A Co(II) complex, (PPHP)CoI2, was synthesized and evaluated as a precatalyst for the hydrogenation of terminal alkenes under mild conditions (1 atm H2, ambient temperature) using KBEt3H as an activator. This catalytic system was found to be active for terminal alkene substrates, including 1,1′-disubstituted alkenes, and to exhibit modest air and moisture stability. A preliminary investigation into substrate scope and functional group tolerance was performed. Upon the completion of catalytic reactions, the sole metal complex observed was identified as the dimeric species [(PPP)CoH]2 suggesting that the catalytically active species may be a cobalt hydride monomer.

An I2-catalyzed, Visible-Light Photoredox-Mediated Radical Conversion of a-Nitrocarbonyls to Nitrile Oxides. Catalytic Access to Isoxazolines and Isooxazoles from Alkenes and Alkynes
A visible light-mediated, I2-catalyzed intermolecular transformation of alkenes, conjugated dienes, styrenes and alkynes to isooxazoline and isoxazole motifs with a-nitrocarbonyls and analogs is reported. The reaction is also applicable to 1,1-disubstituted terminal, 1,2-disubstituted internal and trisubstituted alkenes, and tolerates a range of functional groups including epoxides, heterocycles, phosphates, free alcohols and thiocyanates. Mechanistic studies reveal that a-nitrocarbonyls are first converted to -carbonyl radicals followed by their conversion to acyl nitrile oxides, which subsequently undergo [3 + 2] dipolar cycloaddition reactions with the unsaturated molecules.

An operationally simple method for generating enantioenriched 2-oxazolidinones from N-Boc amines and monoor trans-disubstituted alkenes via chiral organoselenium catalysis is described. Critical to the success of the transformation was the inclusion of triisopropylsilyl chloride (TIPSCl), likely because it sequestered fluoride generated by the oxidant (N-fluorocollidinium tetrafluoroborate) throughout the reaction and suppressed side reactivity. The scope of both the amine and alkene substrates was explored, generating a variety of 2-oxazolidinones in modest to high yields with high enantioselectivitiesmore » « less

Abstract A unified approach to mono- and disubstituted N–H indoles is described by means of oxidative cyclization of 2-alkenyl anilines, which are prepared by cross-coupling of the corresponding o-bromoanilines. This procedure is operationally expedient and tolerant of common functional groups to allow regiospecific installation of the alkyl and aryl substituents.more » « less

The aza Paternò–Büchi reaction is a [2+2]-cycloaddition reaction between imines and alkenes that produces azetidines, four-membered nitrogen-containing heterocycles. Currently, successful examples rely primarily on either intramolecular variants or cyclic imine equivalents. To unlock the full synthetic potential of aza Paternò–Büchi reactions, it is essential to extend the reaction to acyclic imine equivalents. Here, we report that matching of the frontier molecular orbital energies of alkenes with those of acyclic oximes enables visible light–mediated aza Paternò–Büchi reactions through triplet energy transfer catalysis. The utility of this reaction is further showcased in the synthesis ofepi-penaresidin B. Density functional theory computations reveal that a competition between the desired [2+2]-cycloaddition and alkene dimerization determines the success of the reaction. Frontier orbital energy matching between the reactive components lowers transition-state energy (ΔGǂ) values and ultimately promotes reactivity.more » « less

Generation of Diazomethyl Radicals by Hydrogen Atom Abstraction and Their Cycloaddition with AlkenesAbstract A general catalytic methodology for the synthesis of pyrazolines from α‐diazo compounds and conjugated alkenes is reported. The direct hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process of α‐diazo compounds promoted by thetert‐butylperoxy radical generates electrophilic diazomethyl radicals, thereby reversing the reactivity of the carbon atom attached with the diazo group. The regiocontrolled addition of diazomethyl radicals to carbon‐carbon double bonds followed by intramolecular ring closure on the terminal diazo nitrogen and tautomerization affords a diverse set of pyrazolines in good yields with excellent regioselectivity. This strategy overcomes the limitations of electron‐deficient alkenes in traditional dipolar [3+2]‐cycloaddition of α‐diazo compounds with alkenes. Furthermore, the straightforward formation of the diazomethyl radicals provides umpolung reactivity, thus opening new opportunities for the versatile transformations of diazo compounds.more » « less
