Title: In situ dissolved oxygen of experimental chambers and ambient sensors acquired in the shallow subtidal shore-accessible site in Bon Secour Bay, Mobile Bay, Alabama, USA between August 7-12, 2021
This dataset is part of a field study examining the effect of diel oxygen cycling on faunal activity, and in turn sediment oxygen demand. The field experiment used in situ flow-through benthic chambers to measure oxygen consumption, as described in the methods paper Gadeken et al 2023. The chambers were deployed and retrieved in three ~24 hour deployments in a shallow subtidal area of Bon Secour Bay in Mobile Bay, AL, in August 2021. This dataset contains streamlined data from the HOBO dissolved oxygen (DO) loggers and the log time of when the chamber system flushes the overlying water in the chamber and starts a new incubation.  more » « less

  2. This data set includes data and scripts from a field study examining the effect of diel oxygen cycling on faunal activity, and in turn sediment oxygen demand. The field experiment used in situ flow-through benthic chambers to measure oxygen consumption, as described in the methods paper Gadeken et al 2023 in L&O:Methods. The chambers were deployed and retrieved in three ~24 hour deployments in a shallow subtidal area of Bon Secour Bay in Mobile Bay, AL, in August 2021. Included in this data set are the raw data files of oxygen and temperature measurements from Onset HOBO DO loggers integrated into the benthic chamber system, annotated MATLAB scripts and workspaces detailing data processing and analysis, and faunal community data from the benthic chambers.

  3. This dataset is part of a field study examining the effect of diel oxygen cycling on faunal activity, and in turn sediment oxygen demand. The field experiment used in situ flow-through benthic chambers to measure oxygen consumption. The chambers were deployed and retrieved in three ~24 hour deployments in a shallow subtidal area of Bon Secour Bay in Mobile Bay, AL, in August 2021. This dataset contains the abundances of all macrofaunal taxa as well as the total biomass and the biomass of some major taxa found in each of the chambers. The Abunance data have not been normalized to meters squared. The biomass values have been normalized to meters squared from the values taken from the chambers, which occupy a smaller area.

  4. This dataset includes water-column data collected from the Beaufort Shelf during the open-water seasons in 2020, 2021, and 2022. The 2020 data include water-column profiles (salinity, temperature, depth, turbidity, particle size distributions, particle volume concentrations, and uncorrected clorophyll-a) collected with an RBR CTD/Tu (conductivity, temperature, depth, turbidity) sensor and LISST sensor from R/V Sikuliaq and its workboat. Most sites were in the Harrison Bay region (north of the Colville Delta and Simpson Lagoon) and a few were located farther east. The 2021 and 2022 data include the same CTD/Tu and LISST data that were collected in 2020, but are focused in Harrison Bay and also include profiles of light intensity (photosynthetically active radiation) as well as ADCP (acoustic doppler current profile) profiles from a pole-mounted Nortek Signature 500 kilohertz (kHz) sensor. In 2021, additional data include filtration data (total suspended solids, suspended sediment concentrations, and organic fractions) from water samples and hi-resolution echosounder data from the Nortek ADCP. These data are being incorporated into publications about summertime water-column properties and sediment transport dynamics within Harrison Bay (Eidam et al., pending).

  5. METHODS: Fluxes were measured using a system of 8 automatic gas-sampling chambers made of transparent Lexan (n=3 each in the palsa and bog habitats, and n=2 in the fen habitat). Chambers were initially installed in the three habitat types at Stordalen Mire in 2001 (Bäckstrand et al., 2008) and the chamber lids were replaced in 2011 with the current design, similar to that described by Bubier et al 2003. Chambers cover an area of 0.2 m2 (45 cm x 45 cm), with a height ranging from 15-75 cm depending on habitat vegetation. At the Palsa and bog site the chamber base is flush with the ground and the chamber lid (15 cm in height) lifts clear of the base between closures. At the fen site the chamber base is raised 50–60 cm on lexon skirts to accommodate large stature vegetation. The chambers are connected to the gas analysis system, located in an adjacent temperature-controlled cabin, by 3/8” Dekoron tubing through which air is circulated at approximately 2.5 L min-1. Each chamber lid is closed once every 3 hours for a period of 8 min, with a 5 min flush period before and after lid closure. Gas concentration in the chamber headspace was measured with a Los Gatos Research (LGR) Fast Greenhouse Gas Analyzer, with timing control and data acquisition using a Campbell CR10x (Holmes et al., 2022).
