Based upon the identified challenges, we provide broad recommendations that can be used to foster a more successful transition to ERT in unforeseen regional or global crises in the future.more » « less

Students are taking increasingly complex pathways through higher education, yet mobility patterns other than one-to-one vertical transfer have been largely neglected in the research literature (Taylor & Jain, 2017). This paper draws on semi-structured interviews with 27 students majoring in STEM fields from three universities to explore why they undertake non-traditional transfer patterns during their undergraduate studies. Students exhibited various dynamic transfer patterns such as summer swirling at community colleges, co-enrollment at multiple institutions, or lateral transfer between two-year or four-year institutions. Rationales for dynamic transfer varied by type of enrollment pattern.. Students often received benefits from their enrollment mobility (e.g., stay on track toward degree, maximize chances for success, affordability, etc.) but dynamic transfer was also prompted by unmet needs at their home institution. Students who attended more than two institutions or who exhibited discontinuous enrollment patterns experienced the most academic, personal, and financial duress. Students’ creative and dynamic transfer patterns in their higher education studies highlight the pivotal role that community colleges play in the degree persistence of university STEM majors. Additionally, students’ dynamic transfer patterns illustrate the resourceful ways that they navigate higher education and suggests the need for institutions to reexamine how they support students.more » « less
