  1. Abstract

This study investigates boreal spring events of Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) from 1950 to 2022, revealing that cold PMM is more effective in triggering subsequent La Niña compared to warm PMM's induction of following El Niño. This asymmetry stems from the varying origins and sub‐efficacies of PMM groups. The cold PMM is primarily initiated by pre‐existing La Niña, while the warm PMM is comparably activated by pre‐existing El Niño and internal atmospheric dynamics. PMMs initiated by pre‐existing El Niño or La Niña play a crucial role in determining the efficacies of PMMs in triggering subsequent El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The strong discharge of pre‐existing El Niño hampers warm PMM's induction of subsequent El Niño, whereas weak recharge from pre‐existing La Niña enhances the efficacy of cold PMM in inducing subsequent La Niña. Comprehending not only the PMM phase but also its origin is crucial for ENSO research and prediction.

  2. The structural design of self-healing materials determines the ultimate performance of the product that can be used in a wide range of applications. Incorporating intrinsic self-healing moieties into puncture-resistant materials could significantly improve the failure resistance and product longevity, since their rapidly rebuilt bonds will provide additional recovery force to resist the external force. Herein, we present a series of tailored urea-modified poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based self-healing polymers (U-PDMS-SPs) that exhibit excellent puncture-resistant properties, fast autonomous self-healing, multi-cycle adhesion capabilities, and well-tunable mechanical properties. Controlling the composition of chemical and physical cross-links enables the U-PDMS-SPs to have an extensibility of 528% and a toughness of 0.6 MJ m −3 . U-PDMS-SPs exhibit fast autonomous self-healability with 25% strain recovery within 2 minutes of healing, and over 90% toughness recovery after 16 hours. We further demonstrate its puncture-resistant properties under the ASTM D5748 standard with an unbreakable feature. Furthermore, the multi-cycle adhesive properties of U-PDMS-SPs are also revealed. High puncture resistance (>327 mJ) and facile adhesion with rapid autonomous self-healability will have a broad impact on the design of adhesives, roofing materials, and many other functional materials with enhanced longevity.

  3. Abstract

Polyploidy (genome duplication) is a pivotal force in evolution. However, the interactions between parental genomes in a polyploid nucleus, frequently involving subgenome dominance, are poorly understood. Here we showcase analyses of a bamboo system (Poaceae: Bambusoideae) comprising a series of lineages from diploid (herbaceous) to tetraploid and hexaploid (woody), with 11 chromosome-level de novo genome assemblies and 476 transcriptome samples. We find that woody bamboo subgenomes exhibit stunning karyotype stability, with parallel subgenome dominance in the two tetraploid clades and a gradual shift of dominance in the hexaploid clade. Allopolyploidization and subgenome dominance have shaped the evolution of tree-like lignified culms, rapid growth and synchronous flowering characteristic of woody bamboos as large grasses. Our work provides insights into genome dominance in a remarkable polyploid system, including its dependence on genomic context and its ability to switch which subgenomes are dominant over evolutionary time.

  4. Abstract

Characterizing genetically distinct populations of primates is important for protecting biodiversity and effectively allocating conservation resources. Skywalker gibbons (Hoolock tianxing) were first described in 2017, with the only confirmed population consisting of 150 individuals in Mt. Gaoligong, Yunnan Province, China. Based on river geography, the distribution of the skywalker gibbon has been hypothesized to extend into Myanmar between the N’Mai Kha and Ayeyarwaddy Rivers to the west, and the Salween River (named the Thanlwin River in Myanmar and Nujiang River in China) to the east. We conducted acoustic point-count sampling surveys, collected noninvasive samples for molecular mitochondrial cytochromebgene identification, and took photographs for morphological identification at six sites in Kachin State and three sites in Shan State to determine the presence of skywalker gibbons in predicted suitable forest areas in Myanmar. We also conducted 50 semistructured interviews with members of communities surrounding gibbon range forests to understand potential threats. In Kachin State, we audio-recorded 23 gibbon groups with group densities ranging between 0.57 and 3.6 group/km2. In Shan State, we audio-recorded 21 gibbon groups with group densities ranging between 0.134 and 1.0 group/km2. Based on genetic data obtained from skin and saliva samples, the gibbons were identified as skywalker gibbons (99.54–100% identity). Although these findings increase the species’ known population size and confirmed distribution, skywalker gibbons in Myanmar are threatened by local habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation. Most of the skywalker gibbon population in Myanmar exists outside protected areas. Therefore, the IUCN Red List status of the skywalker gibbon should remain as Endangered.

  5. Abstract

DNA base editors use deaminases fused to a programmable DNA-binding protein for targeted nucleotide conversion. However, the most widely used TadA deaminases lack post-translational control in living cells. Here, we present a split adenine base editor (sABE) that utilizes chemically induced dimerization (CID) to control the catalytic activity of the deoxyadenosine deaminase TadA-8e. sABE shows high on-target editing activity comparable to the original ABE with TadA-8e (ABE8e) upon rapamycin induction while maintaining low background activity without induction. Importantly, sABE exhibits a narrower activity window on DNA and higher precision than ABE8e, with an improved single-to-double ratio of adenine editing and reduced genomic and transcriptomic off-target effects. sABE can achieve gene knockout through multiplex splice donor disruption in human cells. Furthermore, when delivered via dual adeno-associated virus vectors, sABE can efficiently convert a single A•T base pair to a G•C base pair on thePCSK9gene in mouse liver, demonstrating in vivo CID-controlled DNA base editing. Thus, sABE enables precise control of base editing, which will have broad implications for basic research and in vivo therapeutic applications.

  6. Abstract

Polymer‐derived amorphous SiCN has excellent high‐temperature stability and properties. To reduce the shrinkage during pyrolysis and to improve the high‐temperature oxidation resistance, Y2O3was added as a filler. In this study, polymer‐derived SiCN–Y2O3composites were fabricated by mixing a polymeric precursor of SiCN with Y2O3submicron powders in different ratios. The mixtures were cross‐linked and pyrolyzed in argon. SiCN–Y2O3composites were processed using field‐assisted sintering technology at 1350°C for 5 min under vacuum. Dense SiCN–Y2O3composite pellets were successfully made with relative density higher than 98% and homogeneous microstructure. Due to low temperature and short time of the heat‐treatment, the grain growth of Y2O3was substantially inhibited. The Y2O3grain size was ∼1 μm after sintering. The composites’ heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal expansion coefficients were characterized as a function of temperature. The thermal conductivity of the composites ceramics decreased as the amount of amorphous SiCN increased and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the composites increased with Y2O3content. However, the thermal conductivity and CTE did not follow the rule of mixture. This is likely due to the partial oxidation of SiCN and the resultant impurity phases such as Y2SiO5, Y2Si2O7, and Y4.67(SiO4)3O.
