Asymptotic giant branch stars are responsible for the production of most of the heavy isotopes beyond Sr observed in the solar system. Among them, isotopes shielded from the -process contribution by their stable isobars are defined as -only nuclei. For a long time the abundance of , the heaviest -only isotope, has been a topic of debate because state-of-the-art stellar models appeared to systematically underestimate its solar abundance. Besides the impact of uncertainties from stellar models and galactic chemical evolution simulations, this discrepancy was further obscured by rather divergent theoretical estimates for the neutron capture cross section of its radioactive precursor in the neutron-capture flow, ( ), and by the lack of experimental data on this reaction. We present the first ever neutron capture measurement on , conducted at the CERN neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF, employing a sample of only 9 mg of produced at the Institute Laue Langevin high flux reactor. By complementing our new results with semiempirical calculations we obtained, at the -process temperatures of and , Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) of 580(168) mb and 260(90) mb, respectively. These figures are about 3% lower and 20% higher than the corresponding values widely used in astrophysical calculations, which were based only on theoretical calculations. By using the new MACS, the uncertainty arising from the cross section on the -process abundance of has been reduced from down to , and the -process calculations are in agreement with the latest solar system abundance of reported by K. Proton emission in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV
The first measurements of proton emission accompanied by neutron emission in the electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) of nuclei in the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. The EMD protons and neutrons emitted at very forward rapidities are detected by the proton and neutron zero degree calorimeters of the ALICE experiment. The emission cross sections of zero, one, two, and three protons accompanied by at least one neutron were measured in ultraperipheral collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair . The 0p and 3p cross sections are described by the RELDIS model within their measurement uncertainties, while the 1p and 2p cross sections are underestimated by the model by 17–25%. According to this model, these 0p, 1p, 2p, and 3p cross sections are associated, respectively, with the production of various isotopes of Pb, Tl, Hg, and Au in the EMD of . The cross sections of the emission of a single proton accompanied by the emission of one, two, or three neutrons in EMD were also measured. The data are significantly overestimated by the RELDIS model, which predicts that the (1p,1n), (1p,2n), and (1p,3n) cross sections are very similar to the cross sections for the production of the thallium isotopes . ©2025 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2025CERN

We measured one- and two-proton removal cross sections from and , respectively, extracting spectroscopic factors and comparing them to shell model overlap functions coupled with eikonal reaction model calculations. The invariant mass technique was used to reconstruct the two-body ( ) and three-body ( ) decay energies from knockout reactions of (106.2 MeV/u) and (112.8 MeV/u) beams impinging on a target. The one-proton removal from strongly populated the ground state of and the extracted cross section of mb agrees with eikonal model calculations that are normalized by the shell model spectroscopic factors and account for the systematic reduction factor observed for single nucleon removal reactions within the models used. Machine learning enabled measurements of astrophysical ( ) reactions with the SECAR recoil separatorTsintari, P; Dimitrakopoulos, N; Garg, R; Hermansen, K; Marshall, C; Montes, F; Perdikakis, G; Schatz, H; Setoodehnia, K; Arora, H; et al (, Physical Review Research)The synthesis of heavy elements in supernovae is affected by low-energy and reactions on unstable nuclei, yet experimental data on such reaction rates are scarce. The SECAR (SEparator for CApture Reactions) recoil separator at FRIB (Facility for Rare Isotope Beams) was originally designed to measure astrophysical reactions that change the mass of a nucleus significantly. We used a novel approach that integrates machine learning with ion-optical simulations to find an ion-optical solution for the separator that enables the measurement of reactions, despite the reaction leaving the mass of the nucleus nearly unchanged. A new measurement of the reaction in inverse kinematics with a MeV/nucleon beam (corresponding to MeV proton energy in normal kinematics) yielded a cross-section of mb and served as a proof of principle experiment for the new technique demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving the required performance criteria. At novae temperatures, , the reaction is governed by the low energy resonance at , whereas the resonance serves as a normalization standard for nuclear reaction experiments within the astrophysically relevant energy range. For the resonance, we obtain a resonance strength , with an uncertainty a factor of 2.5 smaller than the previous direct measurement value. For the resonance, we obtain a resonance strength , which is consistent with previous studies but deviates by from the most recent measurement. Despite this magicity, which acts to provide a strong restorative force toward sphericity, it is known to exhibit both strong octupole correlations and some of the strongest quadrupole collectivity observed in doubly magic systems. In this Letter, we employ state-of-the-art experimental equipment to conclusively demonstrate, through four Coulomb-excitation measurements, the presence of a large, negative, spectroscopic quadrupole moment for both the vibrational octupole and quadrupole state, indicative of a preference for prolate deformation of the states. The observed quadrupole moment is discussed in the context of the expected splitting of the two-phonon states, due to the coupling of the quadrupole and octupole motion. These results are compared with theoretical values from three different methods, which are unable to reproduce both the sign and magnitude of this deformation. The EMD protons and neutrons emitted at very forward rapidities are detected by the proton and neutron zero degree calorimeters of the ALICE experiment. The emission cross sections of zero, one, two, and three protons accompanied by at least one neutron were measured in ultraperipheralPb208−Pb208collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pairsNN=5.02TeV. The 0p and 3p cross sections are described by the RELDIS model within their measurement uncertainties, while the 1p and 2p cross sections are underestimated by the model by 17–25%. According to this model, these 0p, 1p, 2p, and 3p cross sections are associated, respectively, with the production of various isotopes of Pb, Tl, Hg, and Au in the EMD ofPb208. The cross sections of the emission of a single proton accompanied by the emission of one, two, or three neutrons in EMD were also measured. The data are significantly overestimated by the RELDIS model, which predicts that the (1p,1n), (1p,2n), and (1p,3n) cross sections are very similar to the cross sections for the production of the
