Title: Asymptotic normalization coefficients for α+C12 synthesis and the S factor for C12(α,γ)O16 radiative capture
: The C 12 ( α , γ ) O 16 reaction, determining the survival of carbon in red giants, is of interest for nuclear reaction theory and nuclear astrophysics. A specific feature of the O 16 nuclear structure is the presence of two subthreshold bound states, (6.92 MeV, 2 + ) and (7.12 MeV, 1 ), that dominate the behavior of the low-energy S factor. The strength of these subthreshold states is determined by their asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs), which need to be known with high accuracy. : The objective of this research is to examine how the subthreshold and ground-state ANCs impact the low-energy S factor, especially at the key astrophysical energy of 300 keV . The S factors are calculated within the framework of the R -matrix method using the code. Our total S factor takes into account the E 1 and E 2 transitions to the ground state of O 16 including the interference of the subthreshold and higher resonances, which also interfere with the corresponding direct captures, and cascade radiative captures to the ground state of O 16 through four subthreshold states: 0 2 + , 3 , 2 + , and 1 . To evaluate the impact of subthreshold ANCs on the low-energy S factor, we employ two sets of the ANCs. The first selection, which offers higher ANC values, is attained through the extrapolation process [Blokhintsev , ]. The set with low ANC values was employed by deBoer []. A detailed comparison of the S factors at the most effective astrophysical energy of 300 keV is provided, along with an investigation into how the ground-state ANC affects this S factor. : The contribution to the total E 1 and E 2 S factors from the corresponding subthreshold resonances at 300 keV are ( 71 74 ) % and ( 102 103 ) % , respectively. The correlation of the uncertainties of the subthreshold ANCs with the E 1 and E 2 S ( 300 keV ) factors is found. The E 1 transition of the subthreshold resonance 1 does not depend on the ground-state ANC but interferes constructively with a broad ( 9.585 MeV ; 1 ) resonance giving (for the present subthreshold ANC) an additional 26 % contribution to the total E 1 S ( 300 keV ) factor. Interference of the E 2 transition through the subthreshold resonance 2 + with direct capture is almost negligible for small ground-state ANC of 58 fm 1 / 2 . However, its interference with direct capture for higher ground-state ANC of 337 fm 1 / 2 is significant and destructive, contributing 27 % . The low-energy S E 2 ( 300 keV ) factor experiences a smaller increase when both subthfreshold and the ground-state ANCs rise together due to their anticorrelation, compared to when only the subthreshold ANCs increase. 1. Here we report on the direct measurement of the resonance strengths of the E R lab = 647 keV and 1842 keV resonances in the Ca 40 ( p , γ ) Sc 41 reaction. At novae temperatures, 0.2 < T 9 < 0.7 , the Ca 40 ( p , γ ) Sc 41 reaction is governed by the low energy resonance at E R lab = 647 keV , whereas the E R lab = 1842 keV resonance serves as a normalization standard for nuclear reaction experiments within the astrophysically relevant energy range. For the E R lab = 647 keV resonance, we obtain a resonance strength ω γ = ( 2.51 ± 0 . 09 stat ± 0 . 22 syst ) meV , with an uncertainty a factor of 2.5 smaller than the previous direct measurement value. For the E R lab = 1842 keV resonance, we obtain a resonance strength ω γ = ( 0.148 ± 0 . 006 stat ± 0 . 013 syst ) eV , which is consistent with previous studies but deviates by 2 σ from the most recent measurement. Our results suggest Ca 40 to be a strong waiting point in the nucleosynthesis path of oxygen-neon (ONe) novae. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  2. We report spectroscopic and time-resolved experimental observations to characterize the [ Xe ] 4 f 13 ( F 5 / 2 o 2 ) 5 d 6 s ( D 1 ) 1 [ 5 / 2 ] 5 / 2 o state in Yb + 172  ions. We access this state from the metastable 4 f 14 5 d ( D 3 / 2 , 5 / 2 2 ) manifold and observe an unexpectedly long lifetime of τ = 37.9 ( 9 ) µ s  that allows visible Rabi oscillations and resolved-sideband spectroscopy. Using a combination of coherent population dynamics, high-fidelity detection and heralded state preparation, and optical pumping methods, we measure the branching ratios to the D 3 / 2 2 ,   D 5 / 2 2 , and S 1 / 2 2 states to be 0.359 ( 2 ) , 0.639(2), and 0.0023 ( 16 ) , respectively. The branching ratio to the 4 f 13 6 s 2 ( F 2 7 / 2 ) is compatible with zero within our experimental resolution. We also report measurements of Landé g -factor of the 1 [ 5 / 2 ] 5 / 2 o state. Further, the branching ratio of the D 5 / 2 2 to S 1 / 2 2 decay in Yb + 172  was measured to be 0.188(3), improving its relative uncertainty by an order of magnitude. Our measurements provide experimental benchmarks for better understanding the atomic structure of Yb +  ions, which still lacks accurate numerical descriptions, and the use of high-lying excited states for partial detection and qubit manipulation in the architecture.

