A<sc>bstract</sc> Long- and short-range correlations for pairs of charged particles are studied via two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV and p–Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV. The correlation functions are measured as a function of relative azimuthal angle ∆φand pseudorapidity separation ∆ηfor pairs of primary charged particles within the pseudorapidity interval |η|<0.9 and the transverse-momentum interval 1< pT<4 GeV/c. Flow coefficients are extracted for the long-range correlations (1.6<|∆η|<1.8) in various high-multiplicity event classes using the low-multiplicity template fit method. The method is used to subtract the enhanced yield of away-side jet fragments in high-multiplicity events. These results show decreasing flow signals toward lower multiplicity events. Furthermore, the flow coefficients for events with hard probes, such as jets or leading particles, do not exhibit any significant changes compared to those obtained from high-multiplicity events without any specific event selection criteria. The results are compared with hydrodynamic-model calculations, and it is found that a better understanding of the initial conditions is necessary to describe the results, particularly for low-multiplicity events.

A<sc>bstract</sc> Short-range correlations between charged particles are studied via two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV. The correlation functions are measured as a function of the relative azimuthal angle ∆φand the pseudorapidity separation ∆ηfor pairs of primary charged particles within the pseudorapidity interval |η|<0.9 and the transverse-momentum range 1< pT<8 GeV/c. Near-side (|∆φ|<1.3) peak widths are extracted from a generalised Gaussian fitted over the correlations in full pseudorapidity separation (|∆η|<1.8), while the per-trigger associated near-side yields are extracted for the short-range correlations (|∆η|<1.3). Both are evaluated as a function of charged-particle multiplicity obtained by two different event activity estimators. The width of the near-side peak decreases with increasing multiplicity, and this trend is reproduced qualitatively by the Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA 8, AMPT, and EPOS. However, the models overestimate the width in the low transverse-momentum region (pT<3 GeV/c). The per-trigger associated near-side yield increases with increasing multiplicity. Although this trend is also captured qualitatively by the considered event generators, the yield is mostly overestimated by the models in the considered kinematic range. The measurement of the shape and yield of the short-range correlation peak can help us understand the interplay between jet fragmentation and event activity, quantify the narrowing trend of the near-side peak as a function of transverse momentum and multiplicity selections in pp collisions, and search for final-state jet modification in small collision systems.

U.; Ahuja, I.; et al (, The European Physical Journal C)Abstract The azimuthal ($$\Delta \varphi $$ ) correlation distributions between heavy-flavor decay electrons and associated charged particles are measured in pp and p–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{{NN}}}} = 5.02$$ TeV. Results are reported for electrons with transverse momentum$$4<16$$ $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ and pseudorapidity$$|\eta |<0.6$$ . The associated charged particles are selected with transverse momentum$$1<7$$ $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ , and relative pseudorapidity separation with the leading electron$$|\Delta \eta | < 1$$ . The correlation measurements are performed to study and characterize the fragmentation and hadronization of heavy quarks. The correlation structures are fitted with a constant and two von Mises functions to obtain the baseline and the near- and away-side peaks, respectively. The results from p–Pb collisions are compared with those from pp collisions to study the effects of cold nuclear matter. In the measured trigger electron and associated particle kinematic regions, the two collision systems give consistent results. The$$\Delta \varphi $$ distribution and the peak observables in pp and p–Pb collisions are compared with calculations from various Monte Carlo event generators.more » « less

U.; et al (, Journal of High Energy Physics)null (Ed.)A bstract Two-particle angular correlations are measured in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The yields of particle pairs at short-(∆ η ∼ 0) and long-range (1 . 6 < |∆ η | < 1 . 8) in pseudorapidity are extracted on the near-side (∆ φ ∼ 0). They are reported as a function of transverse momentum ( p T ) in the range 1 < p T < 4 GeV/ c . Furthermore, the event-scale dependence is studied for the first time by requiring the presence of high- p T leading particles or jets for varying p T thresholds. The results demonstrate that the long-range “ridge” yield, possibly related to the collective behavior of the system, is present in events with high- p T processes as well. The magnitudes of the short- and long-range yields are found to grow with the event scale. The results are compared to EPOS LHC and PYTHIA 8 calculations, with and without string-shoving interactions. It is found that while both models describe the qualitative trends in the data, calculations from EPOS LHC show a better quantitative agreement for the p T dependency, while overestimating the event-scale dependency.more » « less

