Title: Teaching data literacy with creativity: the Dear Data project in middle school
Building opportunities for students to interact with data in creative and novel ways builds curiosity, engagement, and data literacy skills. During participation in an NSF Research Experience for Teachers program, we focused on building our skills with data collection, analysis, and visualization. Dear Data was a key text used to help us explore data in a different way. In this article we provide three ways to implement Dear Data concepts in the middle school classroom, each with a different time commitment. We have found these activities engage students deeply, and the creativity of their work reflects this engagement.  more » « less

  1. Engagement is a multifaceted construct that can influence learning outcomes. In this ex post facto study, we examined the correlations between different engagement constructs, as well as the impact of engagement on preservice teachers’ teaching knowledge and skills. We collected and analyzed video data from fourteen individual sessions with a coding scheme for engagement in VR-based teaching practices using AI-powered virtual students, as well as a teaching knowledge and skills posttest. The preliminary findings suggested that preservice teachers’ VR movement may correlate with disengagement, while emotional engagement, particularly confusion, can support learning opportunities. Engagement observed in the current study significantly predicted teaching knowledge and skills development.

  2. As practitioners and teachers of statistical consulting and collaboration, how do we assess the effectiveness of ours and our students’ engagement on projects with domain experts? We propose that assessments of the effectiveness of statistical collaborations should be based on the four areas of attitude, skills, performance, and improvement. In this brief paper, we describe several ways for conducting assessments in these four areas and conclude with a call for the statistics and data science education community to build upon these ideas.

    As excitement for Minecraft continues to grow, we consider its potential to function as an engaging environment for practicing and studying spatial reasoning. To support this exposition, we describe a glimpse of our current analysis of spatial reasoning skills in Minecraft. Twenty university students participated in a laboratory study that asked them to recreate three existing buildings in Minecraft. Screen captures of user actions, together with eye tracking data, helped us identify ways that students utilize perspective taking, constructing mental representations, building and place-marking, and error checking. These findings provide an initial impetus for further studies of the types of spatial skills that students may exhibit while playing Minecraft. It also introduces questions about how the design of Minecraft activities may promote, or inhibit, the use of certain spatial skills.

    Working collaboratively in groups can positively impact performance and student engagement. Intelligent social agents can provide a source of personalized support for students, and their benefits likely extend to collaborative settings, but it is difficult to determine how these agents should interact with students. Reinforcement learning (RL) offers an opportunity for adapting the interactions between the social agent and the students to better support collaboration and learning. However, using RL in education with social agents typically involves training using real students. In this work, we train an RL agent in a high-quality simulated environment to learn how to improve students’ collaboration. Data was collected during a pilot study with dyads of students who worked together to tutor an intelligent teachable robot. We explore the process of building an environment from the data, training a policy, and the impact of the policy on different students, compared to various baselines.

With the emergence of data science as an inherently multidisciplinary subject, there is increasing demand for graduates with well-rounded competence in computing, analytics, and communication skills. However, in conventional education systems, computing & quantitative, and communication skills are often taught in different disciplines. Data storytelling is constructing and presenting data stories to highlight the analytical insights to achieve the communication goals to a specific audience. Digital data storytelling leverages digital storytelling techniques and best practices in communication to deliver stories that can be shared in digital formats to a wide audience. In this paper, we describe and reflect on a semester-long project-based learning pilot using Digital Storytelling as a framework to allow students to explore topics themed around human flourishing and sustainability with the end goal of constructing data stories delivered in digital or video format (i.e., Digital Data Storytelling). The pilot work was conducted in an introductory data science course at a 4-year Minority Serving Institution in collaboration with students studying non-STEM disciplines at a partner community college. Our pilot demonstrates the potential benefit of this sustainability-aware Project-Based Learning design in raising students’ awareness of sustainability issues, increasing confidence in cross-disciplinary communication competency, and at the same time deepening their understanding of data science concepts. We further reflect on the significant role of an effective program model as well as challenges and opportunities for building transdisciplinary communication competency to prepare for a diverse data science workforce.
