Title: Mapping Manufactured Housing Nationwide
This study uses building footprints from Microsoft and OpenStreetMap and the Python package momepy to measure the shape, size, and placement of buildings and their 5, 10, and 20 nearest neighbors across the continental United States. Using building and neighborhood morphology and machine learning estimates, we predict whether each building is a singlewide manufactured home and whether it is in a manufactured home park, informal or manufactured home subdivision, or another setting. We describe the methods used to create these predictions and discuss issues of model performance and their implications for future research, compare our estimates with the locations of manufactured homes documented in the American Community Survey and with government and private registries of these communities, illustrate their distribution nationwide, and present descriptive statistics on their demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Our findings illustrate that manufactured home parks are more common in Midwestern and Northeastern states, whereas informal or manufactured home subdivisions are more common in Southern and Western states. We find that both neighborhoods are demographically diverse but economically disadvantaged. We conclude by briefly discussing the implications of our research for state and federal housing policy.  more » « less

  1. Manufactured housing is the largest source of unsubsidised affordable housing in the United States, but the extent of this affordability varies considerably depending upon whether residents own or lease the land on which the unit sits. To date, there have been relatively few analyses of variation across the different contexts in which manufactured homes are located, including in manufactured home parks and on individual plots in residential subdivisions. This is due in part to the limited data on the location of these different community types. In this study, we leverage data from a variety of sources to examine the various contexts in which manufactured housing is sited and differences in the characteristics of dwelling units and their tenure and legal status across these contexts. To do so, we combine parcel-level records documenting land use classifications across 19 counties in Texas, 5.4 million building footprints from Microsoft and OpenStreetMap, manufactured home sales records from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs and registries of parks and subdivisions from the Department of Homeland Security and the Texas Office of the Attorney General, respectively. Using this dataset, we examine variation in the various types of neighbourhoods in which manufactured housing is common and examine the coverage of the state and federal registries of these communities, illustrating that a substantial number of parks and subdivisions are not currently documented in these registries and thus are likely not receiving sufficient government support, including for infrastructure and housing investment or emergency management response.

  2. Abstract Links between the development of early literacy and math skills are well documented. This systematic review focuses on how literacy is incorporated into informal math intervention studies for children in preschool to third grade, which has implications for researchers and those training caregivers to support their children at home. We reviewed 51 experimental or quasi‐experimental studies published from 1981 to 2021 that investigated the effectiveness of math interventions in informal learning environments with a caregiver interventionist. Findings revealed that 100% of studies included literacy in some way. We also investigated what types of literacy activities were integrated, how literacy was a part of data sources collected, and in what ways literacy was mentioned explicitly by authors in research reports. The most common literacy activity was speaking and listening, and the most frequently included literacy data source was standardized literacy achievement measures. Finally, researchers in the included studies did not detail literacy throughout their research reports. While early math interventions often integrate literacy, the research base including math interventions would benefit from more explicit rationales for their use of literacy, and caregivers should be provided information to help understand how literacy should be a part of the way they work with their child on math at home.

Despite significant evidence that housing quality plays a key role in the overall health of the population, health risks that originate at home have failed to garner direct policy attention or intervention commensurate with their impact. Drawing on the sociology of social problems, we identify how causal and political responsibility for risks in the United States context is complicated when these environmental health risks are embedded in private homes. We argue that changing how home health is addressed by health and building practitioners requires a reconceptualization of home health whereby the multiple responsible parties and sources of exposure become leverage points for future research and interventions. This reframing includes identifying housing as an arena of health, representing a class of risks tied to place. We also contend that health is an essential element of homes as systems and must be embedded in how those in building science, construction, property management, and code design approach housing. Finally, we suggest the need for specialists to navigate home health issues, drawing on the hospitalist model of health provision. These proposals illustrate multiple points at which residents, researchers, and health and building professionals may intervene and home health risks can be addressed.

This practice-oriented chapter highlights Math CEO, a university–community partnership at UC Irvine that connects middle school students from Santa Ana Title I schools with undergraduate mentors for weekly sessions of math enrichment. Its relationship‑driven mentoring, asset‑based curriculum design, and intentional integration of social‑emotional learning provide concrete strategies for building capacity in inclusive informal STEM education. Relevance and Implications for Practice: This chapter provides a practice‑based model for identifying and implementing culturally‑responsive informal pedagogical practices (CIPPs) in STEM afterschool programs. A mixed‑methods research study at Math CEO has documented reciprocal benefits: youth gain confidence, enjoyment of math, and early exposure to college life, while mentors develop instructional skills, self‑efficacy, and an interest in teaching or community‑focused careers. These dual impacts align closely with the grant’s goals of understanding how CIPPs influence both youth and afterschool staff, as well as building long‑term capacity for high‑quality, research‑informed informal STEM programming.

    Despite the wealth of research exploring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) identity and career goals in both formal and informal settings, existing literature does not consider STEM identity for undergraduate students pursuing health and medical careers through STEM pathways. We address this gap by examining the STEM identity of undergraduate STEM majors on pre-med/health tracks as it compares with that of other STEM majors, thus focusing on a population that is chronically understudied in STEM education research. We surveyed 440 undergraduate STEM students enrolled in entry-level STEM courses to assess their STEM identities and three identity precursors: interest, performance–competence, and recognition. Through regression analyses accounting for gender, major, and perceived home support around STEM, we found that pre-med/health students were more likely to have higher STEM identity and recognition scores than their peers; we did not detect a significant difference for performance–competence or interest in STEM. Although there is little tracking of pre-med/health students’ ultimate career attainment, the implications of our findings support a potential for sustaining pre-med/health students while simultaneously creating pathways to other STEM pursuits for the nearly 60% of those who do not enter medical school by offering participation in experiences that affirm their STEM identities.
