Title: Robust Kinodynamic Motion Planning using Model-Free Game-Theoretic Learning
This paper presents an online, robust, and model-free motion planning framework for kinodynamic systems. In particular, we employ a Q-learning algorithm for a two player zero-sum dynamic game to account for worst-case disturbances and kinodynamic constraints. We use one critic, and two actor approximators to solve online the finite horizon minimax problem with a form of integral reinforcement learning. We then leverage a terminal state evaluation structure to facilitate the online implementation. A static obstacle augmentation, and a local replanning framework is presented to guarantee safe kinodynamic motion planning. Rigorous Lyapunov-based proofs are provided to guarantee closed-loop stability, while maintaining robustness and optimality.     Using sampling to estimate the connectivity of high-dimensional configuration spaces has been the theoretical underpinning for effective sampling-based motion planners. Typical strategies either build a roadmap, or a tree as the underlying search structure that connects sampled configurations, with a focus on guaranteeing completeness and optimality as the number of samples tends to infinity. Roadmap-based planners allow preprocessing the space, and can solve multiple kinematic motion planning problems, but need a steering function to connect pairwise-states. Such steering functions are difficult to define for kinodynamic systems, and limit the applicability of roadmaps to motion planning problems with dynamical systems. Recent advances in the analysis of single query tree-based planners has shown that forward search trees based on random propagations are asymptotically optimal. The current work leverages these recent results and proposes a multi-query framework for kinodynamic planning. Bundles of kinodynamic edges can be sampled to cover the state space before the query arrives. Then, given a motion planning query, the connectivity of the state space reachable from the start can be recovered from a forward search tree reasoning about a local neighborhood of the edge bundle from each tree node. The work demonstrates theoretically that considering any constant radial neighborhood during this process is sufficient to guarantee asymptotic optimality. Experimental validation in five and twelve dimensional simulated systems also highlights the ability of the proposed edge bundles to express high-quality kinodynamic solutions. Our approach consistently finds higher quality solutions compared to SST, and RRT, often with faster initial solution times. The strategy of sampling kinodynamic edges is demonstrated to be a promising new paradigm.

    This paper reports on developing an integrated framework for safety-aware informative motion planning suitable for legged robots. The information-gathering planner takes a dense stochastic map of the environment into account, while safety constraints are enforced via Control Barrier Functions (CBFs). The planner is based on the Incrementally-exploring Information Gathering (IIG) algorithm and allows closed-loop kinodynamic node expansion using a Model Predictive Control (MPC) formalism. Robotic exploration and information gathering problems are inherently path-dependent problems. That is, the information collected along a path depends on the state and observation history. As such, motion planning solely based on a modular cost does not lead to suitable plans for exploration. We propose SAFE-IIG, an integrated informative motion planning algorithm that takes into account: 1) a robot’s perceptual field of view via a submodular information function computed over a stochastic map of the environment, 2) a robot’s dynamics and safety constraints via discrete-time CBFs and MPC for closedloop multi-horizon node expansions, and 3) an automatic stopping criterion via setting an information-theoretic planning horizon. The simulation results show that SAFE-IIG can plan a safe and dynamically feasible path while exploring a dense map.

  3. Sampling-based motion planners such as RRT* and BIT*, when applied to kinodynamic motion planning, rely on steering functions to generate time-optimal solutions connecting sampled states. Implementing exact steering functions requires either analytical solutions to the time-optimal control problem, or nonlinear programming (NLP) solvers to solve the boundary value problem given the system's kinodynamic equations. Unfortunately, analytical solutions are unavailable for many real-world domains, and NLP solvers are prohibitively computationally expensive, hence fast and optimal kinodynamic motion planning remains an open problem. We provide a solution to this problem by introducing State Supervised Steering Function (S3F), a novel approach to learn time-optimal steering functions. S3F is able to produce near-optimal solutions to the steering function orders of magnitude faster than its NLP counterpart. Experiments conducted on three challenging robot domains show that RRT* using S3F significantly outperforms state-of-the-art planning approaches on both solution cost and runtime. We further provide a proof of probabilistic completeness of RRT* modified to use S3F.

  4. Numerous recent advances in robotics have been inspired by the biological principle of tensile integrity — or “tensegrity”— to achieve remarkable feats of dexterity and resilience. Tensegrity robots contain compliant networks of rigid struts and soft cables, allowing them to change their shape by adjusting their internal tension. Local rigidity along the struts provides support to carry electronics and scientific payloads, while global compliance enabled by the flexible interconnections of struts and cables allows a tensegrity to distribute impacts and prevent damage. Numerous techniques have been proposed for designing and simulating tensegrity robots, giving rise to a wide range of locomotion modes including rolling, vibrating, hopping, and crawling. Here, we review progress in the burgeoning field of tensegrity robotics, highlighting several emerging challenges, including automated design, state sensing, and kinodynamic motion planning.

  5. We present a method that finds locomanipulation plans that perform simultaneous locomotion and manipulation of objects for a desired end-effector trajectory. Key to our approach is to consider an injective locomotion constraint manifold that defines the locomotion scheme of the robot and then using this constraint manifold to search for admissible manipulation trajectories. The problem is formulated as a weighted-A* graph search whose planner output is a sequence of contact transitions and a path progression trajectory to construct the whole-body kinodynamic locomanipulation plan. We also provide a method for computing, visualizing, and learning the locomanipulability region, which is used to efficiently evaluate the edge transition feasibility during the graph search. Numerical simulations are performed with the NASA Valkyrie robot platform that utilizes a dynamic locomotion approach, called the divergent-component-of-motion (DCM), on two example locomanipulation scenarios.
