The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high ) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at . A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter , 0.4, and 0.5 in the range and trigger-recoil jet azimuthal separation . The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low and at large azimuthal deviation from . The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on , which has a slope that differs from zero by . Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. These comparisons indicate that the observed yield enhancement arises from the response of the QGP medium to jet propagation. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

Magnetic x-ray spectroscopy of Gd-doped EuO thin films
We present a detailed x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study of the magnetic properties of Gd-doped EuO thin films, synthesized via molecular-beam epitaxy with Gd doping levels up to over 12%. The impact of Gd doping on the electronic and magnetic behavior of EuO is studied using XMCD and magnetometry. Gd doping significantly enhances the Curie temperature ( ) from 69 K in undoped EuO to over 120 K, driven by increased carrier density, while preserving the high quality of the single-crystalline films. At higher doping levels, a plateau in is observed, which is attributed to the formation of Eu-Gd nearest-neighbor pairs that limit dopant activation. We also observe a distinctive “double-dome” structure in the temperature-dependent magnetization, which we attribute to both the ferromagnetic ordering of Eu moments at lower temperatures and the influence of conduction electrons via exchange interactions at higher temperatures. These findings provide key insights into the mechanisms of carrier-induced magnetic transitions. Published by the American Physical Society2025

This paper reports the first measurement of the transverse momentum ( ) spectra of primary charged pions, kaons, (anti)protons, and unidentified particles as a function of the charged-particle flattenicity in pp collisions at . Flattenicity is a novel event shape observable that is measured in the pseudorapidity intervals covered by the V0 detector, and . According to QCD-inspired phenomenological models, it shows sensitivity to multiparton interactions and is less affected by biases toward larger due to local multiplicity fluctuations in the V0 acceptance than multiplicity. The analysis is performed in minimum-bias (MB) as well as in high-multiplicity events up to . The event selection requires at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval . The measured distributions, average , kaon-to-pion and proton-to-pion particle ratios, presented in this paper, are compared to model calculations using 8 based on color strings and EPOS LHC. The modification of the -spectral shapes in low-flattenicity events that have large event activity with respect to those measured in MB events develops a pronounced peak at intermediate ( ), and approaches the vicinity of unity at higher . The results are qualitatively described by , and they show different behavior than those measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity based on the V0M estimator. © 2025 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2025CERNmore » « less

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is a versatile class of quantum materials of interest to various fields including, e.g., nanoelectronics, optical devices, and topological and correlated quantum matter. Tailoring the electronic properties of TMDs is essential to their applications in many directions. Here, we report that a highly controllable and uniform on-chip 2D metallization process converts a class of atomically thin TMDs into robust superconductors, a property belonging to none of the starting materials. As examples, we demonstrate the introduction of superconductivity into a class of 2D air-sensitive topological TMDs, including monolayers of , , and , as well as their natural and twisted bilayers, metallized with an ultrathin layer of palladium. This class of TMDs is known to exhibit intriguing topological phases ranging from topological insulator, Weyl semimetal to fractional Chern insulator. The unique, high-quality two-dimensional metallization process is based on our recent findings of the long-distance, non-Fickian in-plane mass transport and chemistry in 2D that occur at relatively low temperatures and in devices fully encapsulated with inert insulating layers. Highly compatible with existing nanofabrication techniques for van der Waals stacks, our results offer a route to designing and engineering superconductivity and topological phases in a class of correlated 2D materials. Through laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments, we synthesize a series of rubidium superhydrides and explore their properties with synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements, combined with density functional theory calculations. Upon heating rubidium monohydride embedded in at a pressure of 18 GPa, we form , which is stable upon decompression down to 8.7 GPa, the lowest stability pressure of any known superhydride. At 22 GPa, another polymorph, is synthesised at high temperature. Unique to the Rb-H system among binary metal hydrides is that further compression does not promote the formation of polyhydrides with higher hydrogen content. Instead, heating above 87 GPa yields , which exhibits two polymorphs ( and ). All of the crystal structures comprise a complex network of quasimolecular units and anions, with providing the first experimental evidence of linear anions. A search for hidden-charm pentaquark states decaying to a range of and final states, as well as doubly charmed pentaquark states to and , is made using samples of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of recorded by the LHCb detector at . Since no significant signals are found, upper limits are set on the pentaquark yields relative to that of the baryon in the decay mode. The known pentaquark states are also investigated, and their signal yields are found to be consistent with zero in all cases. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2024CERNmore » « less
