  1. Many bird species commonly aggregate in flocks for reasons ranging from predator defense to navigation. Available evidence suggests that certain types of flocks—the V and echelon formations of large birds—may provide a benefit that reduces the aerodynamic cost of flight, whereas cluster flocks typical of smaller birds may increase flight costs. However, metabolic flight costs have not been directly measured in any of these group flight contexts [Zhang and Lauder,J. Exp. Biol.226, jeb245617 (2023)]. Here, we measured the energetic benefits of flight in small groups of two or three birds and the requirements for realizing those benefits, using metabolic energy expenditure and flight position measurements from European Starlings flying in a wind tunnel. The starlings continuously varied their relative position during flights but adopted a V formation motif on average, with a modal spanwise and streamwise spacing of [0.81, 0.91] wingspans. As measured via CO2production, flight costs for follower birds were significantly reduced compared to their individual solo flight benchmarks. However, followers with more positional variability with respect to leaders did less well, even increasing their costs above solo flight. Thus, we directly demonstrate energetic costs and benefits for group flight followers in an experimental context amenable to further investigation of the underlying aerodynamics, wake interactions, and bird characteristics that produce these metabolic effects.

Although face masks have been used for over a century to provide protection against airborne pathogens and pollutants, close scrutiny of their effectiveness has peaked in the past two years in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The simplicity of face masks belies the complexity of the physical phenomena that determine their effectiveness as a defense against airborne infections. This complexity is rooted in the fact that the effectiveness of face masks depends on the combined effects of respiratory aerodynamics, filtration flow physics, droplet dynamics and their interactions with porous materials, structural dynamics, physiology, and even human behavior. At its core, however, the face mask is a flow-handling device, and in the current review, we take a flow physics–centric view of face masks and the key phenomena that underlie their function. We summarize the state of the art in experimental measurements, as well as the growing body of computational studies that have contributed to our understanding of the factors that determine the effectiveness of face masks. The review also lays out some of the important open questions and technical challenges associated with the effectiveness of face masks.

  4. Identifying the potential routes of airborne transmission during transportation is of critical importance to limit the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Here, we numerically solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations along with the transport equation for a passive scalar in order to study aerosol transmission inside the passenger cabin of an automobile. Extending the previous work on this topic, we explore several driving scenarios including the effects of having the windows fully open, half-open, and one-quarter open, the effect of opening a moon roof, and the scaling of the aerosol transport as a function of vehicle speed. The flow in the passenger cabin is largely driven by the external surface pressure distribution on the vehicle, and the relative concentration of aerosols in the cabin scales inversely with vehicle speed. For the simplified geometry studied here, we find that the half-open windows configuration has almost the same ventilation effectively as the one with the windows fully open. The utility of the moonroof as an effective exit vent for removing the aerosols generated within the cabin space is discussed. Using our results, we propose a “speed–time” map, which gives guidance regarding the relative risk of transmission between driver and passenger as a function of trip duration and vehicle speed. A few strategies for the removal of airborne contaminants during low-speed driving, or in a situation where the vehicle is stuck in traffic, are suggested.

  5. Inspired by bat flight performance, we explore the advantages of wing twist and fold for flapping wing robots. For this purpose, we develop a dynamical model that incorporates these two degrees of freedom to the wing. The twist is assumed to be linearly-increasing along the wing, while the wing fold is modeled as a relative rotation of the handwing with respect to the armwing. An optimization scheme parameterizes the wing kinematics for 2, 5 and 8 m/s forward flight velocities. The intricate interplay between wing orientation, effective angle of attack and the ensuing lift and thrust generation are discussed. The results show that wing twist and fold alleviate negative lift and thrust in the upstroke, and in some cases producing persistent positive thrust throughout cycle for handwing. As a result, power consumption drops precipitously compared to the base case of a rigid flat plate. Another crucial realization is the relative importance of wing twist and fold in achieving efficient flight strongly depends on speeds. At slow flight, twist is significantly more effective in minimizing the power, but becomes energetically inefficient for fast speeds. The results also show that a 45° wing fold during upstroke is energetically beneficial for all speeds. The synergy of wing twist and fold are most prominent at slow flight. These findings provides useful guidelines for designing flapping wing robots.

We study the influence of solid boundaries on dynamics and structure of kinesin-driven microtubule active fluids as the height of the container, H, increases from hundreds of micrometers to several millimeters. By three-dimensional tracking of passive tracers dispersed in the active fluid, we observe that the activity level, characterized by velocity fluctuations, increases as system size increases and retains a small-scale isotropy. Concomitantly, as the confinement level decreases, the velocity-velocity temporal correlation develops a strong positive correlation at longer times, suggesting the establishment of a "memory". We estimate the characteristic size of the flow structures from the spatial correlation function and find that, as the confinement becomes weaker, the correlation length, l_c, saturates at approximately 400 microns. This saturation suggests an intrinsic length scale which, along with the small-scale isotropy, demonstrates the multiscale nature of this kinesin-driven bundled microtubule active system.
