Title: The Gendered Impact of Depression on Undergraduate Students’ Research Gains: Can More Competent Mentors Help?
For women and transgender/gender nonconforming students, experiencing depression reduced their personal and skills gains from undergraduate research, but higher quality mentoring attenuated that negative effect for personal gains. For men, depression was not significantly associated with their gains from undergraduate research.  more » « less

  1. Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) are an effective way to integrate research into an undergraduate science curriculum and extend research experiences to a large, diverse group of early-career students. We developed a biology CURE at the University of Miami (UM) called the UM Authentic Research Laboratories (UMARL), in which groups of first-year students investigated novel questions and conducted projects of their own design related to the research themes of the faculty instructors. Herein, we describe the implementation and student outcomes of this long-running CURE. Using a national survey of student learning through research experiences in courses, we found that UMARL led to high student self-reported learning gains in research skills such as data analysis and science communication, as well as personal development skills such as self-confidence and self-efficacy. Our analysis of academic outcomes revealed that the odds of students who took UMARL engaging in individual research, graduating with a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) within 4 years, and graduating with honors were 1.5–1.7 times greater than the odds for a matched group of students from UM’s traditional biology labs. The authenticity of UMARL may have fostered students’ confidence that they can do real research, reinforcing their persistence in STEM.

  2. Research has shown that mentorship provided to undergraduate researchers affects the extent of research outcomes. Although a large body of literature focuses on the faculty–undergraduate dyad mentorship structure, little is known about mentoring triads (i.e., interaction among undergraduate students, faculty, and graduate students or postdoctoral associates) or the support provided to early-year undergraduate researchers. Mentors provide various types of support (e.g., intellectual, personal, emotional, and professional support) to undergraduate researchers to increase their engagement in a discipline. This qualitative exploratory study aims to investigate undergraduate researchers’ perspectives on mentoring structures and the support provided to them in their first and sophomore years. The majority of participants described the mentorship they received as having a triad structure, indicating interaction with both faculty and postgraduates. Participants also reported receiving different types of support from faculty and postgraduates depending on their mentoring structures and the amount of research experience they gained. Given the potential benefits to undergraduate researchers, undergraduate research programs should be designed to provide clear roles, responsibilities, and expectations to maximize the support provided to undergraduate students.

  3. Biguanides are organonitrogen compounds prevalent in wastewater due to their widespread use in agricultural additives, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. Metformin (1,2-N-dimethylbiguanide) is the most prescribed type II diabetes drug in the world and has been detected at significant levels in coastal waters and rivers worldwide. While recent studies reported the isolation of metformin-degrading bacteria and uncovered its catabolic pathway, the biodegradation of other biguanides and the connections between their metabolic pathways remain unexplored. This study describes establishing a collaborative undergraduate research program amongst three universities that focused on investigating the biodegradation of biguanides using microbes from soils and wastewater. As part of a course undergraduate research experience (CURE) and a summer research program, students prepared microbial enrichment cultures using soils from diverse locations and activated sludge samples from wastewater treatment facilities. The samples were grown on a minimal medium with biguanides including metformin, 1-N-methylbiguanide, and cyanoguanidine as the sole nitrogen sources for growth. Biodegradation and microbial growth were monitored by HPLC analyses, colorimetric assays, and optical density, respectively. Microbial consortia capable of degrading multiple biguanides were obtained and further characterized by genome sequencing and bioinformatics analyses. Bacterial strains that metabolized biguanides independently of microbial consortia were isolated and examined for the presence of candidate genes and enzymes potentially involved in biguanide metabolism. Guanylurea hydrolase, an enzyme commonly found in several biguanide catabolic pathways, was selected for further mutagenesis and biochemical analyses. The results of these studies suggest that the microbial catabolism of biguanide compounds shares common guanylurea and guanidine intermediates as well as the enzymes involved in their metabolism. The CURE and summer research activities were implemented over two years in introductory as well as intermediate courses at the participating universities. Preliminary assessment results show students' learning gains in collaboration skills, data interpretation, and the application of microbial enzymes to enhance wastewater treatment processes.

Undergraduate science students who volunteer within a research laboratory group, or participate in funded research opportunities, in general are those who have the opportunity to engage in authentic research. In this article, we report the findings from two different iterations of a semester-long collaboration between a biology faculty member and a science education faculty member at a major research institution in the Southeastern United States. Specifically, the faculty members designed an ecology laboratory course for upper-level undergraduate students (primarily biology majors) where they would engage in an original and highly authentic ecological research project. The goal of this course was to have students explicitly learn about the nature of science (NOS), and authentic scientific practices such as inquiry and experimentation in the context of their own research. In the second year of the course, the global COVID-19 pandemic forced us to modify our approach to accomplish the same goals, but now in a remote and online format. Using questionnaires, concept inventories, and semi-structured interviews, the impact of the course on students’ understandings of NOS, inquiry, and experimentation, in addition to their perspectives on the experience within the course compared to prior laboratory coursework, was investigated. We found that students showed modest gains in each of the aforementioned desirable outcomes. These gains were generally comparable in both face-to-face and remote course settings. Additionally, students shared with us their preference for authentic laboratory work as compared with the typical laboratory work with its given research question and step-by-step instructions. Our research demonstrates what is possible in both face-to-face and remote undergraduate laboratory courses in biology and the positive impact that was observed in our students. We hope it serves as a model for other scientists and science educators as they collaborate to design authentic research-based coursework for undergraduate biology students.

Contribution: This study uncovered specific benefits, challenges, and facilitators to participating in undergraduate research for physically disabled students (PDSs) taken directly from students themselves. Background: Disabled students (DSs) earn bachelor's degrees and gain employment in STEM careers at rates lower than their peers. The paradigm shift in undergraduate STEM education from lecture-based to inquiry-based learning is an opportunity to explore new options for including DSs. Little is known about designing inquiry-based learning settings for DSs. Research Question: This article seeks to increase the understanding of how to support PDSs in inquiry-based settings. Specifically, the authors documented the experiences of PDS in a summer undergraduate research program to uncover: 1) benefits they receive from participating; 2) specific challenges these students face; and 3) novel ways to facilitate participation. Methodology: The authors conducted semistructured interviews of five undergraduate PDS, who participated in a summer research program. The paper reports representative student responses across themes related to benefits, challenges, and facilitators of success in the program. Findings: The students enjoyed many benefits typically gained from undergraduate research, most notably career clarification. Additionally, the students experienced personal growth, including improved self-advocacy, increased confidence in their independence, and greater understanding of limitations. The main facilitator was the positive attitudes of research mentors. A principal challenge was the lack of knowledge about disability in peers without disabilities who participated in the program.
