Urban rivers are hypothesized to be major transporters of plastic pollution into lakes and oceans, with storm events playing a pivotal role. However, few studies investigate microplastic and macroplastic contamination and transport across a river basin, and how it varies with flow. Here, we sampled microplastic (less than 5 mm) and macroplastic (greater than 5 mm) from four sites along an urban river in Ontario, Canada, during baseflow and stormflow. To contextualize their fate and transport through river reaches, we sampled macroplastic stored in the riparian zone, overhanging vegetation, floating in surface water and riverbed and sampled microplastic from the surface water, water column and sediment. At baseflow, most macroplastic was found in the riparian zone (ranging from 0.1 to 4.7 pieces per m2). During stormflow, concentrations (micro and macro) rise and fall with discharge. Moreover, the composition of microplastics in the water column shifts from fibre- to rubber-dominated during higher flows. The mobilization of denser (e.g. rubber) particles during flow is consistent with greater water velocities during storms. Finally, using our data and flow patterns from 2022 to 2023, we estimate that approximately 522 billion microplastic particles and 20 754 macroplastic items, equalling approximately 36 000 and 160 kg by mass, respectively, are transported to Lake Ontario annually. Storm events influence the transport of macroplastics in urban streams
Abstract Plastic litter is a globally pervasive pollutant. Storms are likely key drivers of plastic transport to oceans, but plastic transport during rising and falling limbs of storm hydrographs is rarely measured. Measurements of plastic movement throughout individual storms will improve watershed models of plastic dynamics. We used cameras to quantify macroplastic movement (i.e., particles > 5 mm) in rivers before, during, and after individual storms (N = 18) at 10 sites within three North American watersheds. Most storms showed no difference in macroplastic transport between rising and falling hydrograph limbs or evidence of hysteresis (transport rate range = 0–236 items/30 min). Total macroplastic exported during storm events was positively related to storm magnitude and was greatest at more urban sites. Thus, macroplastic transport during storms was driven by storm size and land use. The quantitative relationships between macroplastic movement and hydrology will improve discharge‐weighted calculations of macroplastic transport which can benefit modeling, monitoring, and mitigation efforts. Abstract Riparian zones, the interfaces between land and stream, perform vital ecosystem functions including transformation and retention of nutrients and sediment moving across the landscape. Although many studies assess transport through and transformation of materials in riparian zones, less is known about the direct influence of precipitation falling on these zones on material retention and transport. Additionally, few experiments can compare riparian retention to stream‐channel retention.We present a novel experimental approach to assess retention of nitrate entering as precipitation in riparian zones and compare riparian retention and movement of nitrate, other ions, sediments to and within the adjacent stream channel. We simulated an intense precipitation event with15N‐labelled nitrate as a bioactive solute and bromide as an inert tracer. This method extends tracer release approaches applied to streams worldwide and links it to processes at the aquatic/ terrestrial interface. It further allows determination of movement of materials into streams from bankside precipitation.The riparian zone removed or retained a greater proportion of nitrate than the stream relative to bromide; over half the added bromide reached the stream through a few metres of riparian zone, compared to only 0.2% of the added nitrate. Of the 0.2% that reached the stream, 30% of that nitrate was removed or retained by instream processes after travelling 60 downstream. Roughly 10% of the total15N addition ended up sequestered in the above‐ground portions of the riparian grasses by the end of the growing season, and very little of it was recovered from the soil. We saw little evidence of bulk transport of other ions or sediment from this riparian soil to the stream.Our data are consistent with the concept of high nitrate retention in vegetated riparian zones, even for nitrate falling directly upon them in the form of atmospheric deposition in precipitation.more » « less

