The numerical predictor-corrector guidance method with a linear bank angle parameterization has been widely applied to various atmospheric entry guidance problems. However, it has been found that the linear bank angle approach has limitations in satisfying the final state requirement of a specific type of atmospheric entry mission. In response, this paper proposes a novel bank angle parameterization based on a logistic function, which improves the energy preservation capability and increases the potential final altitude at the end of the entry phase. The paper also suggests a guideline to determine a guidance law activation point for better entry performance. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed guidance scheme outperforms the linear bank profile approach and is suitable for future human Mars landing missions.

Advanced Autonomous Numerical Predictor-Corrector Guidance with Final Altitude and Velocity Constraints
The numerical predictor-corrector guidance with a bank angle parameterization has been employed in various entry examples where only a final range constraint is present. However, a future human Mars landing mission requires an accurate final location and a precise final altitude and velocity at the end of the entry trajectory. This paper proposes to use a quadratic bank parameterization to generate an entry trajectory that satisfies the multi-constraints. A solution space analysis confirms the numerical feasibility of the given entry problem. Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate the potential applicability of the proposed method for future Human Mars landing missions.

Entry guidance has played a vital role in planetary landing missions from the Apollo era to now. Modern techniques that directly utilize highly nonlinear entry dynamics, unlike the Apollo reentry guidance, are gaining attention. This study demonstrates that numerical predictor-corrector guidance can generate a trajectory that closely resembles the historic Apollo final reentry path. Secondly, it compares a conventional bank reversal algorithm with a prediction-based lateral guidance algorithm. Finally, the study proposes a predictive no-fly zone avoidance guidance algorithm that can effectively address geographic constraints for hypersonic gliding vehicles.more » « less

With the growing popularity of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the improvement of safety for UAV operations has become increasingly important. In this paper, a landing trajectory optimization scheme is proposed to generate reference landing trajectories for a fixed-wing UAV with accidental engine failure. For a specific landing objective, two types of landing trajectory optimization algorithms are investigated: i) trajectory optimization algorithm with nonlinear UAV dynamics, and ii) trajectory optimization algorithm with linearized UAV dynamics. An initialization procedure that generates an initial guess is introduced to accelerate the convergence of the optimization algorithms. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified in a high-fidelity UAV simulation environment, where the optimized landing trajectories are tracked by a UAV equipped with an L1 adaptive altitude controller in both the offline and online modes.more » « less

This paper introduces the Ironberry Plan. This practical plan leads to the construction of a science station in the iron region of the Meridiani Planum (IRoM), Mars. It also enables the continuation of NASA’s Water Strategy, the beginning of astronomy from Mars, the landing of humans at IRoM and the beginning of continuous human habitation there. A focus of the plan is to provide abundant electricity on Mars through an intense use of local resources. The characteristic early steps of the Ironberry Plan are: 1. The robotic harvesting and processing of a superb iron ore at IRoM; 2. The use of Mars-optimized, robot-controlled steel-making and manufacture of steel parts; 3. At least for some years, a deliberate push for mutually feeding exponential growth in electricity generation, steel-making and steel manufacture, where early steel manufacture is focused on making more electrical generation equipment; 4. Using the rapidly growing power capacity and advanced robotics and processing of local sediments, the start of many more foundational activities (i.e., water liberation, sulfur-concrete construction, multi-material manufacture, agriculture and more); 5. Using 1-4, the building of a science station at IRoM while also converting excavated sediment caverns into underground, radiation protected spaces for the science station. This paper addresses trajectory optimization for hypersonic vehicles under atmospheric and aerodynamic uncertainties using techniques from desensitized optimal control (DOC), wherein open-loop optimal controls are obtained by minimizing the sum of the standard objective function and a first-order penalty on trajectory variations due to parametric uncertainty. The proposed approach is demonstrated via numerical simulations of a minimum-final-time Earth reentry trajectory for an X-33 vehicle with an uncertain atmospheric scale height and drag coefficient. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that dispersions in the final position footprint and the final energy can be significantly reduced without closed-loop control and with little tradeoff in the performance metric set for the trajectory.more » « less
