Abstract We study webs of 5-branes with 7-branes in Type IIB string theory from a geometric perspective. Mathematically, a web of 5-branes with 7-branes is a tropical curve in$$\mathbb {R}^2$$ with focus-focus singularities introduced. To any such a webW, we attach a log Calabi–Yau surface (Y, D) with a line bundleL. We then describe supersymmetric webs, which are webs defining 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), in terms of the geometry of (Y, D, L). We also introduce particular supersymmetric webs called “consistent webs, and show that any 5d SCFT defined by a supersymmetric web can be obtained from a consistent web by adding free hypermultiplets. Using birational geometry of degenerations of log Calabi–Yau surfaces, we provide an algorithm to test the consistency of a web in terms of its dual polygon. Moreover, for a consistent webW, we provide an algebro-geometric construction of the mirror$$\mathcal {X}^{\textrm{can}}$$ to (Y, D, L), as a non-toric canonical 3-fold singularity, and show that M-theory on$$\mathcal {X}^{\textrm{can}}$$ engineers the same 5d SCFT asW. We also explain how to derive explicit equations for$$\mathcal {X}^{\textrm{can}}$$ using scattering diagrams, encoding disk worldsheet instantons in the A-model, or equivalently the BPS states of an auxiliary rank one 4d$$\mathcal {N}=2$$ theory.

On supergravity and noncritical strings
Abstract Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for$$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 and$$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 super QCD, we revisit the subject of “noncritical” superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them asseven-dimensional,maximally supersymmetricgauged supergravities: the SO(4) theory for noncritical IIA and the ISO(4) theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations onS3of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integerk(which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the “noncritical” value isk= 2, while fork→ ∞ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes fork→ ∞, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of 1/k. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both “color” D4 branes and “flavor” D6 branes.

Abstract We studyd= 4,$$ \mathcal{N} $$ ≥ 5 supergravities and their deformation via candidate counterterms, with the purpose to absorb UV divergences. We generalize the earlier studies of deformation and twisted self-duality constraint to the case with unbroken local$$ \mathcal{H} $$ -symmetry in presence of fermions. We find that the deformed action breaks nonlinear local supersymmetry. We show that all known cases of enhanced UV divergence cancellations are explained by nonlinear local supersymmetry. This result implies, in particular, that if$$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 5 supergravity at five loop will turn out to be UV divergent, the deformed theory will be BRST inconsistent. If it will be finite, it will be a consequence of nonlinear local supersymmetry and E7-type duality.more » « less

Abstract Motivated by understanding the scattering of gravitons and their superpartners from extended (p,q)-strings in type IIB string theory via AdS/CFT, we study an integrated two-point function of stress tensor multiplet operators in the presence of a half-BPS line defect in$$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills theory. We determine this integrated correlator at the five lowest non-trivial orders in$$ 1/\sqrt{N} $$ at fixed Yang-Mills coupling andθangle. Our calculations are performed explicitly when the line defect is a Wilson line, in which case we find a finite number of perturbative contributions at each order in$$ 1/\sqrt{N} $$ , as well as instanton contributions. Using SL(2,ℤ) transformations, our results can also be applied to Wilson-’t Hooft line defects dual to extended (p,q)-strings in the bulk. We analyze features of these integrated correlators in the weak coupling expansion by comparing with open-closed amplitudes of type IIB string theory on AdS5× S5, as well as in its flat space limit. We predict new higher-derivative interaction vertices on the D1-brane and, more generally, on (p,q)-strings.more » « less

Abstract We introduce Ward identities for superamplitudes inD-dimensional$$ \mathcal{N} $$ -extended supergravities. These identities help to clarify the relation between linearized superinvariants and superamplitudes. The solutions of these Ward identities for ann-partice superamplitude take a simple universal form for half BPS and non-BPS amplitudes. These solutions involve arbitrary functions of spinor helicity and Grassmann variables for each of thensuperparticles. The dimension of these functions at a given loop order is exactly the same as the dimension of the relevant superspace Lagrangians depending on half-BPS or non-BPS superfields, given by (D− 2)L+ 2 −$$ \mathcal{N} $$ or (D− 2)L+ 2 −$$ 2\mathcal{N} $$ , respectively. This explains why soft limits predictions from superamplitudes and from superspace linearized superinvariants agree.more » « less

One of the few cases of AdS/CFT where both sides of the duality are under good control relates tensionlessk= 1 strings on AdS3to a two-dimensional symmetric product CFT. Building on prior observations, we propose an exact duality between string theory on a spacetime which is not asymptotically AdS and a non-conformal field theory. The bulk theory is constructed as a marginal deformation of thek= 1 AdS3string while the spacetime dual is a single trace$$ T\overline{T} $$ -deformed symmetric orbifold theory. As evidence for the duality, we match the one-loop bulk and boundary torus partition functions. This correspondence provides a framework to both learn about quantum gravity beyond AdS and understand how to define physical observables in$$ T\overline{T} $$ -deformed field theories.more » « less
