Title: Material characterization and biocompatibility of polycarbonate-based polyurethane for biomedical implant applications
Left: Microscopy images of CB 7.1 (top) and CF (bottom) surfaces show hard domain patterns—CF has elongated lines, while CB 7.1 has darker circular regions. Right: Live/dead staining reveals more elongated live (green) cells on CF than on CB 7.1.  more » « less

  1. Organic photovoltaics have achieved breakthroughs in power conversion efficiency due to the superior aggregation and packing nature of non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs). Solution processing and various treatments would tend to form distinct packing motifs for state‐of‐the‐art NFAs. Herein, the solvent‐induced polymorphism for 3,9‐bis(2‐methylene‐(3‐(1,1‐dicyanomethylene)‐indanone))‐5,5,11,11‐tetrakis(4‐hexylphenyl)‐dithieno[2,3‐d:2′,3′‐d′]‐s‐indaceno[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophne) (ITIC) prepared by chloroform (CF) and chlorobenzene (CB) is revealed. The packing motif of ITIC exhibits dense π–π stacking from CF induction, which presents red‐shifted absorption and reversible high‐temperature crystallization and melting. Meanwhile, strong lamellar stacking and π–π stacking can be formed in the CB solution with unstable low‐temperature crystallization and melting. Combining in situ absorption spectra and interaction calculation, the stronger preaggregation of ITIC in the CF solution was found to be the main reason for forming a different packing motif from in the CB solution. The packing and thermodynamic features are retained in the PBDB‐T:ITIC blends, though good miscibility weakens characteristic features. Benefiting from the polymorph structure, CB‐processed devices denote more favorable performance but less thermal stability. This research indicates the significant effect of solvent induction for manipulating and optimizing the morphology of organic solar cell devices.

  2. Abstract Purification of C2H4from an C2H4/C2H6mixture is one of the most challenging separation processes, which is achieved mainly through energy‐intensive, cryogenic distillation in industry. Sustainable, non‐distillation methods are highly desired as alternatives. We discovered that the fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand supported copper(I) complex {[(CF3)2Bp]Cu}3has features very desirable in an olefin–paraffin separation material. It binds ethylene exclusively over ethane generating [(CF3)2Bp]Cu(C2H4). This molecular compound exhibits extremely high and record ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) C2H4/C2H6gas separation selectivity, affording high purity (>99.5 %) ethylene that can be readily desorbed from separation columns. In‐situ PXRD provides a “live” picture of the reversible conversion between [(CF3)2Bp]Cu(C2H4) and the ethylene‐free sorbent in the solid‐state, driven by the presence or removal of C2H4. Molecular structures of trinuclear {[(CF3)2Bp]Cu}3and mononuclear [(CF3)2Bp]Cu(C2H4) are also presented.

  3. Abstract Cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s) are cyclic macrocycles with rich host‐guest chemistry. In many cases, guest binding in CB[n]s results in host structural deformations. Unfortunately, measuring such deformations remains a major challenge, with only a handful of manual estimations reported in the literature. To address this challenge, we have developed the public program ElliptiCB[n], which is available on GitHub, that provides a robust and automated method for measuring the elliptical deformations in CB[n] hosts. We outline the development and validation of this approach, apply ElliptiCB[n] to measure the ellipticity of the 1113 available CB[n] structures from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), and directly investigate the structural deformations of CB[5], CB[6], CB[7], CB[8], and CB[10] hosts. We also report the general landscape of accessible CB[n] elliptical deformations and compare ellipticity distributions across CB[n] hosts and host‐guest complexes. We found that in almost all cases guest binding significantly impacts the distribution of host ellipticity distributions and that these distributions are dissimilar across host‐guest complexes of differently sized CB[n]s. We anticipate that this work will provide a useful approach for understanding of the flexibility of CB[n] hosts and will also enable future measurement and standardization of ellipticity measurements of CB[n]s.

  4. Abstract. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages are useful tools for paleoenvironmental studies but rely on the calibration of live populations to modern environmental conditions to allow interpretation of this proxy downcore. In regions such as the region offshore of Thwaites Glacier, where relatively warm Circumpolar Deep Water is driving melt at the glacier margin, it is especially important to have calibrated tracers of different environmental settings. However, Thwaites Glacier is difficult to access, and therefore there is a paucity of data on foraminiferal populations. In sediment samples with in situ bottom-water data collected during the austral summer of 2019, we find two live foraminiferal populations, which we refer to as the Epistominella cf. exigua population and the Miliammina arenacea population, which appear to be controlled by oceanographic and sea ice conditions. Furthermore, we examined the total foraminiferal assemblage (i.e., living plus dead) and found that the presence of Circumpolar Deep Water apparently influences the calcite compensation depth. We also find signals of retreat of the Thwaites Glacier Tongue from the low proportion of live foraminifera in the total assemblages closest to the ice margin. The combined live and dead foraminiferal assemblages, along with their environmental conditions and calcite preservation potential, provide a critical tool for reconstructing paleoenvironmental changes in ice-proximal settings.

  5. Candida boidiniiNAD+-dependent formate dehydrogenase (CbFDH) has gained significant attention for its potential application in the production of biofuels and various industrial chemicals from inorganic carbon dioxide. The present study reports the atomic X-ray crystal structures of wild-typeCbFDH at cryogenic and ambient temperatures, as well as that of the Val120Thr mutant at cryogenic temperature, determined at the Turkish Light Source `Turkish DeLight'. The structures reveal new hydrogen bonds between Thr120 and water molecules in the active site of the mutantCbFDH, suggesting increased stability of the active site and more efficient electron transfer during the reaction. Further experimental data is needed to test these hypotheses. Collectively, these findings provide invaluable insights into future protein-engineering efforts that could potentially enhance the efficiency and effectiveness ofCbFDH.