  3. The first measurement of the e + e pair production at midrapidity and low invariant mass in central Pb-Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. The yield of e + e pairs is compared with a cocktail of expected hadronic decay contributions in the invariant mass ( m e e ) and pair transverse momentum ( p T , e e ) ranges m e e < 3.5 GeV / c 2 and p T , e e < 8 GeV / c . For 0.18 < m e e < 0.5 GeV / c 2 the ratio of data to the cocktail of hadronic contributions amounts to 1.40 ± 0.11 ( stat . ) ± 0.23 ( syst . ) ± 0.16 ( cocktail ) and 1.42 ± 0.11 ( stat . ) ± 0.23 ( syst . ) 0.29 + 0.24 ( cocktail ) , including or not including medium effects in the estimation of the heavy-flavor background, respectively. It is consistent with predictions from two different models for an additional contribution of thermal e + e pairs from the hadronic and partonic phases. In the intermediate-mass range ( 1.2 < m e e < 2.6 GeV / c 2 ), the pair transverse impact parameter of the e + e pairs ( DCA e e , where “DCA” denotes “distance of closest approach”) is used for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions to separate displaced dielectrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays from a possible (thermal) contribution produced at the interaction point. The data are consistent with a suppression of e + e pairs from c c ¯ and an additional prompt component. Finally, the first direct-photon measurement in the 10% most central Pb-Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV is reported via the study of virtual direct photons in the transverse momentum range 1 < p T < 5 GeV / c . A model including prompt photons, as well as photons from the preequilibrium and fluid-dynamic phases, can reproduce the result, while being at the upper edge of the data uncertainties.

  4. We realize a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of titanium (Ti) atoms, performing laser cooling on the 498 nm transition between the long-lived 3 d 3 ( F 4 ) 4 s a 5 F 5 metastable state and the 3 d 3 ( F 4 ) 4 p y 5 G 6 o excited state. Without the addition of any repumping light, we observe MOTs of the three stable, I = 0 bosonic isotopes, Ti 46 ,   Ti 48 , and Ti 50 . Up to 8.30 ( 26 ) × 10 5 Ti 48 atoms are trapped at a maximum density of 1.3 ( 4 ) × 10 11 cm 3 and at a temperature of 90 ( 15 ) µ K . By measuring the decay of the MOT, we constrain the leakage branching ratio of the cooling transition ( 2.5 × 10 6 ) and the two-body loss coefficient ( 2 × 10 10 cm 3 s 1 ). Our approach to laser cooling Ti can be applied to other transition metals, enabling a significant expansion of the elements that can be laser cooled. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  5. We report high-accuracy calculations of the ground and the lowest eight excited P o 2 states of the two stable isotopes of the boron atom, B 10 and B 11 , as well as of the boron atom with an infinite nuclear mass B . The nonrelativistic wave function of each of the states is generated in an independent variational calculation by expanding it in terms of a large number, 12 000 17 000 , of all-electron explicitly correlated Gaussian (ECG) functions whose nonlinear parameters are extensively optimized with a procedure that employs analytic energy gradient determined with respect to these parameters. These highly accurate wave functions are used to compute the fine-structure splittings using the first order of the perturbation theory ( α 2 ) , where α is the fine-structure constant, which are then corrected for the electron magnetic moment anomaly ( α 3 ) . As the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian explicitly depends on the mass of the nucleus, the recoil corrections up to the order of α 2 are automatically accounted for in the fine-structure calculations. Furthermore, the off-diagonal corrections to the fine structure ( α 4 ) are estimated using the multireference methods based on one-electron Gaussian orbitals. The results obtained in this paper are considerably more accurate than those available in the literature. Moreover, we report accurate splittings for a number of excited P o 2 states, for which there have been no reliable experimental or theoretical data at all. The calculated values presented in this paper may serve as a valuable guide for future experimental measurements of the fine structure of the boron atom. As the fine structure of an atom provides a spectral signature that can facilitate atom's detection, our data can also aid the search for trace amounts of boron in the interstellar medium.
