Title: Work-in-Progress: Voices of the Future: Student Insights on AI's Role in Shaping Learning, Integrity, and Norms in Higher Education
This work-in-progress paper explores university students’ perspectives on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, an increasingly prominent topic in the academic community. There is ongoing debate about whether faculty should teach students how to use GAI tools, restrict their usage to maintain academic integrity, or establish regulatory guidelines for sustained integration into higher education. Unfortunately, limited research exists beyond surface-level policies and educator opinions regarding GAI, and its full impact on student learning remains largely unknown. Therefore, understanding students' perceptions and how they use GAI is crucial to ensuring its effective and ethical integration into higher education. As GAI continues to disrupt traditional educational paradigms, this study seeks to explore how students perceive its influence on their learning and problem-solving. As part of a larger mixed-methods study, this work-in-progress paper presents preliminary findings from the qualitative portion using a phenomenological approach that answers the research question: How do university students perceive disruptive technologies like ChatGPT affecting their education and learning? By exploring the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools on student learning, academic integrity, individual beliefs, and community norms, this study contributes to the broader discourse on the role of emerging technologies in shaping the future of teaching and learning in education.  more » « less

  1. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has emerged in recent years as an innovative tool with promising potential for enhancing student learning across a broad spectrum of academic disciplines. GAI not only offers students personalized and adaptive learning experiences, but it is also playing an increasingly important role in various industries. As technologies evolve and society adapts to the growing AI revolution, it becomes necessary to train students of all disciplines to become proficient in using GAI. This work builds on studies that have established the effectiveness of intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning environments, and the use of virtual reality in education. This work-in-progress paper presents preliminary findings related to the relationship between university students’ area of study and the frequency at which they utilize GAI to aid their learning. Data for this study were collected using a survey distributed to students from eight different colleges at a large Western university as part of a larger ongoing project geared towards gaining insight into student perceptions and use of GAI in higher education. The goal of the overall project is to establish a foundational understanding of how disruptive technologies, like GAI, can promote learner agency. By exploring why and how students choose to engage with these technologies, the project seeks to find proactive approaches to integrate GAI technology into education, ultimately enhancing teaching and learning practices across various disciplines.

  2. This exploratory study focuses on the use of ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tool, by undergraduate engineering students in lab report writing in the major. Literature addressing the impact of ChatGPT and AI on student writing suggests that such technologies can both support and limit students' composing and learning processes. Acknowledging the history of writing with technologies and writing as technology, the development of GAI warrants attention to pedagogical and ethical implications in writing-intensive engineering classes. This pilot study investigates how the use of ChatGPT impacts students’ lab writing outcomes in terms of rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking and composing, knowledge of conventions, and writing processes. A group of undergraduate volunteers (n= 7) used ChatGPT to revise their original engineering lab reports written without using ChatGPT. A comparative study was conducted between original lab report samples and revisions by directly assessing students’ lab reports in gateway engineering lab courses. A focus group was conducted to learn their experiences and perspectives on ChatGPT in the context of engineering lab report writing. Implementing ChatGPT in the revision writing process could result in improving engineering students’ lab report quality due to students’ enhanced lab report genre understanding. At the same time, the use of ChatGPT also leads students to provide false claims, incorrect lab procedures, or extremely broad statements, which are not valued in the engineering lab report genre.

  3. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has rapidly emerged as a transformative tool in higher education, offering opportunities to enhance teaching and learning. This paper describes the design and implementation of ChatGPT-integrated curriculum activities, featuring coding learning in psychology and conceptual discussions in physics, and presents the findings of a year-long experimental study in both types of classrooms. Our findings suggest that students generally found ChatGPT easy to use and beneficial to their learning, reporting improved confidence, motivation, and engagement. However, its ability to address individual needs or replace instructors was viewed less favorably. Comparative analyses showed that coding activities in psychology led to higher levels of activity satisfaction and perceived usefulness of ChatGPT compared to the more abstract discussion activities in physics. While graduate students were more enthusiastic about using ChatGPT for skill acquisition than undergraduates, demographic factors such as gender, race, and first-generation college status showed no significant influence on such perceptions. Meanwhile, instructors’ reflections emphasize the importance of thoughtful integration, technical support, and pedagogical balance to maximize GAI’s potential while mitigating its limitations. Recommendations for integrating GAI into teaching practices and future research directions are discussed, contributing to the evolving discourse on GAI’s role in transforming modern classrooms.

    The release of ChatGPT in late 2022 prompted widespread concern about the implications of artificial intelligence for academic integrity, but thus far there has been little direct empirical evidence to inform this debate. Participants (69 high school teachers, 140 high school students, total N = 209) took an AI Identification Test in which they read pairs of essays—one written by a high school student and the other by ChatGPT—and guessed which was generated by the chatbot. Accuracy was only 70% for teachers, and it was slightly worse for students (62%). Self-reported confidence did not predict accuracy, nor did experience with ChatGPT or subject-matter expertise. Well-written student essays were especially hard to differentiate from the ChatGPT texts. In another set of measures, students reported greater optimism than their teachers did about the future role of ChatGPT in education. Students expressed disapproval of submitting ChatGPT-generated essays as one’s own but rated this and other possible academic integrity violations involving ChatGPT less negatively than teachers did. These results form an empirical basis for further work on the relationship between AI and academic integrity.

  5. Abstract As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT become more capable and accessible, their use in educational settings is likely to grow. However, the academic community lacks a comprehensive understanding of the perceptions and attitudes of students and instructors toward these new tools. In the Fall 2023 semester, we surveyed 982 students and 76 faculty at a large public university in the United States, focusing on topics such as perceived ease of use, ethical concerns, the impact of GenAI on learning, and differences in responses by role, gender, and discipline. We found that students and faculty did not differ significantly in their attitudes toward GenAI in higher education, except regarding ease of use, hedonic motivation, habit, and interest in exploring new technologies. Students and instructors also used GenAI for coursework or teaching at similar rates, although regular use of these tools was still low across both groups. Among students, we found significant differences in attitudes between males in STEM majors and females in non-STEM majors. These findings underscore the importance of considering demographic and disciplinary diversity when developing policies and practices for integrating GenAI in educational contexts, as GenAI may influence learning outcomes differently across various groups of students. This study contributes to the broader understanding of how GenAI can be leveraged in higher education while highlighting potential areas of inequality that need to be addressed as these tools become more widely used.
