While implementing with caution, Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds potential to help nations address pressing social issues, such as homelessness, climate change, and healthcare accessibility. With the existing and potential economic and social benefits of AI, it is crucial to integrate AI learning in undergraduate education. This paper presents the preliminary findings of a course project that engages students to learn AI by prototyping solutions to address important social issues in their communities among 120 undergraduate MIS students. Students worked in groups and developed chatbots that addressed a variety of community issues during COVID-19. A survey study shows students’ enhanced understanding and mastery of AI concepts and applications, empowerment of contributing to their communities through AI innovation, and an emerging awareness of diversity, equity, and ethical issues in the community and AI technologies. We conclude with implications of learning AI, innovation, and ethics through the lens of AI for social good.

            The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing, with significant potential to transform society. However, it faces a notable challenge: lack of diversity, a longstanding issue in STEM fields. In this context, this position paper examines the intersection of AI and identity as a pathway to understanding biases, inequalities, and ethical considerations in AI development and deployment. We present a multifaceted definition of AI identity, which encompasses its creators, applications, and their broader impacts. Understanding AI's identity involves analyzing the diverse individuals involved in AI's development, the technologies produced, and the social, ethical, and psychological implications. After exploring the AI identity ecosystem and its societal dynamics, We propose a framework that highlights the need for diversity in AI across three dimensions: Creators, Creations, and Consequences through the lens of identity. This paper presents a research framework for examining the implications and changes needed to foster a more inclusive and responsible AI ecosystem through the lens of identity.

            The rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) hold the promise of transformative benefits across industries, including construction. To navigate this changing landscape, construction students must not only harness AI's potential but also grasp its ethical considerations and potential challenges. As such, there is a growing imperative within construction education to foster AI literacy among prospective professionals. This study developed and integrated an AI in Construction course module into an undergraduate construction management course. The primary goal is to equip students with AI literacy, achieved through a comprehensive approach that encompasses both theoretical knowledge, covering essential AI concepts and their applications in construction, and practical hands-on experiences, exemplified by a project focused on computer vision for personal protective equipment (PPE) inspection. Results from the course module implementation show that students gained a basic understanding of AI fundamentals after the module, such as dataset annotation, model development, deployment, and evaluation. Qualitative feedback indicates students were motivated to explore further AI-related topics in construction, and several topics that are of their interest were identified. These findings affirm the effectiveness of the proposed module and offer valuable insights for further development and enhancement of AI-related modules in construction education.more » « less

            AI is rapidly emerging as a tool that can be used by everyone, increasing its impact on our lives, society, and the economy. There is a need to develop educational programs and curricula that can increase capacity and diversity in AI as well as awareness of the implications of using AI-driven technologies. This paper reports on a workshop whose goals include developing guidelines for ensuring that we expand the diversity of people engaged in AI while expanding the capacity for AI curricula with a scope of content that will reflectthe competencies and needs of the workforce. The scope for AI education included K-Gray and considered AI knowledge and competencies as well as AI literacy (including responsible use and ethical issues). Participants discussed recommendations for metrics measuring capacity and diversity as well as strategies for increasing capacity and diversity at different level of education: K-12, undergraduate and graduate Computer Science (CS) majors and non-CS majors, the workforce, and the public.more » « less

            Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology that has great potential in reducing energy consumption, environmental burdens, and operational risks of chemical production. However, large-scale applications of AI are still limited. One barrier is the lack of quantitative understandings of the potential benefits and risks of different AI applications. This study reviewed relevant AI literature and categorized those case studies by application types, impact categories, and application modes. Most studies assessed the energy, economic, and safety implications of AI applications, while few of them have evaluated the environmental impacts of AI, given the large data gaps and difficulties in choosing appropriate assessment methods. Based on the reviewed case studies in the chemical industry, we proposed a conceptual framework that encompasses approaches from industrial ecology, economics, and engineering to guide the selection of performance indicators and evaluation methods for a holistic assessment of AI's impacts. This framework could be a valuable tool to support the decision-making related to AI in the fundamental research and practical production of chemicals. Although this study focuses on the chemical industry, the insights of the literature review and the proposed framework could be applied to AI applications in other industries and broad industrial ecology fields. In the end, this study highlights future research directions for addressing the data challenges in assessing AI's impacts and developing AI-enhanced tools to support the sustainable development of the chemical industry.more » « less

            An increasing number of game platforms, such as Roblox, enable game creators to develop user-generated games (UGGs). Yet, these platforms often come under scrutiny for hosting UGGs that contain harmful content, ranging from sexually explicit material to Nazi-themed roleplay. Limited attention has been paid to how harmful UGGs are ideated by game creators. To address this question, we studied an online Roblox creator community, where Roblox creators collectively engage in design ideation to brainstorm design ideas for UGGs. Through an inductive thematic analysis, we found three primary ways where Roblox creators' design ideation becomes risky, including how Roblox creators generate risky game design ideas, navigate through policy boundaries to develop these ideas, and share strategies of bypassing moderation. Based on our findings, we discuss ethical and governance challenges facing user-generated games. We propose design implications to support game creators in developing ethical game design ideas and safe game designs.more » « less
