Title: Loss of pigments in females is associated with sexual dichromatism in an ornamental trait
Abstract Sexual dichromatism is thought to evolve primarily as a function of sexual selection, especially female choice. However, other forces, from sex-specific environmental conditions to social signaling in females, can also generate color differences between sexes. We studied dewlap dichromatism across 292 species of Anolis lizards. Dewlaps are colorful throat ornaments found on males of most anole species but are also present in females in many species. Although male and female dewlaps often have similar coloration, in some species, they are strikingly dichromatic. We found that ornament color is labile and that dichromatism results from the loss of costly pigments in females. This pattern could indicate a shift towards signal loss in females; however, the secondary gains of female dewlaps across the phylogeny suggest a potential advantageous function. Possible mechanisms for female dewlap coloration include social selection, nonsexual signaling, or detectability in different microhabitats (e.g., sensory drive). Female dewlap color overlap between co-occurring species is both less than expected by chance overall and reduced in species-rich communities, suggesting that dichromatism could be driven by competition. Our results highlight that selection on females drives the observed pattern of dichromatism, suggesting a potentially adaptive role for female ornaments and emphasizing the need for additional work to understand female ornament evolution.  more » « less

  1. Extravagant ornaments are thought to signal male quality to females choosing mates, but the evidence linking ornament size to male quality is controversial, particularly in cases in which females prefer different ornaments in different populations. Here, we use whole-genome sequencing and transcriptomics to determine the genetic basis of ornament size in two populations of a widespread warbler, the common yellowthroat ( Geothlypis trichas ). Within a single subspecies, females in a Wisconsin population prefer males with larger black masks as mates, while females in a New York population prefer males with larger yellow bibs. Despite being produced by different pigments in different patches on the body, the size of the ornament preferred by females in each population was linked to numerous genes that function in many of the same core aspects of male quality (e.g., immunity and oxidative balance). These relationships confirm recent hypotheses linking the signaling function of ornaments to male quality. Furthermore, the parallelism in signaling function provides the flexibility for different types of ornaments to be used as signals of similar aspects of male quality. This could facilitate switches in female preference for different ornaments, a potentially important step in the early stages of divergence among populations.

  2. ABSTRACT In true color vision, animals discriminate between light wavelengths, regardless of intensity, using at least two photoreceptors with different spectral sensitivity peaks. Heliconius butterflies have duplicate UV opsin genes, which encode ultraviolet and violet photoreceptors, respectively. In Heliconius erato, only females express the ultraviolet photoreceptor, suggesting females (but not males) can discriminate between UV wavelengths. We tested the ability of H. erato, and two species lacking the violet receptor, Heliconius melpomene and Eueides isabella, to discriminate between 380 and 390 nm, and between 400 and 436 nm, after being trained to associate each stimulus with a sugar reward. We found that only H. erato females have color vision in the UV range. Across species, both sexes show color vision in the blue range. Models of H. erato color vision suggest that females have an advantage over males in discriminating the inner UV-yellow corollas of Psiguria flowers from their outer orange petals. Moreover, previous models ( McCulloch et al., 2017) suggested that H. erato males have an advantage over females in discriminating Heliconius 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-OHK) yellow wing coloration from non-3-OHK yellow wing coloration found in other heliconiines. These results provide some of the first behavioral evidence for female H. erato UV color discrimination in the context of foraging, lending support to the hypothesis ( Briscoe et al., 2010) that the duplicated UV opsin genes function together in UV color vision. Taken together, the sexually dimorphic visual system of H. erato appears to have been shaped by both sexual selection and sex-specific natural selection.

  3. Abstract Sexually dimorphic behaviour is pervasive across animals, with males and females exhibiting different mate selection, parental care, foraging, dispersal, and territorial strategies. However, the genetic underpinnings of sexually dimorphic behaviours are poorly understood. Here we investigate gene networks and expression patterns associated with sexually dimorphic imprinting‐like learning in the butterflyBicyclus anynana. In this species, both males and females learn visual preferences, but learn preferences for different traits and use different signals as salient, unconditioned cues. To identify genes and gene networks associated with this behaviour, we examined gene expression profiles of the brains and eyes of male and female butterflies immediately post training and compared them to the same tissues of naïve individuals. We found more differentially expressed genes and a greater number of associated gene networks in the eyes, indicating a role of the peripheral nervous system in visual imprinting‐like learning. Females had higher chemoreceptor expression levels than males, supporting the hypothesized sexual dimorphic use of chemical cues during the learning process. In addition, genes that influenceB. anynanawing patterns (sexual ornaments), such asinvected,spalt, andapterous, were also differentially expressed in the brain and eye, suggesting that these genes may influence both sexual ornaments and the preferences for these ornaments. Our results indicate dynamic and sex‐specific responses to social scenario in both the peripheral and central nervous systems and highlight the potential role of wing patterning genes in mate preference and learning across the Lepidoptera.

  4. Color signals in animals are often honest, containing information about the individual for potential mates or predators. Both males and females may have honest color signals, though female signals are less often assessed for honesty. Different colorimetric traits, such as overall brightness, hue, ultraviolet brightness, or carotenoid chroma, may be assessed by receivers for information. Painted Turtles, Chrysemys picta (Schneider, 1783), are a brightly colored and widely distributed freshwater turtle species with no visible sexual dichromatism, but the function of their coloration is unknown. We assess two populations of Painted Turtles to compare colorimetric traits across and within populations, and to determine whether any color traits correlate with innate immune function. We find that there is greater carotenoid chroma on areas of the shell not typically associated with courtship than on the neck stripes that are thought to have a role in mate choice. We also find that only one measure of coloration in one color patch, the carotenoid chroma of the neck stripes, is correlated with bactericidal capacity, and in only one population. This system provides an example of a common species having vibrant but understudied coloration that may provide insights into unknown functions of color or uncommon sexual selection variation.

  5. Abstract Elaborate, sexually dimorphic traits are widely thought to evolve under sexual selection through female preference, male–male competition, or both. The orangethroat darter (Etheostoma spectabile) is a sexually dichromatic fish in which females exhibit no preferences for male size or coloration. We tested whether these traits affect individual reproductive success inE. spectabilewhen multiple males are allowed to freely compete for a female. The quality and quantity of male coloration were associated with greater success in maintaining access to the female and in spawning as the primary male (first male to participate). On the other hand, sneaking behavior showed little correlation with coloration. Male breeding coloration inE. spectabilemay therefore demonstrate how intrasexual competition can be a predominant factor underlying the evolution of male ornaments.
