Title: Observation of WZγ production and constraints on new physics scenarios in proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV
A measurement of the WZγ triboson production cross section is presented. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13  TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . The analysis focuses on the final state with three charged leptons, ℓ±νℓ+ℓ− , where ℓ=e or μ , accompanied by an additional photon. The observed (expected) significance of the WZγ signal is 5.4 (3.8) standard deviations. The cross section is measured in a fiducial region, where events with an ℓ originating from a tau lepton decay are excluded, to be 5.48±1.11  fb , which is compatible with the prediction of 3.69±0.24  fb at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. Exclusion limits are set on anomalous quartic gauge couplings and on the production cross sections of massive axionlike particles.  more » « less

  1. Evidence of the production of two Z bosons and a photon in proton-proton collisions is reported for the first time in CMS. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . Evidence for the process pp→ZZγ→4ℓγ ( ℓ=e , μ ), with an observed (expected) significance of 3.7 (3.1) standard deviations in a fiducial region defined by pTγ >20  GeV , |ηγ|<2.4 , ΔR(ℓ,γ)>0.5 , mZ between 60 and 120 GeV, and the invariant mass of either of the two Z bosons combined with the photon ( m Zγ ) larger than 100 GeV, is reported. The measured (predicted) fiducial cross section is 60−22+27   ab ( 47.56±0.04  ab ). Additionally, the inclusive production of pp→4ℓγ is studied by removing the m Zγ requirement to include final state radiation where one Z boson decays to 2ℓγ , yielding an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.2) standard deviations and a measured (predicted) fiducial cross section of 156−35+39   ab ( 99.97±0.09  ab ).

  2. A search is presented for an extended Higgs sector with two new particles, X and ϕ , in the process X→ϕϕ→(γγ)(γγ) . Novel neural networks classify events with diphotons that are merged and determine the diphoton masses. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at s =13  TeV collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . No evidence of such resonances is seen. Upper limits are set on the production cross section for mX between 300 and 3000 GeV and mϕ/mX between 0.5% and 2.5%, representing the most sensitive search in this channel. © 2025 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2025CERN

  3. A search is presented for high-mass exclusive diphoton production via photon-photon fusion in proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV in events where both protons survive the interaction. The analysis utilizes data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 103  fb−1 collected in 2016–2018 with the central CMS detector and the CMS and TOTEM precision proton spectrometer (PPS). Events that have two photons with high transverse momenta ( pTγ >100  GeV ), back-to-back in azimuth, and with a large diphoton invariant mass ( mγγ >350  GeV ) are selected. To remove the dominant inclusive diphoton backgrounds, the kinematic properties of the protons detected in PPS are required to match those of the central diphoton system. Only events having opposite-side forward protons detected with a fractional momentum loss between 0.035 and 0.15 (0.18) for the detectors on the negative (positive) side of CMS are considered. One exclusive diphoton candidate is observed for an expected background of 1.1 events. Limits at 95% confidence level are derived for the four-photon anomalous coupling parameters |ζ1| <0.073  TeV−4 and |ζ2| <0.15  TeV−4 , using an effective field theory. Additionally, upper limits are placed on the production of axionlike particles with coupling strength to photons f−1 that varies from 0.03  TeV−1 to 1  TeV−1 over the mass range from 500 to 2000 GeV. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS and TOTEMs Collaboration2024CERN

  4. We search for the e+e−→γ χbJ ( J=0 , 1, 2) processes at center-of-mass energies s=10.653 , 10.701, 10.746, and 10.804 GeV. These data were collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider and correspond to 3.5, 1.6, 9.8, and 4.7  fb−1 of integrated luminosity, respectively. We set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the Born cross sections for e+e−→γ χbJ at each center-of-mass energy s near 10.746 GeV. The upper limits at 90% confidence level on the Born cross sections for e+e−→γ χb1 are significantly smaller than the corresponding measured values for e+e−→ω χb1 and e+e−→π+π−ϒ(2S) at s=10.746  GeV .

  5. A search for flavor violating decays of the Z boson to charged leptons is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . Each of the decays Z→eμ , Z→eτ , and Z→μτ is considered. The data are consistent with the backgrounds expected from standard model processes. For the Z→eμ channel the observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is 1.9(2.0)×10−7 , which is the most stringent direct limit to date on this process; the corresponding limits for the Z→eτ and Z→μτ channels are 13.8(11.4)×10−6 and 12.0(5.3)×10−6 , respectively. Additionally, the eμ final state is used to search for lepton flavor violating decays of Z′ resonances in the mass range from 110 to 500  GeV . No significant excess is observed above the predicted background levels.
