When a consumer is finished using an electronic device (End-of- First-Use), they might recycle, resell, donate/give away, trade-in or throw it in the trash. There are security threats if a hostile party obtains the device and extracts data. Data wiping at End- of-First-Use is thus an important security behavior, one that has received scant analytical attention. To explore consumer behavior and reasoning behind data wiping practices, we undertake a survey of the U.S. population. One key result is that 31% of the population did not wipe data when dispositioning a device. When asked why not, 44% replied that they did not find data wiping important or that it did not occur to them. 33% replied the device was broken and data could not be wiped, 12% reported difficulty in wiping and 11% could not find a way to wipe. The 44% who thought data wiping was not important showed lower awareness of the security threat, 23% had heard that data can be recovered from discarded devices, versus 44% for the general population. The most prevalent device types for which data wiping was reported as unimportant are smart TVs, kitchen appliances, streaming, and gaming devices, suggesting that consumers may not be aware that private information is being stored on these devices. To inform future interventions that aim to raise awareness, we queried respondents where they obtained security knowledge. 47% replied that they learned about security threats from a single venue; social media was this single venue 43% of the time. Segmenting Consumer Knowledge and Attitudes: Behavioral Insights for End-of-First-Use Electronics
The goal of this study is to find patterns in how consumers disposition electronic devices at End-of-First-Use, i.e. store, recycle, resell, trade in, donate/give or and throw in the trash. K-means clustering was used on survey data from 3,747 U.S. respondents across 10 device categories to divide the population into three clusters of consumers based on stated attitudes and knowledge of data privacy, environmental benefits, convenience and other aspects of End-of-First-Use options. We then measure the reported intended disposition of devices for each cluster and compare with the general population. Cluster 1 has higher data security concerns when recycling, reselling or donating, and less knowledge and trust in End-of-First-Use options overall. The intended behavior of cluster 1 shows higher than average uncertainty in what to do at End-of-First-Use and more intent to store (lower values for other options - recycling, reselling and donating). Cluster 2 shows higher knowledge and trust in recycling, reselling, and donation, and slightly higher than average concern about data security of these options. The intended behavior of cluster 2 shows higher intent to resell, trade-in or donate, and lower levels of being uncertain of what to do and of storing. Cluster 3 expresses much less concern about data security, and lower utility of a stored device. Their intended behavior shows less storage and higher levels of other End-of- First-Use" options. While cluster analysis does not yield causal connections, the groups show consistent trends in stated knowledge and attitudes towards different End-of-First-Use options and corresponding planned behaviors. These results indicate there are subgroups of the general population with similar reported attitudes, knowledge and behaviors. The three subgroups do not have distinct demographic characteristics, i.e. knowledge and attitudes regarding disposition of electronics does not depend strongly on age, education level, income and similar factors. Understanding segmentation is useful to investigate more effective interventions to influence behavior for better sustainability outcomes.

Opening up data produced by the Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile devices for public utilization can maximize their economic value. Challenges remain in the trustworthiness of the data sources and the security of the trading process, particularly when there is no trust between the data providers and consumers. In this paper, we propose DEXO, a decentralized data exchange mechanism that facilitates secure and fair data exchange between data consumers and distributed IoT/mobile data providers at scale, allowing the consumer to verify the data generation process and the providers to be compensated for providing authentic data, with correctness guarantees from the exchange platform. To realize this, DEXO extends the decentralized oracle network model that has been successful in the blockchain applications domain to incorporate novel hardware-cryptographic co-design that harmonizes trusted execution environment, secret sharing, and smart contract-assisted fair exchange. For the first time, DEXO ensures end-to-end data confidentiality, source verifiability, and fairness of the exchange process with strong resilience against participant collusion. We implemented a prototype of the DEXO system to demonstrate feasibility. The evaluation shows a moderate deployment cost and significantly improved blockchain operation efficiency compared to a popular data exchange mechanism.more » « less

The U.S. Government is developing a package label to help consumers access reliable security and privacy information about Internet of Things (IoT) devices when making purchase decisions. The label will include the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a QR code to scan for more details, and potentially additional information. To examine how label information complexity and educational interventions affect comprehension of security and privacy attributes and label QR code use, we conducted an online survey with 518 IoT purchasers. We examined participants’ comprehension and preferences for three labels of varying complexities, with and without an educational intervention. Participants favored and correctly utilized the two higher-complexity labels, showing a special interest in the privacy-relevant content. Furthermore, while the educational intervention improved understanding of the QR code’s purpose, it had a modest effect on QR scanning behavior. We highlight clear design and policy directions for creating and deploying IoT security and privacy labels.more » « less

null (Ed.)Strategic response options to the COVID-19 pandemic have been greatly influenced by predictive epidemiological models. Effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs; such as mask wearing) unfortunately are based on an abundance of very large uncertainties around the extent to which the population adopts risk reducing behaviors. The effects of NPIs appear to have large heterogeneity across regions, subgroups, and individual mindsets and capabilities. We hypothesize that these uncertainties can be improved with higher-fidelity computational modeling of the social-psychological reactions of individuals, groups, and populations. We build up the ACT-R theory and Instance-Based Learning Theory to formulate psychologically valid agents and develop a framework that integrates multi-level cognitive and social simulation with information networks analysis, and epidemiological predictions. We present initial results from analyses of beliefs and sentiments about COVID-19 NPIs induced from online social media that can provide inputs to seed and validate cognitive agents. We present illustrations of cognitive model hypotheses about the dynamics of behavior change in response to intentions, attitudes, messaging, and source credibility. Follert, Florian (Ed.)Using non-pecuniary interventions to motivate pro-environmental behavior appeals to program administrators seeking cost-effective ways to increase adoption of environmental practices. However, all good-intended interventions should not be expected to be effective and reporting when interventions fail is as important as documenting their successes. We used a framed field experiment with 308 adults from the Mid-Atlantic in the United States to test the effectiveness of an expert testimonial in encouraging adoption of native plants in residential settings. Though studies have found testimonials to be effective in other contexts, we find that the video testimonial had no effect on residents’ willingness to pay for native plants. Our analysis also shows that consumers who are younger, have higher incomes, and use other environmentally friendly practices on their lawns are more likely than other consumers to purchase native plants.more » « less
