Abstract A novelC3symmetric 1,1’‐bi‐2‐naphthol‐based Schiff base (R,R,R)‐6has been synthesized which shows highly selective fluorescence enhancement with Zn2+among 21 metal cations examined. Its sensitivity and selectivity are found to be greater than other relatedC2(1) andC1[(R)‐9] symmetric compounds in the fluorescent recognition of Zn2+. The mechanistic study reveals that the selective fluorescence enhancement of the probe can be attributed to the formation of a unimolecular multidentate 6‐coordinated Zn2+complex.

Flux Growth of La 3 MC 2 ( M = Sb, Bi, Te), a New Family of Ternary Carbides
Reactions of carbon with a heavy main group metal (M = Sb, Bi, or Te) in an excess of lanthanum/nickel eutectic flux lead to formation of a family of carbide compounds La3MC2with a new structure type. The monoclinic structure features C24−anions octahedrally coordinated by six La3+cations, andManions surrounded by 8 La3+cations. These compounds are not charge‐balanced and lie on the border between intermetallic carbides and mixed anion salts. Density of states calculations show a pseudogap at the Fermi level for La3BiC2, which indicates that this compound is a poor metal with optimized LaBi bonding interactions.

Abstract 3‐Hydroxypiperidinium pentaiodide was synthesized by a facile reaction in concentrated aqueous HI. Its crystal structure comprises 3‐hydroxypiperidinium cations and pentaiodide anions, the latter having geometry ofcis‐shaped chains composed of I2and I3−building units. The analysis of interatomic distances, Raman spectroscopy data, and results of DFT calculations, including non‐covalent interaction analysis, showed that the title compound exhibits a complex pattern of covalent and non‐covalent interactions. Those include I−I covalent bonds and I⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonds within the I5−anion as well as (N)H⋅⋅⋅I and (O)H⋅⋅⋅I hydrogen bonds and even weaker (C)H⋅⋅⋅I van‐der‐Waals interactions between the cations and anions.more » « less

Abstract Multiple bonds between boron and transition metals are known in many borylene (:BR) complexes via metal dπ→BR back‐donation, despite the electron deficiency of boron. An electron‐precise metal–boron triple bond was first observed in BiB2O−[Bi≡B−B≡O]−in which both boron atoms can be viewed as sp‐hybridized and the [B−BO]−fragment is isoelectronic to a carbyne (CR). To search for the first electron‐precise transition‐metal‐boron triple‐bond species, we have produced IrB2O−and ReB2O−and investigated them by photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum‐chemical calculations. The results allow to elucidate the structures and bonding in the two clusters. We find IrB2O−has a closed‐shell bent structure (Cs,1A′) with BO−coordinated to an Ir≡B unit, (−OB)Ir≡B, whereas ReB2O−is linear (C∞v,3Σ−) with an electron‐precise Re≡B triple bond, [Re≡B−B≡O]−. The results suggest the intriguing possibility of synthesizing compounds with electron‐precise M≡B triple bonds analogous to classical carbyne systems.more » « less

Abstract Reactions of the IrVhydride [MeBDIDipp]IrH4{BDI=(Dipp)NC(Me)CH(Me)CN(Dipp); Dipp=2,6‐iPr2C6H3} with E[N(SiMe3)2]2(E=Sn, Pb) afforded the unusual dimeric dimetallotetrylenes ([MeBDIDipp]IrH)2(μ2‐E)2in good yields. Moreover, ([MeBDIDipp]IrH)2(μ2‐Ge)2was formed in situ from thermal decomposition of [MeBDIDipp]Ir(H)2Ge[N(SiMe3)2]2. These reactions are accompanied by liberation of HN(SiMe3)2and H2through the apparent cleavage of an E−N(SiMe3)2bond by Ir−H. In a reversal of this process, ([MeBDIDipp]IrH)2(μ2‐E)2reacted with excess H2to regenerate [MeBDIDipp]IrH4. Varying the concentrations of reactants led to formation of the trimeric ([MeBDIDipp]IrH2)3(μ2‐E)3. The further scope of this synthetic route was investigated with group 15 amides, and ([MeBDIDipp]IrH)2(μ2‐Bi)2was prepared by the reaction of [MeBDIDipp]IrH4with Bi(NMe2)3or Bi(OtBu)3to afford the first example of a “naked” two‐coordinate Bi atom bound exclusively to transition metals. A viable mechanism that accounts for the formation of these products is proposed. Computational investigations of the Ir2E2(E=Sn, Pb) compounds characterized them as open‐shell singlets with confined nonbonding lone pairs at the E centers. In contrast, Ir2Bi2is characterized as having a closed‐shell singlet ground state.more » « less

Bis(triphenylsulfonium) tetrachloridomanganate(II), (C18H15S)2[MnCl4] (I), triphenylsulfonium tetrachloridoferrate(III), (C18H15S)[FeCl4] (II), and bis(triphenylsulfonium) tetrachloridocobaltate(II), (C18H15S)2[CoCl4] (III), crystallize in the monoclinic space groupsP21/n[(I) and (III)] andP21/c[(II)]. Compounds (I) and (III) each contain two crystallographically independent triphenylsulfonium (TPS+) cations in the asymmetric unit, whereas (II) has one. In all three compounds, the sulfonium centers adopt distorted trigonal–pyramidal geometries, with S—C bond lengths falling roughly in the 1.78–1.79 Å range and C—S—C angles observed at about 101 to 106°. The [MCl4]n−anions (M= Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+;n= 2,1,2) adopt slightly distorted tetrahedral geometries, withM—Cl bond lengths in the 2.19–2.38 Å range and Cl—M—Cl angles of approximately 104–113°. Hirshfeld surface analyses shows that H...H and H...C contacts dominate the TPS+cation environments, whereas H...Cl and shortM—S interactions link each [MCl4]n−anion to the surrounding cations. In (I) and (III), inversion-centered π–π stacking further consolidates the crystal packing, while in (II) no π–π interactions are observed.more » « less
