Title: A Multirate Adaptive Control for MIMO Systems with Application to Cyber-Physical Security
This paper proposes a multirate output-feedback controller for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems, possibly with non-minimum-phase zeros, using the L1 adaptive control structure. The analysis of stability and robustness of the sampled-data controller reveals that under certain conditions the performance of a continuous-time reference system is uniformly recovered as the sampling time goes to zero. The controller is designed for detection and mitigation of actuator attacks. By considering a multirate formulation, stealthy zero-dynamics attacks become detectable. The experimental results from the flight test of a small quadrotor are provided. The tests show that the multirate L1 controller can effectively detect the zero-dynamics actuator attack and recover stability of the quadrotor.  more » « less

  1. We consider the problem of estimating signal attacks injected into the actuators or sensors of control systems, assuming the attack is detectable, i.e., it can be seen at the output. We show that there exists a trade-off between attack rejection and control, and that the estimator design depends on the controller used. We use dual rate sampling to enhance detectability of the attacks and we provide different methods to design the estimator. The first method is by solving a model matching problem subject to causality constraints. The second method exploits dual rate sampling to accurately reconstruct the unknown input. The third method is using a dual rate unknown input observer.We provide conditions on the existence of these estimators, and show that dual rate unknown input observers always exist if the multirate system does not have a zero at 1.

Real-time control of a fleet of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) for Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is a challenging problem concerning time delays (from sensing, communication, and computation) and actuator lag. This paper proposes a real-time predictive distributed CACC control framework that addresses time delays and actuator lag issues in the real-time networked control systems. We first formulate a Kalman Filter-based real-time current driving state prediction model to provide more accurate initial conditions for the distributed CACC controller by compensating time delays using sensing data from multi-rate onboard sensors (e.g., Radar, GPS, wheel speed, and accelerometer), and status-sharing and intent-sharing data in BSM via V2V communication. We solve the prediction model using a sequential Kalman Filter update process for multi-rate sensing data to improve computational efficiency. We propose a real-time distributed MPC-based CACC controller with actuator lag and intent-sharing information for each CAV with the delay-compensated predicted current driving states as initial conditions. We implement the real-time predictive distributed CACC control algorithms and conduct numerical analyses to demonstrate the benefits of intent-sharing-based distributed computing, delay compensation, and actuator lag consideration on string stability under various traffic dynamics.

  3. SATCOM is crucial for tactical networks, particularly submarines with sporadic communi- cation requirements. Emerging SATCOM technologies, such as low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite networks, provide lower latency, greater data reliability, and higher throughput than long-distance geostationary (GEO) satellites. Software-defined networking (SDN) has been introduced to SATCOM networks due to its ability to enhance management while strengthening network control and security. In our previous work, we proposed a SD-LEO constellation for naval submarine communication networks, as well as an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) machine-learning (ML) approach for classifying denial-of-service attacks against the constellation. Nevertheless, zero-day attacks have the potential to cause major damage to the SATCOM network, particularly the controller architecture, due to the scarcity of data for training and testing ML models due to their novelty. This study tackles this challenge by employing a predictive queuing analysis of the SD-SATCOM controller design to rapidly generate ML training data for zero- day attack detection. In addition, we redesign our singular controller architecture to a decentralized controller architecture to eliminate singular points of failure. To our knowledge, no prior research has investigated using queuing analysis to predict SD-SATCOM controller architecture network performance for ML training to prevent zero-day attacks. Our queuing analysis accelerates the training of ML models and enhances data adaptability, enabling network operators to defend against zero-day attacks without precollected data. We utilized the CatBoost algorithm to train a multi-output regression model to predict network performance statistics. Our method successfully identified and classified normal, non-attack samples and zero-day cyberattacks with over 94% accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-scores.

  4. The work provides a general model of communication attacks on a networked infinite dimensional system. The system employs a network of inexpensive control units consisting of actuators, sensors and control processors. In an effort to replace a reduced number of expensive high-end actuating and sensing devices implementing an observer-based feedback, the alternate is to use multiple inexpensive actuators/sensors with static output feedback. In order to emulate the performance of the high-end devices, the controllers for the multiple actuator/sensors implement controllers which render the system networked. In doing so, they become prone to communication attacks either as accidental or deliberate actions on the connectivity of the control nodes. A single attack function is proposed which models all types of communication attacks and an adaptive detection scheme is proposed in order to (i) detect the presence of an attack, (ii) diagnose the attack and (iii) accommodate the attack via an appropriate control reconfiguration. The reconfiguration employs the adaptive estimates of the controller gains and restructure the controller adaptively in order to minimize the detrimental effects of the attack on closed-loop performance. Numerical studies on a 1D diffusion PDE employing networked actuator/sensor pairs are included in order to further convey the special architecture of detection and accommodation of networked systems under communication attacks.

Abstract In this work, we propose a novel adaptive formation control architecture for a group of quadrotor systems, under line‐of‐sight (LOS) distance and relative distance constraints as well as attitude constraints, where the constraint requirements can be both asymmetric and time‐varying in nature. The LOS distance constraint consideration ensures that each quadrotor is not deviating too far away from its desired flight trajectory. The LOS relative inter‐quadrotor distance constraint is to guarantee that the LOS distance between any two quadrotors in the formation is neither too large (which may result in the loss of communication between quadrotors, for example) nor too small (which may result in collision between quadrotors, for example). The attitude constraints make sure that the roll, pitch, and yaw angles of each quadrotor do not deviate too much from the desired profile. Universal barrier functions are adopted in the controller design and analysis, which is a generic framework that can address system with different types of constraints in a unified controller architecture. Furthermore, each quadrotor's mass and inertia are unknown, and the system dynamics are subjected to time‐varying external disturbances. Through rigorous analysis, an exponential convergence rate can be guaranteed on the distance and attitude tracking errors, while all constraints are satisfied during the operation. A simulation example further demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed control framework.
