A bstract v 2) and third-order (v 3) Fourier coefficients describing the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt (from b-hadron decays) J/ ψ, as well as prompt ψ(2S) mesons are measured in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of = 5$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ . 02 TeV. The analysis uses a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.61 nb− 1recorded with the CMS detector. The J/ ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. Thev 2andv 3coefficients are extracted using the scalar product method and studied as functions of meson transverse momentum and collision centrality. The measuredv 2values for prompt J/ ψ mesons are found to be larger than those for nonprompt J/ ψ mesons. The prompt J/ ψv 2values at highp Tare found to be underpredicted by a model incorporating only parton energy loss effects in a quark-gluon plasma medium. Prompt and nonprompt J/ ψ mesonv 3and prompt ψ(2S)v 2andv 3values are also reported for the first time, providing new information about heavy quark interactions in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions. -
A bstract Measurements of the production of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in pp collisions at
= 13 TeV at midrapidity with the ALICE detector are presented down to a transverse momentum ($$ \sqrt{s} $$ p T) of 0.2 GeV/c and up top T= 35 GeV/c , which is the largest momentum range probed for inclusive electron measurements in ALICE. In p-Pb collisions, the production cross section and the nuclear modification factor of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays are measured in thep Trange 0. 5< p T< 26 GeV/c at = 8$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ . 16 TeV. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with unity within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. In both collision systems, first measurements of the yields of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in different multiplicity intervals normalised to the multiplicity-integrated yield (self-normalised yield) at midrapidity are reported as a function of the self-normalised charged-particle multiplicity estimated at midrapidity. The self-normalised yields in pp and p-Pb collisions grow faster than linear with the self-normalised multiplicity. A strongp Tdependence is observed in pp collisions, where the yield of high-p Telectrons increases faster as a function of multiplicity than the one of low-p Telectrons. The measurement in p-Pb collisions shows nop Tdependence within uncertainties. The self-normalised yields in pp and p-Pb collisions are compared with measurements of other heavy-flavour, light-flavour, and strange particles, and with Monte Carlo simulations. -
A bstract The production of strange hadrons (
, Λ, Ξ$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ ± , and Ω± ), baryon-to-meson ratios (Λ/ , Ξ$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ / , and Ω$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ / ), and baryon-to-baryon ratios (Ξ$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ / Λ, Ω/ Λ, and Ω/ Ξ) associated with jets and the underlying event were measured as a function of transverse momentum (p T) in pp collisions at = 13 TeV and p Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 5$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ . 02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive production of the same particle species and the corresponding ratios are also reported. The production of multi-strange hadrons, Ξ± and Ω± , and their associated particle ratios in jets and in the underlying event are measured for the first time. In both pp and p–Pb collisions, the baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-baryon yield ratios measured in jets differ from the inclusive particle production for low and intermediate hadronp T(0.6–6 GeV/c ). Ratios measured in the underlying event are in turn similar to those measured for inclusive particle production. In pp collisions, the particle production in jets is compared with Pythia 8 predictions with three colour-reconnection implementation modes. None of them fully reproduces the data in the measured hadronp Tregion. The maximum deviation is observed for Ξ± and Ω± which reaches a factor of about six. The event multiplicity dependence is further investigated in p−Pb collisions. In contrast to what is observed in the underlying event, there is no significant event-multiplicity dependence for particle production in jets. The presented measurements provide novel constraints on hadronisation and its Monte Carlo description. In particular, they demonstrate that the fragmentation of jets alone is insufficient to describe the strange and multi-strange particle production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies. -
A bstract A measurement of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ ψ production in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV is presented. The inclusive J/ ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at midrapidity down to a transverse momentum p T = 0. The inclusive J/ ψ nuclear modification factor R pPb is calculated by comparing the new results in p-Pb collisions to a recently measured proton-proton reference at the same centre-of-mass energy. Non-prompt J/ ψ mesons, which originate from the decay of beauty hadrons, are separated from promptly produced J/ ψ on a statistical basis for p T larger than 1.0 GeV/ c . These results are based on the data sample collected by the ALICE detector during the 2016 LHC p-Pb run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity $$ \mathcal{L} $$ L int = 292 ± 11 μ b − 1 , which is six times larger than the previous publications. The total uncertainty on the p T -integrated inclusive J/ ψ and non-prompt J/ ψ cross section are reduced by a factor 1.7 and 2.2, respectively. The measured cross sections and R pPb are compared with theoretical models that include various combinations of cold nuclear matter effects. From the non-prompt J/ ψ production cross section, the $$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$ b b ¯ production cross section at midrapidity, $$ {\mathrm{d}\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ d σ b b ¯ / d y , and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, $$ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ σ b b ¯ , are derived.more » « less

A bstract The collective behavior of
and$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ strange hadrons is studied by measuring the elliptic azimuthal anisotropy ($$ \Lambda /\overline{\Lambda} $$ v 2) using the scalar-product and multiparticle correlation methods. Proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy = 8$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ . 16 TeV and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at = 5$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ . 02 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC are investigated. Nonflow effects in the pPb collisions are studied by using a subevent cumulant analysis and by excluding events where a jet with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV is present. The strange hadronv 2values extracted in pPb collisions via the four- and six-particle correlation method are found to be nearly identical, suggesting the collective behavior. Comparisons of the pPb and PbPb results for both strange hadrons and charged particles illustrate how event-by-event flow fluctuations depend on the system size.
