Title: Parallel Multi Objective Shortest Path Update Algorithm in Large Dynamic Networks
The multi objective shortest path (MOSP) problem, crucial in various practical domains, seeks paths that optimize multiple objectives. Due to its high computational complexity, numerous parallel heuristics have been developed for static networks. However, real-world networks are often dynamic where the network topology changes with time. Efficiently updating the shortest path in such networks is challenging, and existing algorithms for static graphs are inadequate for these dynamic conditions, necessitating novel approaches. Here, we first develop a parallel algorithm to efficiently update a single objective shortest path (SOSP) in fully dynamic networks, capable of accommodating both edge insertions and deletions. Building on this, we propose DynaMOSP, a parallel heuristic for Dynamic Multi Objective Shortest Path searches in large, fully dynamic networks. We provide a theoretical analysis of the conditions to achieve Pareto optimality. Furthermore, we devise a dedicated shared memory CPU implementation along with a version for heterogeneous computing environments. Empirical analysis on eight real-world graphs demonstrates that our method scales effectively. The shared memory CPU implementation achieves an average speedup of 12.74× and a maximum of 57.22×, while on an Nvidia GPU, it attains an average speedup of 69.19×, reaching up to 105.39× when compared to state-of-the-art techniques.  more » « less

  1. Computing the single-source shortest path (SSSP) is one of the fundamental graph algorithms, and is used in many applications. Here, we focus on computing SSSP on large dynamic graphs, i.e. graphs whose structure evolves with time. We posit that instead of recomputing the SSSP for each set of changes on the dynamic graphs, it is more efficient to update the results based only on the region of change. To this end, we present a novel two-step shared-memory algorithm for updating SSSP on weighted large-scale graphs. The key idea of our algorithm is to identify changes, such as vertex/edge addition and deletion, that affect the shortest path computations and update only the parts of the graphs affected by the change. We provide the proof of correctness of our proposed algorithm. Our experiments on real and synthetic networks demonstrate that our algorithm is as much as 4X faster compared to computing SSSP with Galois, a state-of-the-art parallel graph analysis software for shared memory architectures. We also demonstrate how increasing the asynchrony can lead to even faster updates. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first practical parallel algorithms for updating networks on shared-memory systems, that is also scalable to large networks.

  2. The single-source shortest path (SSSP) problem is essential in graph theory with applications in navigation, biology, social networks, and traffic analysis. The  -Stepping algorithm enhances parallelism by grouping vertices into "buckets" based on their tentative distances. However, its performance depends on values and graph properties. This paper introduces an adaptive parallel Delta-Stepping implementation with three innovations: neighbor reordering, bucket fusion, and graph type-aware selection. Tested on 11 diverse graphs, it achieves an average 7.1× speedup over serial Dijkstra’s algorithm on a 48-thread CPU server.

  3. Breadth-First Search (BFS) is a fundamental graph traversal algorithm in a level-by-level pattern. It has been widely used in real-world applications, such as social network analysis, scientific computing, and web crawling. However, achieving high performance for BFS on large-scale graphs remains a challenging task due to irregular memory access patterns, diverse graph structures, and the necessity for efficient parallelization. This paper addresses these challenges by designing a highly optimized parallel BFS implementation based on the top-down and bottom-up traversal strategies. It further integrates several key innovations, including graph typea-ware computation strategy selection, graph pruning, twolevel bottom-up, and efficient parallel implementation. We evaluate our method on 11 diverse graphs in terms of size, diameter, and density. On a CPU server with 48 threads, our method achieves an average speedup of 9.5x over the serial BFS implementation. Also, on a synthetic dense graph, our method processes 9.3 billion edges per second, showing its efficiency in dense graph traversal.

  4. Abstract Dynamic (temporal) graphs are a convenient mathematical abstraction for many practical complex systems including social contacts, business transactions, and computer communications. Community discovery is an extensively used graph analysis kernel with rich literature for static graphs. However, community discovery in a dynamic setting is challenging for two specific reasons. Firstly, the notion of temporal community lacks a widely accepted formalization, and only limited work exists on understanding how communities emerge over time. Secondly, the added temporal dimension along with the sheer size of modern graph data necessitates new scalable algorithms. In this paper, we investigate how communities evolve over time based on several graph metrics under a temporal formalization. We compare six different algorithmic approaches for dynamic community detection for their quality and runtime. We identify that a vertex-centric (local) optimization method works as efficiently as the classical modularity-based methods. To its advantage, such local computation allows for the efficient design of parallel algorithms without incurring a significant parallel overhead. Based on this insight, we design a shared-memory parallel algorithmDyComPar, which demonstrates between 4 and 18 fold speed-up on a multi-core machine with 20 threads, for several real-world and synthetic graphs from different domains.

The blossom algorithm computes maximum matchings in graphs and has been widely applied across diverse domains, including machine learning, economic analysis, and other essential data analytics applications. As data scales and the demand for real-time processing intensifies, high-performance computing solutions have become indispensable. Over the years, substantial research efforts have been dedicated to improving the sequential blossom algorithm. However, developing an efficient parallel solution remains highly challenging due to the algorithm's intricate execution patterns, sequential recursive dependencies, dynamic data structure modifications, and inefficient path search. By thoroughly analyzing existing solutions, we have identified critical issues and proposed a new parallel framework called X-Blossom. This framework eliminates recursion entirely, enables efficient searches for multiple disjoint paths, and employs a simple path table to trace paths, removing the need for dynamic graphs and trees. These efforts in algorithm development result in significant performance enhancement. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets show that X-Blossom outperforms all existing solutions, achieving up to 992x speedup compared to the fastest sequential baseline, and an average of 431x speedup over the state-of-the-art parallel solution using 8 cores. It also demonstrates excellent scalability, achieving an average speedup of 1.72x when threads double in scalability tests to 64 cores. To the best of our knowledge, X-Blossom is the fastest solution for this class of graph algorithms.
