Title: Accuracy evaluation of primary frequency standard NIST-F4
Abstract This work describes the apparatus for NIST-F4, an updated cesium atomic fountain at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and presents an accuracy evaluation of the fountain as a primary frequency standard. The fountain uses optical molasses to laser cool a cloud of cesium atoms and launch it vertically in a fountain geometry. In high-density mode, the fractional frequency stability of NIST-F4 is σy(τ)=1.5×10−13/τ , whereτis the measurement time in seconds. The short-term stability is limited by quantum projection noise and by phase noise from the local oscillator, an oven-controlled crystal oscillator operating at 5 MHz. Systematic frequency shifts and their uncertainties have been evaluated, resulting in a systematic (type B) fractional frequency uncertainty σB =2.2×10−16 .  more » « less

  1. Abstract The production of a pair of τ leptons via photon–photon fusion, γγ→ττ , is observed for the first time in proton–proton collisions, with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. This observation is based on a data set recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Events with a pair of τ leptons produced via photon–photon fusion are selected by requiring them to be back-to-back in the azimuthal direction and to have a minimum number of charged hadrons associated with their production vertex. The τ leptons are reconstructed in their leptonic and hadronic decay modes. The measured fiducial cross section of γγ→ττ is σobsfid= 12.4−3.1+3.8 fb . Constraints are set on the contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment ( aτ ) and electric dipole moments ( dτ ) of the τ lepton originating from potential effects of new physics on the γττ vertex: aτ = 0.0009−0.0031+0.0032 and | dτ |<2.9×10−17ecm (95% confidence level), consistent with the standard model.

  2. Abstract Polyatomic molecules have been identified as sensitive probes of charge-parity violating and parity violating physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). For example, many linear triatomic molecules are both laser-coolable and have parity doublets in the ground electronic X˜2Σ+(010) state arising from the bending vibration, both features that can greatly aid BSM searches. Understanding the X˜2Σ+(010) state is a crucial prerequisite to precision measurements with linear polyatomic molecules. Here, we characterize the fundamental bending vibration of 174 YbOH using high-resolution optical spectroscopy on the nominally forbidden X˜2Σ+(010) →A˜2 Π 1/2 (000) transition at 588 nm. We assign 39 transitions originating from the lowest rotational levels of the X˜2Σ+(010) state, and accurately model the state’s structure with an effective Hamiltonian using best-fit parameters. Additionally, we perform Stark and Zeeman spectroscopy on the X˜2Σ+(010) state and fit the molecule-frame dipole moment to Dmol =2.16(1) Dand the effective electrong-factor to gS=2.07(2) . Further, we use an empirical model to explain observed anomalous line intensities in terms of interference from spin–orbit and vibronic perturbations in the excited A˜2 Π 1/2 (000) state. Our work is an essential step toward searches for BSM physics in YbOH and other linear polyatomic molecules.

  3. Abstract The performance of a caesium fountain frequency reference for use in precision measurements of trapped antihydrogen in the ALPHA experiment at CERN is evaluated. A description of the fountain is provided together with a characterisation of systematic effects. The impact of the magnetic environment in the Antimatter Factory, where the fountain is installed, on the performance of the fountain is considered and shown to be insignificant. The systematic fractional frequency uncertainty of the fountain is 3.0×10−16 . The short-term frequency stability of the measured frequency from the ALPHA-HM1 maser is 1.5×10−13τ −1/2 , whereas the fountain itself shows a stability limit of 4.7×10−14τ −1/2 . We find a fractional frequency difference of (1.0 ± 2.2 (stat.) ± 6.5 (syst.)) ×10−16 in a comparison with Terrestrial Time via a GNSS Common View satellite link between January 2023 and June 2024. The fountain enables a significant increase in frequency precision in antihydrogen spectroscopic measurements, and paves the way for improved limits on matter–antimatter comparisons.

  4. Abstract A search for pseudoscalar or scalar bosons decaying to a top quark pair ( t t¯ ) in final states with one or two charged leptons is presented. The analyzed proton–proton collision data was recorded at s=13TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . The invariant mass m t t¯ of the reconstructed t t¯ system and variables sensitive to its spin and parity are used to discriminate against the standard model t t¯ background. Interference between pseudoscalar or scalar boson production and the standard model t t¯ continuum is included, leading to peak-dip structures in the m t t¯ distribution. An excess of the data above the background prediction, based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations, is observed near the kinematic t t¯ production threshold, while good agreement is found for high m t t¯ . The data are consistent with the background prediction if the contribution from a simplified model of a color-singlet 1 S0[1] t t¯ quasi-bound state η t , inspired by nonrelativistic QCD, is added. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the coupling between the pseudoscalar or scalar bosons and the top quark for boson masses in the range 365–1000 GeV, relative widths between 0.5% and 25%, and two background scenarios with or without η t contribution.

  5. Abstract A steady-state, semi-analytical model of energetic particle acceleration in radio-jet shear flows due to cosmic-ray viscosity obtained by Webb et al. is generalized to take into account more general cosmic-ray boundary spectra. This involves solving a mixed Dirichlet–Von Neumann boundary value problem at the edge of the jet. The energetic particle distribution functionf0(r,p) at cylindrical radiusrfrom the jet axis (assumed to lie along thez-axis) is given by convolving the particle momentum spectrum f0 (∞,p′) with the Green’s function G(r,p;p′) , which describes the monoenergetic spectrum solution in which f0 →δ(p−p′) asr→ ∞ . Previous work by Webb et al. studied only the Green’s function solution for G(r,p;p′) . In this paper, we explore for the first time, solutions for more general and realistic forms for f0 (∞,p′) . The flow velocityu=u(r)ezis along the axis of the jet (thez-axis).uis independent ofz, andu(r) is a monotonic decreasing function ofr. The scattering time τ(r,p)= τ0 (p/ p0 )α in the shear flow region 0 <r<r2, and τ(r,p)= τ0 (p/ p0 )α (r/ r2 ) s , wheres> 0 in the regionr>r2is outside the jet. Other original aspects of the analysis are (i) the use of cosmic ray flow lines in (r,p) space to clarify the particle spatial transport and momentum changes and (ii) the determination of the probability distribution ψp (r,p;p′) that particles observed at (r,p) originated fromr→ ∞ with momentum p′ . The acceleration of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays in active galactic nuclei jet sources is discussed. Leaky box models for electron acceleration are described.