Abstract Plastic litter is accumulating in ecosystems worldwide. Rivers are a major source of plastic litter to oceans. However, rivers also retain and transform plastic pollution. While methods for calculating particle transport dynamics in rivers are well established, they are infrequently used to quantify the transport and retention of microplastics (i.e., particles < 5 mm) in flowing waters. Measurements of microplastic movement in rivers are needed for a greater understanding of the fate of plastic litter at watershed and global scales, and to inform pollution prevention strategies. Our objectives were to (1) quantify the abundance of microplastics within different river habitats and (2) adapt organic matter “spiraling” metrics to measure microplastic transport concurrent with fine particulate organic matter (FPOM). We quantified microplastic and FPOM abundance across urban river habitats (i.e., surface water, water column, benthos), and calculated downstream particle velocity, index of retention, turnover rate, and spiraling length for both particle types. Microplastic standing stock was assessed using a habitat‐specific approach, and estimates were scaled up to encompass the study reach. Spatial distribution of particles demonstrated that microplastics and FPOM were retained together, likely by hydrodynamic forces that facilitate particle sinking or resuspension. Microplastic particles had a higher downstream particle velocity and lower index of retention relative to FPOM, suggesting that microplastics were retained to a lesser degree than FPOM in the study reaches. Microplastics also showed lower turnover rates and longer spiraling lengths relative to FPOM, attributed to the slow rates of plastic degradation. Thus, rivers are less retentive of microplastics than FPOM, although both particles are retained in similar locations. Because microplastics are resistant to degradation, individual particles can be transported longer distances prior to mineralization than FPOM, making it likely that microplastic particles will encounter larger bodies of water and interact with various aquatic biota in the process. These empirical assessments of particle transport will be valuable for understanding the fate and transformation of microplastic particles in freshwater resources and ultimately contribute to the refinement of global plastic budgets.more » « less

Abstract Storm waves transport and sort coarse gravel along coasts. This fundamental process is important under changing sea‐levels and increased storm frequency and intensity. However, limited information on intra‐storm clast motion restricts theory development for coastal gravel sorting and coastal management of longshore transport. Here, we use smart boulders equipped with loggers recording underwater, real‐time, intra‐storm clast motion, and measured longshore displacement of varied‐mass marked boulders during storms. We utilize the unique setting of the Dead Sea shores where rapidly falling water levels allow isolating boulder transport during individual storms. Guided by these observations, we develop a new model quantifying the critical wave height for a certain clast mass mobilization. Then, we obtain an expression for the longshore clast displacement under the fluid‐induced pressure impulse of a given wave. Finally, we formulate the sorting enforced by wave‐height distributions during a storm, demonstrating how sorting is a direct manifestation of regional hydroclimatology.more » « less

Abstract We report an empirical analysis of the hydrologic response of three small, highly impervious urban watersheds to pulse rainfall events, to assess how traditional stormwater management (SWM) alters urban hydrographs. The watersheds vary in SWM coverage from 3% to 61% and in impervious cover from 45% to 67%. By selecting a set of storm events that involved a single rainfall pulse with >96% of total precipitation delivered in 60 min, we reduced the effect of differences between storms on hydrograph response to isolate characteristic responses attributable to watershed properties. Watershed‐average radar rainfall data were used to generate local storm hyetographs for each event in each watershed, thus compensating for the extreme spatial and temporal heterogeneity of short‐duration, intense rainfall events. By normalizing discharge values to the discharge peak and centring each hydrograph on the time of peak we were able to visualize the envelope of hydrographs for each group and to generate representative composite hydrographs for comparison across the three watersheds. Despite dramatic differences in the fraction of watershed area draining to SWM features across these three headwater tributaries, we did not find strong evidence that SWM causes significant attenuation of the hydrograph peak. Hydrograph response for the three watersheds is remarkably uniform despite contrasts in SWM, impervious cover and spatial patterns of land cover type. The primary difference in hydrograph response is observed on the recession limb of the hydrograph, and that change appears to be associated with higher storm‐total runoff in the watersheds with more area draining to SWM. Our findings contribute more evidence to the work of previous authors suggesting that SWM is less effective at attenuating urban hydrographs than is commonly assumed. Our findings also are consistent with previous work concluding that percent impervious cover may have greater influence on runoff volume than percent SWM coverage.more » « less
