As part of the first stage of a community-based participatory research project with two communities in the Canadian Arctic—Kangiqsujuaq, Nunavik, and Ulukhaktok, Northwest Territories—we conducted 57 interviews eliciting residents’ perceptions of pressing issues facing their communities, problems affecting health and wellbeing, and how researchers or other organized groups could help alleviate those problems. A recurrent theme that emerged during these interviews was having “no one to talk to.” Here, we focus on understanding why communication was a central theme using a grounded-theory approach to develop a model of Inuit stress management. Inuit in both Kangiqsujuaq and Ulukhaktok codify stress as isumaaluttuq, or excess worry, which often manifests physically and leads to social withdrawal. Because stress is believed to accumulate in the body, managing it involves decisions about whether to “Get It Out” or “Keep It In.” Keep It In is a potentially dangerous strategy because, if the problem does not resolve itself, accumulated stress may have harmful consequences. Inuit viewed talking to others as the most effective means to Get It Out, but respondents also identified numerous barriers to doing so. One important reason for this is that stress is transferable: Talking to others about a problem potentially increases the burden of stress on them. Consequently, Inuit may choose to Keep It In to avoid the potential negative consequences (for others or for oneself) of sharing bad thoughts. Based on this preliminary model, we consider questions for further inquiry and implications for community-based mental health programming in Inuit communities.

  2. Liquid crystalline phases of matter often exhibit visually stunning patterns or textures. Mostly, these liquid crystal (LC) configurations are uniquely determined by bulk LC elasticity, surface anchoring conditions, and confinement geometry. Here, we experimentally explore defect textures of the smectic LC phase in unique confining geometries with variable curvature. We show that a complex range of director configurations can arise from a single system, depending on sample processing procedures. Specifically, we report on LC textures in Janus drops comprised of silicone oil and 8CB in its smectic-A LC phase. The Janus droplets were made in aqueous suspension using solvent-induced phase separation. After drop creation, smectic layers form in the LC compartment, but their self-assembly is frustrated by the need to accommodate both the bowl-shaped cavity geometry and homeotropic (perpendicular) anchoring conditions at boundaries. A variety of stable and metastable smectic textures arise, including focal conic domains, dislocation rings, and undulations. We experimentally characterize their stabilities and follow their spatiotemporal evolution. Overall, a range of fabrication kinetics produce very different intermediate and final states. The observations elucidate assembly mechanisms and suggest new routes for fabrication of complex soft material structures in Janus drops and other confinement geometries.

Objective Human dimensions of climate change research in the Arctic often proposes ways for local communities to adapt to changes to their environment, foregrounding problems posed by climate change while treating social, political, and economic factors as background conditions. We explore the relevance of this research paradigm for Inuit by examining how Inuit from Kangiqsujuaq present and discuss the major issues facing their community. Methods We thematically code and analyze the responses of 107 Inuit to three free-response questions about the problems facing their community and the best things about their community. The data were collected as part of a questionnaire for a project focused on food security and food sharing conducted in Kangiqsujuaq, Nunavik, in 2013 to 2014. Results Few respondents mentioned issues relating to climate change among the most pressing problems faced by their community. Rather, a suite of interconnected social and economic issues, particularly substance abuse and the cost of living, emerged as the main concerns of Kangiqsujuarmiut. However, the environment was a central theme in respondents' favorite thing about their community. Conclusions In light of the concerns identified by Inuit, we argue that much research on climate change makes incorrect a priori assumptions and consequently fails to capture aspects of Arctic socioecological systems that are essential for how Inuit are responding to climate change. An inductive, open-ended approach can help produce research more relevant to communities.

  5. In lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs), twist distortion of the nematic director costs much less energy than splay or bend distortion. This feature leads to novel mirror-symmetry breaking director configurations when the LCLCs are confined by interfaces or contain suspended particles. Spherical colloids in an aligned LCLC nematic phase, for example, induce chiral director perturbations (“twisted tails”). The asymmetry of rod-like particles in an aligned LCLC offer a richer set of possibilities due to their aspect ratio ( α ) and mean orientation angle (〈 θ 〉) between their long axis and the uniform far-field director. Here we report on the director configuration, equilibrium orientation, and angular diffusion of rod-like particles with planar anchoring suspended in an aligned LCLC. Video microscopy reveals, counterintuitively, that two-thirds of the rods have an angled equilibrium orientation (〈 θ 〉 ≠ 0) that decreases with increasing α , while only one-third of the rods are aligned (〈 θ 〉 = 0). Polarized optical video-microscopy and Landau–de Gennes numerical modeling demonstrate that the angled and aligned rods are accompanied by distinct chiral director configurations. Angled rods have a longitudinal mirror plane (LMP) parallel to their long axis and approximately parallel to the substrate walls. Aligned rods have a transverse and longitudinal mirror plane (TLMP), where the transverse mirror plane is perpendicular to the rod's long axis. Effectively, the small twist elastic constant of LCLCs promotes chiral director configurations that modify the natural tendency of rods to orient along the far-field director. Additional diffusion experiments confirm that rods are angularly confined with strength that depends on α .
