Title: Observation of the Charged-Particle Multiplicity Dependence of σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ in p -Pb Collisions at 8.16 TeV
Bound states of charm and anticharm quarks, known as charmonia, have a rich spectroscopic structure that can be used to probe the dynamics of hadron production in high-energy hadron collisions. Here, the cross section ratio of excited ( ψ(2S) ) and ground state (J/ψ) vector mesons is measured as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in proton-lead ( pPb ) collisions at a center-of-mass (CM) energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175  nb−1 were collected using the CMS detector. The ratio is measured separately for prompt and nonprompt charmonia in the transverse momentum range 6.5<pT<30  GeV and in four rapidity ranges spanning −2.865<yCM<1.935 . For the first time, a statistically significant multiplicity dependence of the prompt cross section ratio is observed in proton-nucleus collisions. There is no clear rapidity dependence in the ratio. The prompt measurements are compared with a theoretical model which includes interactions with nearby particles during the evolution of the system. These results provide additional constraints on hadronization models of heavy quarks in nuclear collisions.  more » « less

  1. The production of the ψ(2S) charmonium state was measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN =5.02  TeV , in the dimuon decay channel. A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity ( 2.5<y<4 ). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of the ψ(2S) and J/ψ resonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the region pT <12  GeV/c . The results are compared with the corresponding measurements in pp collisions, by forming the double ratio [σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ ]Pb−Pb /[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ ]pp . It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions the ψ(2S) is suppressed by a factor of ∼2 with respect to the J/ψ . The ψ(2S) nuclear modification factor RAA was also obtained as a function of both centrality and pT . The results show that the ψ(2S) resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to ∼3 with respect to pp . Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and of RAA with higher- pT results at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions at the LHC. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  2. The first observation of the concurrent production of two J/ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( pPb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6  nb−1 . The two J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ+μ− decay channels with transverse momenta pT>6.5  GeV and rapidity |y|<2.4 . Events where one of the J/ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The pPb→ J/ψJ/ψ+X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ(pPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X)=22.0±8.9(stat)±1.5(syst)  nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J/ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σSPS pPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X =16.5±10.8(stat)±0.1(syst)  nb and σDPS pPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X =5.4±6.2(stat)±0.4(syst)  nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σeff>1.0  mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  3. The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/ψ vector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam |t| variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity, |y|<0.8 , using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sNN =5.02  TeV . This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken- x range (0.3–1.4)×10−3 . Cross sections are given in five |t| intervals in the range 0.04<|t|<1  GeV2 and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a |t| dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  4. The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B0→J/ψρ(770)0 decays is measured using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6  fb−1 , collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during the years 2015–2018. The CP -violation parameters for this process are determined to be 2 β c c¯ d eff =0.710±0.084±0.051  rad and |λ|=1.019±0.034±0.024 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This constitutes the first observation of time-dependent CP violation in B0→J/ψρ(770)0 decays. Assuming approximate SU(3) flavor symmetry, these results are combined with the previous consistent LHCb measurement to set the most stringent constraint on the penguin contribution, Δϕs , to the CP -violating phase ϕs in Bs0→J/ψϕ(1020) decays, yielding Δϕs=5.0±4.6  mrad .

  5. The first observation of the χc1 (3872) → J/ψμ+μ− decay is reported using proton-proton collision data recorded with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb−1 . The decay mode is observed for the first time, with a significance of 6.5σ . Its branching fraction is measured relative to the χc1 (3872) → J/ψπ+π− decay mode B( χc1 (3872) → J/ψμ+μ− ) B( χc1 (3872) → J/ψπ+π− ) =(1.68±0.32±0.05)×10−3 , where the first uncertainty includes both statistical contributions and systematic contributions which are uncorrelated between data-taking periods, and the second represents the systematic contributions that are correlated between data-taking periods.
