Abstract Polyatomic molecules have been identified as sensitive probes of charge-parity violating and parity violating physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). For example, many linear triatomic molecules are both laser-coolable and have parity doublets in the ground electronic state arising from the bending vibration, both features that can greatly aid BSM searches. Understanding the state is a crucial prerequisite to precision measurements with linear polyatomic molecules. Here, we characterize the fundamental bending vibration of YbOH using high-resolution optical spectroscopy on the nominally forbidden transition at 588 nm. We assign 39 transitions originating from the lowest rotational levels of the state, and accurately model the state’s structure with an effective Hamiltonian using best-fit parameters. Additionally, we perform Stark and Zeeman spectroscopy on the state and fit the molecule-frame dipole moment to Dand the effective electrong-factor to . Further, we use an empirical model to explain observed anomalous line intensities in terms of interference from spin–orbit and vibronic perturbations in the excited state. Our work is an essential step toward searches for BSM physics in YbOH and other linear polyatomic molecules.

Preliminary Evidence for Lensing-induced Alignments of High-redshift Galaxies in JWST-CEERS
Abstract The majority of low-mass ( ) galaxies at high redshift (z > 1) appear elongated in projection. We use JWST-CEERS observations to explore the role of gravitational lensing in this puzzle. The typical galaxy–galaxy lensing shearγ ∼ 1% is too low to explain the predominance of elongated early galaxies with an ellipticitye ≈ 0.6. However, nonparametric quantile regression with Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (or BART) reveals hints of an excess of tangentially aligned source–lens pairs withγ > 10%. On larger scales, we also find evidence for weak-lensing shear. We rule out the null hypothesis of randomly oriented galaxies at ≳99% significance in multiple NIRCam chips, modules, and pointings. The number of such regions is small and attributable to chance, but coherent alignment patterns suggest otherwise. On the chip scale, the average complex ellipticity 〈e〉 ∼ 10% is nonnegligible and beyond the level of our point-spread function (PSF) uncertainties. The shear variance is an order of magnitude above the conventional weak-lensing regime but is more sensitive to PSF systematics, intrinsic alignments, cosmic variance, and other biases. Taking it as an upper limit, the maximum implied “cosmic shear” is only a few percent and cannot explain the elongated shapes of early galaxies. The alignments themselves may arise from lensing by a protocluster or filament atz ∼ 0.75 where we find an overabundance of massive lens galaxies. We recommend a weak-lensing search for overdensities in “blank” deep fields with the James Webb Space Telescope and the Roman Space Telescope.

Abstract We present analysis of one of the most extreme quasar outflows found to date in our survey of extremely high-velocity outflows (EHVOs). J164653.72+243942.2 (zem ∼ 3.04) shows variable Civλλ1548,1551 absorption at speeds larger than 0.1c, accompanied by Siiv, Nv,and Lyα, and disappearing absorption at lower speeds. We perform absorption measurements using the apparent optical depth method and SimBAL. We find the absorption to be very broad (Δv ∼ 35,100 km s−1in the first epoch and 13,000 km s−1in the second one) and fast (vmax ∼ –50,200 km s−1and −49,000 km s−1, respectively). We measure large column densities ( 21.6 (cm−2)) and are able to place distance estimates for the EHVO (5 ≲ R ≲ 28 pc) and the lower-velocity outflow (7 ≲ R ≲ 540 pc). We estimate a mass outflow rate for the EHVO to be and a kinetic luminosity of in both epochs. The lower-velocity component has a mass outflow rate and a kinetic luminosity of . We find that J164653.72+243942.2 is not an outlier among EHVO quasars in regard to its physical properties. While its column density is lower than typical BAL values, its higher outflow velocities drive most of the mass outflow rate and kinetic luminosity. These results emphasize the crucial role of EHVOs in powering quasar feedback, and failing to account for these outflows likely leads to underestimating the feedback impact on galaxies.more » « less

Abstract Cosmic reionization was the last major phase transition of hydrogen from neutral to highly ionized in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Current observations show that the IGM is significantly neutral atz> 7 and largely ionized byz∼ 5.5. However, most methods to measure the IGM neutral fraction are highly model dependent and are limited to when the volume-averaged neutral fraction of the IGM is either relatively low ( ) or close to unity ( ). In particular, the neutral fraction evolution of the IGM at the critical redshift range ofz= 6–7 is poorly constrained. We present new constraints on atz∼ 5.1–6.8 by analyzing deep optical spectra of 53 quasars at 5.73 <z< 7.09. We derive model-independent upper limits on the neutral hydrogen fraction based on the fraction of “dark” pixels identified in the Lyαand Lyβforests, without any assumptions on the IGM model or the intrinsic shape of the quasar continuum. They are the first model-independent constraints on the IGM neutral hydrogen fraction atz∼ 6.2–6.8 using quasar absorption measurements. Our results give upper limits of (1σ), (1σ), and (1σ). The dark pixel fractions atz> 6.1 are consistent with the redshift evolution of the neutral fraction of the IGM derived from Planck 2018.more » « less

Abstract Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, since they provide environments rich in matter and photon targets where cosmic-ray interactions may lead to the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. We searched for high-energy neutrino emission from AGN using the Swift-BAT Spectroscopic Survey catalog of hard X-ray sources and 12 yr of IceCube muon track data. First, upon performing a stacked search, no significant emission was found. Second, we searched for neutrinos from a list of 43 candidate sources and found an excess from the direction of two sources, the Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. We observed NGC 1068 at flux = TeV−1cm−2s−1normalized at 1 TeV, with a power-law spectral indexγ= 3.10 , consistent with previous IceCube results. The observation of a neutrino excess from the direction of NGC 4151 is at a posttrial significance of 2.9σ. If interpreted as an astrophysical signal, the excess observed from NGC 4151 corresponds to a flux = TeV−1cm−2s−1normalized at 1 TeV andγ= 2.83 .more » « less

Abstract A measurement of production is presented in the invariant-mass region near the pair production threshold, GeV, in final states with two charged leptons and multiple jets. The measurement is based on of proton–proton collision data collected at TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data are compared to two models of production: a baseline model including only perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) predictions for the hard process at approximate next-to-next-to leading order accuracy in the strong coupling, and an extended model that, in addition, incorporates non-relativistic QCD simulations that also include the formation of colour-singlet quasi-bound-states near the threshold. The agreement between the data and the models is quantified via a profile-likelihood fit to the reconstructed distributions, in bins of two angular observables sensitive to spin-correlations in the system. An excess of events is observed over the baseline pQCD prediction, with an observed significance over 8 standard deviations. This excess is consistent with the formation of colour-singlet and spin-singletS-wave quasi-bound states, as predicted by non-relativistic QCD, and corresponds to an observed cross-section of pb.more » « less
