Abstract We present analysis of one of the most extreme quasar outflows found to date in our survey of extremely high-velocity outflows (EHVOs). J164653.72+243942.2 (zem ∼ 3.04) shows variable Civλλ1548,1551 absorption at speeds larger than 0.1c, accompanied by Siiv, Nv,and Lyα, and disappearing absorption at lower speeds. We perform absorption measurements using the apparent optical depth method and SimBAL. We find the absorption to be very broad (Δv ∼ 35,100 km s−1in the first epoch and 13,000 km s−1in the second one) and fast (vmax ∼ –50,200 km s−1and −49,000 km s−1, respectively). We measure large column densities ( 21.6 (cm−2)) and are able to place distance estimates for the EHVO (5 ≲ R ≲ 28 pc) and the lower-velocity outflow (7 ≲ R ≲ 540 pc). We estimate a mass outflow rate for the EHVO to be and a kinetic luminosity of in both epochs. The lower-velocity component has a mass outflow rate and a kinetic luminosity of . We find that J164653.72+243942.2 is not an outlier among EHVO quasars in regard to its physical properties. While its column density is lower than typical BAL values, its higher outflow velocities drive most of the mass outflow rate and kinetic luminosity. These results emphasize the crucial role of EHVOs in powering quasar feedback, and failing to account for these outflows likely leads to underestimating the feedback impact on galaxies.

Search for Neutrino Doublets and Triplets Using 11.4 yr of IceCube Data
Abstract We report a search for high-energy astrophysical neutrino multiplets, detections of multiple neutrino clusters in the same direction within 30 days, based on an analysis of 11.4 yr of IceCube data. A new search method optimized for transient neutrino emission with a monthly timescale is employed, providing a higher sensitivity to neutrino fluxes. This result is sensitive to neutrino transient emission, reaching per-flavor flux of approximately from the Northern Sky in the energy rangeE ≳ 50 TeV. The number of doublets and triplets identified in this search is compatible with the atmospheric background hypothesis, which leads us to set limits on the nature of neutrino transient sources with emission timescales of one month.

Abstract We report results from a systematic wide-area search for faint dwarf galaxies at heliocentric distances from 0.3 to 2 Mpc using the full 6 yr of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Unlike previous searches over the DES data, this search specifically targeted a field population of faint galaxies located beyond the Milky Way virial radius. We derive our detection efficiency for faint, resolved dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume with a set of synthetic galaxies and expect our search to be complete toMV∼ (−7, −10) mag for galaxies atD= (0.3, 2.0) Mpc. We find no new field dwarfs in the DES footprint, but we report the discovery of one high-significance candidate dwarf galaxy at a distance of , a potential satellite of the Local Volume galaxy NGC 55, separated by 47′ (physical separation as small as 30 kpc). We estimate this dwarf galaxy to have an absoluteV-band magnitude of and an azimuthally averaged physical half-light radius of , making this one of the lowest surface brightness galaxies ever found with . This is the largest, most diffuse galaxy known at this luminosity, suggesting possible tidal interactions with its host.more » « less

Abstract We study the luminosity function (LF) and clustering properties of 888 Hαemitters (HAEs) at 3.75 < z < 6 in the GOODS-N field. The sample, built from JWST CONGRESS and FRESCO NIRCam grism surveys using a novel redshift assignment algorithm, spans ∼62 arcmin2and reachesLHα ∼ 1041.2erg s−1. We identify two prominent filamentary protoclusters atz ≈ 4.41 andz ≈ 5.19, hosting 98 and 144 HAEs, respectively. The observed HαLFs show similar shallow faint-end slopes for both protocluster and field galaxies at 3.75 < z < 5, and for the protocluster at 5 < z < 6 (α ≈ −1.2 to −1.3). In contrast, the field LF at 5 < z < 6 has a much steeper slope ( ), suggesting that protocluster galaxies atz > 5 are more evolved, resembling the populations at 3.75 < z < 5. The observed star formation rate density from Hαintegrated down to 0.45M⊙yr−1, is at 3.75 < z < 5 and at 5 < z < 6, with protoclusters contributing about 25% and 55%, respectively. This implies a large fraction of star formation atz> 4 occurs in protoclusters. For the first time, we conduct the star formation-rate-limited three-dimensional clustering analysis atz > 4. We find that the filamentary geometry of protoclusters flattens the power-law shape of the HAE autocorrelation functions, with slopes much shallower than the typically assumed value. The autocorrelation function of field HAEs has a correlation length of atz ≈ 4−5 and atz ≈ 5−6. Comparing the observed correlation functions with the UniverseMachinesimulation, we infer the dark matter (sub-)halo masses of HAEs to be atz ≈ 4−6, with a scatter of 0.4 dex.more » « less

Abstract We present a systematic study of the environments of 25 luminous quasars atz > 6.5 from the ASPIRE program. Using JWST/NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopy data, we identified 487 galaxies at 5.3 ≲ z ≲ 7.0 exhibiting [Oiii] emission. Among these, 122 [Oiii] emitters lie within ∣Δvlos∣ < 1000 km s−1of the quasars, corresponding to a ∼9.4-fold enhancement relative to the average galaxy density at other redshifts. Furthermore, we identified 16 [Cii]-emitting galaxies at the quasar redshifts from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) mosaic observations. A cross-correlation function analysis between quasars and [Oiii]+[Cii] emitters yields a cross-correlation length of and an autocorrelation of , indicating thatz ∼ 7 quasars reside in dark matter halos with and have a quasar lifetime of . Notably, the number of [Oiii]-emitting galaxies at quasar redshifts varies significantly from field to field, ranging from 0 to 20, highlighting a diverse quasar environment. Remarkably, seven quasars trace significant galaxy overdensities (i.e., protoclusters), withδgal > 5 within a volume ofV ∼ 500 cMpc3. We also find that ∣Δvlos∣ increases rapidly toward smaller galaxy–quasar separations in protocluster fields, consistent with galaxy kinematics around extremely massive halos in cosmological simulations. By combining JWST and ALMA data, we reveal the complex and diverse environments of these early quasars, providing robust evidence that the earliest luminous quasars are effective tracers of galaxy overdensities, albeit with substantial field-to-field variation.more » « less

Abstract We present thez≈ 6 type-1 quasar luminosity function (QLF), based on the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) quasar survey. The PS1 sample includes 125 quasars atz≈ 5.7–6.2, with −28 ≲M1450≲ −25. With the addition of 48 fainter quasars from the SHELLQs survey, we evaluate thez≈ 6 QLF over −28 ≲M1450≲ −22. Adopting a double power law with an exponential evolution of the quasar density (Φ(z) ∝ 10k(z−6);k= −0.7), we use a maximum likelihood method to model our data. We find a break magnitude of , a faint-end slope of , and a steep bright-end slope of . Based on our new QLF model, we determine the quasar comoving spatial density atz≈ 6 to be . In comparison with the literature, we find the quasar density to evolve with a constant value ofk≈ −0.7, fromz≈ 7 toz≈ 4. Additionally, we derive an ionizing emissivity of , based on the QLF measurement. Given standard assumptions, and the recent measurement of the mean free path by Becker et al. atz≈ 6, we calculate an Hiphotoionizing rate of ΓH I(z= 6) ≈ 6 × 10−16s−1, strongly disfavoring a dominant role of quasars in hydrogen reionization.more » « less
