Terahertz generation of BNA derivatives
N-Benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroanaline (BNA) is currently the industry standard for terahertz generation at 800 nm using organic materials. We developed four derivatives of BNA by replacing a hydrogen atom on the benzyl substituent with either a fluorine (F-BNA), a methoxy group (MeO-BNA), a cyano group (CN-BNA), or a methyl group (Me-BNA). X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed that all derivatives were crystallized in the same space group as BNA (Pna21). The THz generation capability of F-BNA is higher than that of BNA, with the maximum Fourier amplitude increasing by an average of 14% when pumped with wavelengths of 800, 1250, and 1550 nm. The damage threshold of F-BNA was also found to be higher than that of BNA, increasing by a factor of 1.14. The phase matching of F-BNA and BNA was found to be comparable. The increased THz output is, therefore, likely due to the higher induced nonlinear polarization, molecular hyperpolarizability, and closer molecular packing of F-BNA compared to BNA.

null (Ed.)Developing efficient and robust terahertz (THz) sources is of incessant interest in the THz community for their wide applications. With successive effort in past decades, numerous groups have achieved THz wave generation from solids, gases, and plasmas. However, liquid, especially liquid water has never been demonstrated as a THz source. One main reason leading the impediment is that water has strong absorption characteristics in the THz frequency regime. A thin water film under intense laser excitation was introduced as the THz source to mitigate the considerable loss of THz waves from the absorption. Laser-induced plasma formation associated with a ponderomotive force- induced dipole model was proposed to explain the generation process. For the one-color excitation scheme, the water film generates a higher THz electric field than the air does under the identical experimental condition. Unlike the case of air, THz wave generation from liquid water prefers a sub-picosecond (200 – 800 fs) laser pulse rather than a femtosecond pulse (~50 fs). This observation results from the plasma generation process in water. For the two-color excitation scheme, the THz electric field is enhanced by one-order of magnitude in comparison with the one-color case. Meanwhile, coherent control of the THz field is achieved by adjusting the relative phase between the fundamental pulse and the second-harmonic pulse. To eliminate the total internal reflection of THz waves at the water-air interface of a water film, a water line produced by a syringe needle was used to emit THz waves. As expected, more THz radiation can be coupled out and detected. THz wave generation from other liquids were also tested.more » « less

Abstract Large crystal growth and characterization of the optical and terahertz (THz) properties of organic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal NMBA (4‐Nitro‐4′‐methylbenzylidene aniline) is presented. The reported method of crystal growth consistently produces high‐quality single crystals. The THz generation efficiency and optical properties of NMBA to other THz generation crystals including BNA and MNA are compared. The low THz absorptions that make NMBA an ideal source for THz time‐domain spectroscopy are highlighted.more » « less

Abstract Yellow organic crystals, like BNA, MNA, and NMBA, can be used to generate terahertz (THz) pulses of light through optical rectification of infrared ultrafast laser pulses. When producing THz with these organic crystals, one needs to consider that 1) their damage thresholds are low due to having low melting points and 2) Fresnel reflection losses due to multiple interfaces reduce the efficiency of the generated THz output. In this work, new heterogeneous multi‐layer “sandwich” structures are developed with these yellow organic crystals by 1) fusing them to sapphire plates to permit the crystal to withstand higher laser fluences and 2) using an index‐matching fluid (liquid crystal MBBA) to decrease Fresnel reflection losses and improve the THz output. It is shown that the sapphire plates increase the damage threshold of these yellow organic crystals by a factor of two or more, thus allowing the crystals to generate higher THz electric fields. Furthermore, it is shown that the THz light output efficiency increases by assembling the yellow crystals into multi‐layered sandwich structures. For some yellow organic crystals, the sandwich structures increase the THz intensity by more than a factor of two.more » « less

Abstract Above‐band gap optical excitation of non‐centrosymmetric semiconductors can lead to the spatial shift of the center of electron charge in a process known as shift current. Shift current is investigated in single‐crystal SnS2, a layered semiconductor with the band gap of ≈2.3 eV, by THz emission spectroscopy and first principles density functional theory (DFT). It is observed that normal incidence excitation with above gap (400 nm; 3.1 eV) pulses results in THz emission from 2H SnS2() polytype, where such emission is nominally forbidden by symmetry. It is argued that the underlying symmetry breaking arises due to the presence of stacking faults that are known to be ubiquitous in SnS2single crystals and construct a possible structural model of a stacking fault with symmetry properties consistent with the experimental observations. In addition to shift current, it is observed THz emission by optical rectification excited by below band gap (800 nm; 1.55 eV) pulses but it requires excitation fluence more than two orders of magnitude higher to produce same signal amplitude. These results suggest that ultrafast shift current in which can be excited with visible light in blue–green portion of the spectrum makes SnS2a promising source material for THz photonics.more » « less
