Mullen, Patrick (Ed.)Postsecondary readiness is critical to broadening opportunities for educational and career options beyond high school. However, Black males are often at a disadvantage to gaining access to postsecondary preparation and school counselors who can respond to their academic needs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and culturally responsive practices of school stakeholders (who are predominantly Black) from an academy of engineering (career academy). The authors used a case study approach to examine culturally responsive practices school personnel utilize to enhance the college and career readiness of Black males. Findings emphasize the role of culturally responsive practices (e.g., Black male role models from business and industry in the engineering field and school counselors), cultural matching, and the role of the advisory board in ensuring the success of Black male students. Recommendations for practice, policy, and research for Black males and school counselors are discussed.more » « less

O'Connor, Patrick ; Tremblay, Christopher ; Owen, Laura (Ed.)The purpose of this research study was to examine the ways in which stakeholders at a low-income, predominantly African American STEAM academy implement initiatives that support the college and career readiness of their students. We found that a shift in leadership efforts to ensure that academy students were prepared to be both college and career ready provided equity and access to a quality and individualized curriculum through the implementation of career academies. As a result, stakeholders believed that students were more included, valued, and engaged in the school.more » « less

Completing a series of nickel-group 13 complexes, a coordinatively unsaturated nickel-boron complex and its derivatives with a H 2 , N 2 , or hydride ligand were synthesized and characterized. The toggling “on” of a Ni(0)–B( iii ) inverse-dative bond enabled the stabilization of a nickel-bound anionic hydride with a remarkably low thermodynamic hydricity of kcal mol −1 in THF. The flexible topology of the boron metalloligand confers both favorable hydrogen binding affinity and strong hydride donicity, albeit at the cost of high H 2 basicity during deprotonation to form the hydride.more » « less

A tin-supported iron catalyst produces 5.9 turnovers of NH 3 from N 2 , using [Ph 2 NH 2 ]OTf as the acid and CoCp 2 * as the reductant. Two redox states of the Fe(N 2 ) adduct and an Fe silyldiazenido complex were characterized using X-ray crystallography along with NMR and Mössbauer spectroscopies. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the charge on the Sn center correlates strongly with both the polarization of the N 2 moiety and the charge on the distal N atom.more » « less

Abstract — Photoluminescence Excitation Spectroscopy (PLE) is a contactless characterization technique to quantify Shockley-Reed-Hall (SRH) lifetimes and recombination velocities in direct band gap experimental semiconductor materials and devices. It is also useful as to evaluate surface passivation and intermediate fabrication processes, since it can be implemented without the need for development of effective contact technologies. In this paper, we present a novel experimental PLE system for precision-based quantification of the aforementioned parameters as well as a system for which absolute PLE characterization may occur. Absolute PLE measurements can be used to directly calculate VOC for new photovoltaic (PV) material systems and devices. Key system capabilities include a continuous excitation spectrum from 300 nm –1.1 μm, automated characterization, up to 1 nm wavelength resolution (up to 60x higher than prior work), and a reduced ellipsometry requirement for post-processing of data. We utilize a GaAs double heterostructure (DH) and an InP crystalline wafer as calibration standards in comparison with data from an LED-based PLE to demonstrate the validity of the results obtained from this new system. Index Terms – photovoltaic cells, photoluminescence, charge carrier lifetime, gallium arsenide, indium phosphide.more » « less
