Title: J/ψ-hadron correlations at midrapidity in pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV
Abstract We report on the measurement of inclusive, non-prompt, and prompt J/ψ-hadron correlations by the ALICE Collaboration at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The correlations are studied at midrapidity (|y| <0.9) in the transverse momentum rangespT<40 GeV/cfor the J/ψand 0.15< pT<10 GeV/cand |η|<0.9 for the associated hadrons. The measurement is based on minimum bias and high multiplicity data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities ofLint= 34 nb−1andLint= 6.9 pb−1, respectively. In addition, two more data samples are employed, requiring, on top of the minimum bias condition, a threshold on the tower energy ofE= 4 and 9 GeV in the ALICE electromagnetic calorimeters, which correspond to integrated luminosities ofLint= 0.9 pb−1andLint= 8.4 pb−1, respectively. The azimuthally integrated near and away side yields of associated charged hadrons per J/ψtrigger are presented as a function of the J/ψand associated hadron transverse momentum. The measurements are discussed in comparison to PYTHIA calculations.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The transverse momentum (pT) and centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factorRAAof prompt and non-prompt J/ψ, the latter originating from the weak decays of beauty hadrons, have been measured by the ALICE collaboration in Pb–Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV. The measurements are carried out through the e+e−decay channel at midrapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the transverse momentum region 1.5 <pT< 10 GeV/c. Both prompt and non-prompt J/ψmeasurements indicate a significant suppression forpT> 5 GeV/c, which becomes stronger with increasing collision centrality. The results are consistent with similar LHC measurements in the overlappingpTintervals, and cover the kinematic region down topT= 1.5 GeV/cat midrapidity, not accessible by other LHC experiments. The suppression of prompt J/ψin central and semicentral collisions exhibits a decreasing trend towards lower transverse momentum, described within uncertainties by models implementing J/ψproduction from recombination of c and$$ \overline{\textrm{c}} $$ c¯ quarks produced independently in different partonic scatterings. At high transverse momentum, transport models including quarkonium dissociation are able to describe the suppression for prompt J/ψ. For non-prompt J/ψ, the suppression predicted by models including both collisional and radiative processes for the computation of the beauty-quark energy loss inside the quark-gluon plasma is consistent with measurements within uncertainties.

  2. Abstract The production of inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/ψwas studied for the first time at midrapidity (−1.37< ycms<0.43) in p-Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 8.16 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive J/ψmesons were reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel in the transverse momentum (pT) interval 0< pT<14 GeV/cand the prompt and non-prompt contributions were separated on a statistical basis forpT>2 GeV/c. The study of the J/ψmesons in the dielectron channel used for the first time in ALICE online single-electron triggers from the Transition Radiation Detector, providing a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 689 ± 13μb−1. The proton-proton reference cross section for inclusive J/ψwas obtained based on interpolations of measured data at different centre-of-mass energies and a universal function describing thepT-differential J/ψproduction cross sections. ThepT-differential nuclear modification factorsRpPbof inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ψare consistent with unity and described by theoretical models implementing only nuclear shadowing.

  3. A bstract A measurement of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ ψ production in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV is presented. The inclusive J/ ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at midrapidity down to a transverse momentum p T = 0. The inclusive J/ ψ nuclear modification factor R pPb is calculated by comparing the new results in p-Pb collisions to a recently measured proton-proton reference at the same centre-of-mass energy. Non-prompt J/ ψ mesons, which originate from the decay of beauty hadrons, are separated from promptly produced J/ ψ on a statistical basis for p T larger than 1.0 GeV/ c . These results are based on the data sample collected by the ALICE detector during the 2016 LHC p-Pb run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity $$ \mathcal{L} $$ L int = 292 ± 11 μ b − 1 , which is six times larger than the previous publications. The total uncertainty on the p T -integrated inclusive J/ ψ and non-prompt J/ ψ cross section are reduced by a factor 1.7 and 2.2, respectively. The measured cross sections and R pPb are compared with theoretical models that include various combinations of cold nuclear matter effects. From the non-prompt J/ ψ production cross section, the $$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$ b b ¯ production cross section at midrapidity, $$ {\mathrm{d}\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ d σ b b ¯ / d y , and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, $$ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ σ b b ¯ , are derived.

  5. Abstract The second-order (v2) and third-order (v3) Fourier coefficients describing the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt (from b-hadron decays) J/ψ, as well as prompt ψ(2S) mesons are measured in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV. The analysis uses a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.61 nb−1recorded with the CMS detector. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. Thev2andv3coefficients are extracted using the scalar product method and studied as functions of meson transverse momentum and collision centrality. The measuredv2values for prompt J/ψ mesons are found to be larger than those for nonprompt J/ψ mesons. The prompt J/ψv2values at highpTare found to be underpredicted by a model incorporating only parton energy loss effects in a quark-gluon plasma medium. Prompt and nonprompt J/ψ mesonv3and prompt ψ(2S)v2andv3values are also reported for the first time, providing new information about heavy quark interactions in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.
