Title: Using Buildings as Classrooms: City of Seattle Building Tune-Ups as Curriculum for Climate Action
This presentation engaged experiences with approaching college buildings on three separate campuses as "Living Laboratories" in the Sustainable Building Science Technology bachelor's program at South Seattle College. Speakers discussed their experiences and outlined their pedagogical approaches. Conference participants discussed the possibilities and challenges of project-based forms of experiential learning, as the speakers examined the creation of initial collaborative ideas, partnerships, student responses and benefits, and a few cautions and recommendations. The speakers concluded by inviting audience members to consider how they might integrate project-based and other forms of experiential learning into their coursework and teaching.  more » « less

  1. Experiential learning is increasingly recognized as a high-impact educational practice, and reflection is an essential piece of consolidating learning from experiences, as many models of service learning and other experiential learning note. This paper addresses the mechanics of assigning reflection, with an emphasis on assignment structure. The prompt should be open-ended enough to allow students to bring elements of their experience that they may think don’t pertain to the subject at hand -- precisely because those moments are often where the greatest learning takes place. Drawing from years of experience with the Immersion Experience component of the Pavlis Honors College curriculum, this paper analyzes student reflections and offers suggestions about the structure of reflective assignments and their placement in curricula.

  2. Michigan Tech, West Shore Community College (WSCC), and Gogebic Community College (GCC) collaborate on the NSF ExLENT project aims to provide experiential learning opportunities in Mechatronics for a diverse STEM workforce. The program and its impacts are aligned with the regional economic needs of the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan areas. The emerging technology field of Mechatronics focuses on developing and implementing advanced automation for industrial applications. Thus, Mechatronics encompasses advanced fields, including robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity. Though the demand for mechatronics expertise is growing, experiential workforce development opportunities in mechatronics are limited. This project will provide ExLENT participants with experiential opportunities through an online Mechatronics Education Portal (MEP), experiential Mechatronics Practice initiatives at Michigan Tech, and a Mechatronics Industry Pathways Rotation organized at WSCC and GCC. The MEP and MP modules will be focused on the five Mechatronics pillars of Robotics, Mechanics, Electronics/Controls, Cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence. This project will leverage partnerships among three universities, three nonprofit organizations, and nine regional industry collaborators. Comprehensive program evaluation will ensure that the project meets its objectives in improving interdisciplinary Mechatronics training through experiential learning opportunities, developing a flexible and comprehensive program to promote a diverse and inclusive STEM workforce, and facilitating sustainable collaboration amongst project partners centered around Mechatronic workforce preparation and placement.

  3. Having a STEM literate society, capable of questioning and being caring and compassionate citizens of the world is vital in a global society. This project utilized place-based education (PBE) and experiential learning, via a campus or community farm, to provide college students with contextual learning experiences that enhanced content knowledge, course engagement, critical thinking skills, and civic mindedness. The research in this paper focuses on the outcomes of a second year ecological biology course, at an urban institution, that integrated an approximately six week lesson incorporating the college’s urban farm. When compared to a control group, derived of students from the previous year, students in the treatment group had greater attachment to the farm, greater knowledge around civic activities, and statistically significant increases in scientific literacy skills.

  4. IMPEL is a transformative workforce education and training program that addresses the current and projected skills gaps and requirements in data science in the US manufacturing sector. The mission of IMPEL is to facilitate lifelong learning for the production engineering STEM workforce through designing sustainable, pedagogically proven data science curricula via modular courses with interactive online learning labs and experiential project-based learning. The planned tasks for IMPEL include an online curriculum design and development targeting professionals, undergraduates and community college students interested in advancing their skills in data science in the context of Industry 4.0 and intelligent manufacturing. The project team has accomplished several main tasks towards the goals of the project in Year 1, to be detailed in this paper.

    Concurrent enrollment enables high school teachers approved by a partnering college or university to teach college-level coursework to their students. The collaborative research-practice partnership project CS-through-CE examines if and how concurrent enrollment (CE) programs can effectively broaden participation in computing for secondary students. In the CS-through-CE project two participating higher education institutions - Capital Community College (CCC) in Hartford, CT, and Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) in Marshall, MN - collaborated with the Mobile Computer Science Principles (CSP) team to train secondary teachers to teach the Mobile CSP course, and then offer the Mobile CSP course as a CE course. In this experience paper, faculty from CCC and SMSU detail their experiences recruiting secondary partners to teach Mobile CSP as a CE course, including the barriers and challenges encountered and the strategies identified for overcoming them. Additionally, participating secondary instructors from Hartford Trinity Magnet College Academy in Hartford, CT and Northeast Range School in Babbit, MN detail their experiences teaching Mobile CSP as a CE course in their high schools. They share their experiences teaching Mobile CSP as a CE course, contrast this experience to teaching the course in an Advanced Placement (AP) format, and detail the benefits they see in each modality. The experiences of the college faculty and secondary instructors in this paper are informative for any secondary or post-secondary educator interested in cultivating or expanding pathways in CS through concurrent enrollment.
