Title: Teachers’ collaborative reflections and planning on using digital and non-digital resources
This study investigates how two middle school teachers of mathematics reflected on and planned for the use of a digital collaborative platform embedded with a problem-based curriculum. As digital resources can help teachers enact mathematics problems that are responsive to the needs of their students, more empirical work is needed to understand and inform relevant teaching practices that leverage evidence of student thinking (Pepin et al., 2017). Drawing on a documentational approach to didactics (Gueudet & Trouche, 2009), we examine the influences of collaborative reflections on teachers’ decisions about the use of digital resources. Our preliminary findings show that based on their reflective conversation, teachers considered the affordances and constraints of both digital and non-digital resources in their planning. Our findings suggest collaborative reflections help teachers critically examine digital resources.  more » « less

  1. Learning mathematics in a student-centered, problem-based classroom requires students to develop mathematical understanding and reasoning collaboratively with others. Despite its critical role in students’ collaborative learning in groups and classrooms, evidence of student thinking has rarely been perceived and utilized as a resource for planning and teaching. This is in part because teachers have limited access to student work in paper-and-pencil classrooms. As an alternative approach to making student thinking visible and accessible, a digital collaborative platform embedded with a problem-based middle school mathematics curriculum is developed through an ongoing design-based research project (Edson & Phillips, 2021). Drawing from a subset of data collected for the larger research project, we investigated how students generated mathematical inscriptions during small group work, and how teachers used evidence of students’ solution strategies inscribed on student digital workspaces. Findings show that digital flexibility and mobility allowed students to easily explore different strategies and focus on developing mathematical big ideas, and teachers to foreground student thinking when facilitating whole-class discussions and planning for the next lesson. This study provides insights into understanding mathematics teachers’ interactions with digital curriculum resources in the pursuit of students’ meaningful engagement in making sense of mathematical ideas.

  2. In this chapter I report on a design research project of a digital collaborative platform for an embedded problem-based mathematics curriculum—the Connected Mathematics Project (CMP). The goal of the project is to enhance the teaching and teaming of mathematics that occurs in paper-and-pencil classrooms by leveraging the affordances of digital technologies in a digital classroom environment. In this chapter I share lessons learned for developing the digital collaborative platform for students and teachers, focusing on how the project team: (1) reimagined mathematics problems delivered in a digital collaborative platform, (2) supported a model of collaboration in the digital platform, and (3) provided students with just-in-time supports in the digital collaborative platform. To illustrate the lessons learned, I report on the iterative changes made to features of the digital collaborative platform based on analysis of project data and feedback from teachers and students.

  3. Abstract The complexity of mathematics teaching is especially evident in lessons where teachers build on students’ genuine ideas, such as problem-based lessons. To enhance teachers’ capacity for rich discussions in problem-based instruction, we have developed a unique approximation of practice: digital asynchronous simulations where teachers make subject-specific decisions for a virtual teacher avatar. The simulations are based on materials and principles from a practice-based professional development (PD) program, implemented with small groups of teachers. The self-paced simulation model offers flexibility and scalability, allowing more teachers to participate on their own schedules, but it lacks key affordances of collaborative PD. To examine how to leverage the affordances of collaborative, practice-based PD, this paper uses a design-based research approach to explicate the mechanisms in which digital simulations can support mathematics teachers’ learning about problem-based lessons. We focus on two cycles of design, implementation, analysis, and revisions of the simulation model, drawing on data from focus groups with mathematics teacher educators, prospective teachers’ performance, and teachers’ reflective assignments. The analysis illustrates how two design principles –Authenticity to the teacher’s work, andNuanced feedback– were transformed to better reflect aspects of practice-based teacher learning. We argue that self-paced, asynchronous simulations with indirect feedback can effectively emulate aspects of collaborative, practice-based PD in supporting teachers’ growth. The paper also contributes to the literature on mathematics teachers’ noticing and decision-making, examining how the two interact in simulated environments. We suggest implications for designing practice-based asynchronous digital simulations, drawing on emerging technologies.

This paper describes the development and testing of a classroom and complementary home-based intervention to build preschoolers’ spatial orientation skills, focusing on exploring implementation feasibility and initial child learning outcomes. Spatial orientation, one type of spatial thinking, involves understanding the relationship between spatial positions, using maps and models to represent and navigate through space, and using spatial vocabulary. Evidence continues to accumulate that gaining spatial skills helps overall mathematics achievement and that learning resources are needed in this field. This mixed-methods study is the third in a series of investigations that leverage a design-based implementation research approach to develop preschool resources to support spatial orientation with both hands-on and technology-based experiences. Through a quasi-experimental comparison study, treatment teachers implemented eight weeks of hands-on activities, read-aloud stories, and digital activities (including an augmented reality app) and a sample of families also engaged in complementary home-based activities. The findings suggest that the resources help teachers feasibly implement spatial lessons, and preschoolers improve their learning of spatial concepts with the use of the classroom and home-based intervention.

    Mathematics is a core component of cognition. Unfortunately, most young children and teachers cannot access research-based early childhood mathematics resources. Building on a quarter-century of research, we are developing and evaluating an innovative, integrated, intelligent, and interactive system of technologies based on empirically validated learning trajectories that provide the best personal and digital tools for assessing and supporting children's mathematics learning. This article reviews the research that guided us, then describes the design principles of the new project, justifying their selection using theory and research, and shares how the design principles helped address challenges in development. The goal is to provide teachers, caregivers, and children with high-quality resources to support early mathematics learning in the context of meaningful, motivating, challenging, and achievable experiences.