M.; Aglieri Rinella, G.; Agnello, M.; Agrawal, N.; Ahammed, Z.; Ahmad, S.; et al (, The European Physical Journal C)null (Ed.)Abstract The measurement of the azimuthal-correlation function of prompt D mesons with charged particles in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} =5.02\ \hbox {TeV}$$ s = 5.02 TeV and p–Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02\ \hbox {TeV}$$ s NN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC is reported. The $$\mathrm{D}^{0}$$ D 0 , $$\mathrm{D}^{+} $$ D + , and $$\mathrm{D}^{*+} $$ D ∗ + mesons, together with their charge conjugates, were reconstructed at midrapidity in the transverse momentum interval $$3< p_\mathrm{T} < 24\ \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 3 < p T < 24 GeV / c and correlated with charged particles having $$p_\mathrm{T} > 0.3\ \hbox {GeV}/c$$ p T > 0.3 GeV / c and pseudorapidity $$|\eta | < 0.8$$ | η | < 0.8 . The properties of the correlation peaks appearing in the near- and away-side regions (for $$\Delta \varphi \approx 0$$ Δ φ ≈ 0 and $$\Delta \varphi \approx \pi $$ Δ φ ≈ π , respectively) were extracted via a fit to the azimuthal correlation functions. The shape of the correlation functions and the near- and away-side peak features are found to be consistent in pp and p–Pb collisions, showing no modifications due to nuclear effects within uncertainties. The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo simulations performed with the PYTHIA, POWHEG+PYTHIA, HERWIG, and EPOS 3 event generators.more » « less

The measurements are performed as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity ⟨dNch/dη⟩, which is related to the energy density produced in the collision. The results include transverse momentum (pT) distributions,pT-integrated yields, mean transverse momenta of Σ(1385)±and Ξ(1530)0, as well as ratios of thepT-integrated resonance yields relative to yields of other hadron species. The Σ(1385)±/π±and Ξ(1530)0/π±yield ratios are consistent with the trend of the enhancement of strangeness production from low to high multiplicity pp collisions, which was previously observed for strange and multi-strange baryons. The yield ratio between the measured resonances and the long-lived baryons with the same strangeness content exhibits a hint of a mild increasing trend at low multiplicity, despite too large uncertainties to exclude the flat behaviour. The results are compared with predictions from models such as EPOS-LHC and PYTHIA 8 with Rope shoving. The latter provides the best description of the multiplicity dependence of the Σ(1385)±and Ξ(1530)0production in pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV.more » « less

The correlation functions are measured as a function of the relative azimuthal angle ∆φand the pseudorapidity separation ∆ηfor pairs of primary charged particles within the pseudorapidity interval |η|<0.9 and the transverse-momentum range 1< pT<8 GeV/c. Near-side (|∆φ|<1.3) peak widths are extracted from a generalised Gaussian fitted over the correlations in full pseudorapidity separation (|∆η|<1.8), while the per-trigger associated near-side yields are extracted for the short-range correlations (|∆η|<1.3). Both are evaluated as a function of charged-particle multiplicity obtained by two different event activity estimators. The width of the near-side peak decreases with increasing multiplicity, and this trend is reproduced qualitatively by the Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA 8, AMPT, and EPOS. However, the models overestimate the width in the low transverse-momentum region (pT<3 GeV/c). The per-trigger associated near-side yield increases with increasing multiplicity. Although this trend is also captured qualitatively by the considered event generators, the yield is mostly overestimated by the models in the considered kinematic range. The measurement of the shape and yield of the short-range correlation peak can help us understand the interplay between jet fragmentation and event activity, quantify the narrowing trend of the near-side peak as a function of transverse momentum and multiplicity selections in pp collisions, and search for final-state jet modification in small collision systems.}, journal = {Journal of High
