We document aggregations of an undescribed benthic solitary tunicate of the family Pyuridae from the Arabian Sea. This new genus was found forming dense thickets in shallow rocky substrates around Masirah Island and the Dhofar area in Oman. Such aggregations of tunicates have not been reported before from coral reefs in the Indo-West Pacific region and the Atlantic. This observation contributes to our understanding of the ecology and biogeography of ascidians, setting the stage for a comprehensive species description and in-depth analysis of this species.

Short-Lived Aggregations of Filograna/Salmacina Tube Worms in the Gulf of Oman
Dense aggregations of serpulid worms were encountered in the Daymaniyat Islands (Gulf of Oman) from 10 to 20 m depth, over the period January–March, 2021. The species responsible for these aggregations belongs to the Filograna/Salmacina-complex (Annelida: Serpulidae). This species has been present in the area and observed along the Oman coastline, but high-density aggregates like this have not been reported before. The most probable cause of the aggregations, supported by field observations and Aqua-MODIS satellite data, was natural eutrophication with a subsequent algal bloom linked to the local winter monsoon. This observation emphasises the importance of documenting biodiversity and dynamics of reef communities along the Oman coastline.

We document the benthic ctenophores Coeloplana sp. and Vallicula multiformis from Oman, extending their geographic range. A new Coeloplana species was found forming aggregations on gorgonians of two octocoral host genera, Melithaea and Euplexaura, representing associations previously unknown to occur in the Indo-West Pacific region. Our findings also illustrate the concurrent presence of the ectocommensal ophiuroid Ophiothela mirabilis, which adversely affects other Coeloplana species in the tropical West Atlantic, where it is considered invasive. This exploration contributes to our understanding of the biogeography, species distribution, and ectosymbiotic associations of these genera, setting the stage for a comprehensive species description and in-depth analysis of host relationships in future studies.more » « less

Abstract Mass mortality of the dominant coral reef herbivore Diadema antillarum in the Caribbean in the early 1980s contributed to a persistent phase shift from coral- to algal-dominated reefs. In 2022, a scuticociliate most closely related to Philaster apodigitiformis caused further mass mortality of D. antillarum across the Caribbean, leading to >95% mortality at affected sites. Mortality was also reported in the related species Diadema setosum in the Mediterranean in 2022, though the causative agent of the Mediterranean outbreak has not yet been determined. In April 2023, mass mortality of Diadema setosum occurred along the Sultanate of Oman's coastline. Urchins displayed signs compatible with scuticociliatosis including abnormal behavior, drooping and loss of spines, followed by tissue necrosis and death. Here we report the detection of an 18S rRNA gene sequence in abnormal urchins from Muscat, Oman, that is identical to the Philaster strain responsible for D. antillarum mass mortality in the Caribbean. We also show that scuticociliatosis signs can be elicited in Diadema setosum by experimental challenge with the cultivated Philaster strain associated with Caribbean scuticociliatosis. These results demonstrate the Philaster sp. associated with D. antillarum mass mortality has rapidly spread to geographically distant coral reefs, compelling global-scale awareness and monitoring for this devastating condition through field surveys, microscopy, and molecular microbiological approaches, and prompting investigation of long-range transmission mechanisms.more » « less

For nearly two decades, stream baiting of northern and central California coastal streams has been an important tool in the management of sudden oak death, a devastating forest disease caused by the oomycete Phytophthora ramorum. Phytophthora species are baited with floating rhododendron leaves, serving as an early detection tool for the presence of P. ramorum in watersheds across more than 800 km of California coastline. While this long-standing management tool is focused on a single species of Phytophthora, other species of Phytophthora have been baited alongside P. ramorum, and this study documents the presence and distribution of 22 Phytophthora and Nothophytophthora species across the northern and central coasts of California. Although P. ramorum was isolated at the greatest number of sites, several species in subgeneric clade 6 were also abundant and widespread, a common feature of Phytophthora stream baiting studies. Clade 3 species P. nemorosa, P. pluvialis, and P. pseudosyringae were also frequently isolated in northern coastal streams. The species Nothophytophthora caduca and the genus Nothophytophthora are reported for the first time in North America along with the first report of P. pluvialis in California. Two novel species, Nothophytophthora sp. californica and P. sp. aureomontensis (a member of the P. citricola species complex) are provisionally named. Mitochondrial sequences revealed multiple hybridization events between P. lacustris and P. riparia. Stream monitoring can serve as an important tool for monitoring ongoing Phytophthora invasions as well as establishing baseline pathogen communities, critical data for preventing future invasions.more » « less

Acoustic indices are an efficient method for monitoring dense aggregations of vocal animals but require understanding the acoustic ecology of the species under examination. The present understanding of avian behavior and vocal development is primarily derived from the research of songbirds (Passeriformes). However, given that behavior and environment can differ greatly among bird orders, passerine birdsong may be insufficient to define the vocal ontogeny of non-passerine birds. Like many colonial nesting seabirds, the Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) is adapted to loud and congested environments with limited cues to identify kinship within aggregations of conspecifics. In addition to physical or geographical cues to identify offspring, adult P. adeliae rely on vocal modulation. Numerous studies have been conducted on mutual vocal modulations in mature P. adeliae, but limited research has explored the vocal repertoire of the chicks and how their vocalizations evolve over time. Using the deep learning-based system, DeepSqueak, this study characterized the vocal ontogeny of P. adeliae chicks in the West Antarctic Peninsula to aid in autonomously tracking their age. Understanding the phenological communication patterns of vocal-dependent seabirds can help measure the impact of climate change on this indicator species through non-invasive methods.more » « less
