Title: Designing a serious game to simulate ecological processes on a post-eruption Mount St. Helens landscape.
Developing strategies to sustainably manage landscapes to meet environmental, social, and economic goals is an increasing concern in a world experiencing anthropogenic global change. Here we evaluate how our game Resilience: After The Eruption, a digital role-playing simulation game, helps us answer the question of how to design serious games to facilitate understanding of complex sustainability issues. In a simulation of the aftermath of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, players of Resilience: After The Eruption perform resource management and engage in stakeholder collaboration. Through pre- and post-gameplay surveys, we assessed user experience and whether players learn about the complexities of the natural and human phenomena that affect post-disturbance ecological recovery processes and experience the challenges of multiple-stakeholder cooperation. Players showed an overall increase in knowledge that corresponded to the desired learning objectives and generally reported a positive user experience. Our results support the idea that role-playing simulation games like Resilience: After the Eruption can be a useful tool for educating and training individuals on complex sustainability issues.  more » « less

  1. Virtual reality games have grown rapidly in popularity since the first consumer VR head-mounted displays were released in 2016, however comparatively little research has explored how this new medium impacts the experience of players. In this paper, we present a study exploring how user experience changes when playing Minecraft on the desktop and in immersive virtual reality. Fourteen players completed six 45 minute sessions, three played on the desktop and three in VR. The Gaming Experience Questionnaire, the i-Group presence questionnaire, and the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire were administered after each session, and players were interviewed at the end of the experiment. Participants strongly preferred playing Minecraft in VR, despite frustrations with using teleporation as a travel technique and feelings of simulator sickness. Players enjoyed using motion controls, but still continued to use indirect input under certain circumstances. This did not appear to negatively impact feelings of presence. We conclude with four lessons for game developers interested in porting their games to virtual reality.

  2. Idle games are a recent minimalist gaming phenomenon in which the game is left running with little player interaction. We deepen understanding of idle games and their characteristics by developing a taxonomy and identifying game features. This paper examines 66 idle games using a grounded theory approach to analyze play, game mechanics, rewards, interactivity, progress rate, and user interface. To establish a clearly bounded definition of idle games, we analyzed 10 non-idle games with the same approach. We discuss how idle games move players from playing to planning, how they question dominant assumptions about gameplay, and their unusual use of resources such as player attention and computer cycles. Our work illuminates opportunities for the design of idle games, suggests design implications, and provides a framework for researchers to clearly articulate questions about this genre.

A fully-integrated mixed reality game system called multiphysics enriched mixed reality for integrated geotechnical education (MERGE) is developed to improve student education in the context of geotechnical engineering. This work allows students to learn the design of geothermal pile in a more inclusive way while playing a game and gain an "integrated geotechnical learning experience". Several mini games are designed for students to enhance the geotechnical knowledge. Players can earn points and update their appearance by playing these mini games, which stimulates their interests in geotechnical engineering. By providing students with visualization, collaboration, and simulation tools, we hope to promote the understanding of geotechnical experiments. Based on the laboratory results, numerical experiments are conducted to help students understand the geotechnical application. The leveraging mixed reality technology offers an opportunity for students to access advanced equipment in geotechnical experiments. The main contribution of this work is a discussion of the educational technology and processes behind implementing a mixed reality educational game. We provide developmental insights and educational background to inform researchers who seek to develop similar games.

    Social robot co-design requires aiding users as they imagine these novel devices within their everyday lives and enabling designers to understand and address users’ experiences. This paper presents the exploratory development and evaluation of a role-playing game aimed at identifying the desired features and uses of a social robot that can assist people diagnosed with depression. Participants (n = 16) played the game as a character with depression, designed a companion robot for that character, and chose reactions to daily challenges. Though participants initially selected robot capabilities based on their own needs, after the game they identified alternative designs that would better address daily challenges faced by individuals with depression. We discuss aspects of the game that allowed participants to understand how various robot characteristics can address the experience of depression and suggest how role-playing games can support users and designers in identifying beneficial features and uses of emerging robotic technologies.

  5. In the physical world, teammates develop situation awareness about each other's location, status, and actions through cues such as gaze direction and ambient noise. To support situation awareness, distributed multiplayer games provide awareness cues - information that games automatically make available to players to support cooperative gameplay. The design of awareness cues can be extremely complex, impacting how players experience games and work with teammates. Despite the importance of awareness cues, designers have little beyond experiential knowledge to guide their design. In this work, we describe a design framework for awareness cues, providing insight into what information they provide, how they communicate this information, and how design choices can impact play experience. Our research, based on a grounded theory analysis of current games, is the first to provide a characterization of awareness cues, providing a palette for game designers to improve design practice and a starting point for deeper research into collaborative play.
