Title: Vehicle-to-Vehicle Millimeter-Wave Channel Measurements at 56-64 GHz
This paper presents results obtained from a vehicle- to-vehicle channel measurement campaign carried out in the millimeter-wave band around a 60 GHz center frequency and with 8 GHz of bandwidth. We characterize a situation of two oncoming cars on a two-lane road in the campus of the Brno University of Technology. For several vehicle passes we evaluate: (1) observed root mean square (RMS) delay spreads as a function of the received power, (2) temporal decorrelation of the channel impulse response and (3) a dependency of the Pearson correlation coefficient on the received power. For the measurement campaign, a correlative time-domain channel sounder was used.  more » « less

  1. Terahertz frequency bands will likely be used for the next-generation wireless communication systems to provide data rates of hundreds of Gbps or even Tbps because of the wide swaths of unused and unexplored spectrum. This paper presents two outdoor wideband measurement campaigns in downtown Brooklyn (urban microcell environment) in the sub-THz band of 140 GHz with TX-RX separation distance up to 100 m: i) terrestrial urban microcell measurement campaign, and ii) rooftop surrogate satellite and backhaul measurement campaign. Outdoor omnidirectional and directional path loss models for both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight scenarios, as well as foliage loss (signal attenuation through foliage), are provided at 140 GHz for urban microcell environments. These measurements and models provide an understanding of both the outdoor terrestrial (e.g., 6G cellular and backhaul) and non-terrestrial (e.g., satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle communications) wireless channels, and prove the feasibility of using THz frequency bands for outdoor fixed and mobile cellular communications. This paper can be used for future outdoor wireless system design at frequencies above 100 GHz.

The Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) band (5.85-5.925 GHz) allocated for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication provides limited opportunities for high speed data transfer. Alternatively, FCC plans to allocate millimeter-wave spectrum for 5G V2V communication. In this paper, we present a novel dual-band dual linearly-polarized antenna array for both DSRC and 28 GHz communications. For each band, we optimized antenna gain and number of elements to maximize range and data rate. The designed array has dual linear polarization and is fed with a simple quarter wave transformer. Due to large available connector’s size, a Wilkinson power divider is designed to combine adjacent elements. Infinite array simulation show that the array is well matched (S11 < -10 dB) from 5.85 to 6.48 GHz, and from 17.29 to 29 GHz. The realized gain at both frequency bands is neartheoretical.

  3. Communication at mmWave bands carries critical importance for 5G wireless networks. In this paper, we study the characterization of mmWave air-to-ground (AG) channels for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. In particular, we use ray tracing simulations using Remcom Wireless InSite software to study the behavior of AG mmWave bands at two different frequencies: 28 GHz and 60 GHz. Received signal strength (RSS) and root mean square delay spread (RMS-DS) of multipath components (MPCs) are analyzed for different UAV heights considering four different environments: urban, suburban, rural, and over sea. It is observed that the RSS mostly follows the two ray propagation model along the UAV flight path for higher altitudes. This two ray propagation model is affected by the presence of high rise scatterers in urban scenario. Moreover, we present details of a universal serial radio peripheral (USRP) based channel sounder that can be used for AG channel measurements for mmWave (60 GHz) UAV communications.

  4. The 60 GHz band plays an important role for wireless signalling with extremely high data rates, both for WiFi and cellular applications. For the design and performance analysis of this band, the impact of human interactions on the propagation from transmitter to receiver has to be taken into account. While the impact of a single human body blocking the line-of-sight (LOS) has been investigated as a deterministic effect, statistical models describing the effect of multiple human bodies, acting as reflectors, on received power and delay spread are still lacking. To close this gap, this paper analyzes measurements of 60 GHz channel impulse responses in static but “evolutionary” office scenarios that involve one and two people and uses them to calibrate a ray tracer that allows the generation of a larger number of channel realizations. Regression fits are applied to the resulting channel responses to obtain an accurate characterization of human-induced power and delay variations in proximity situations where humans give rise to additional multipath.

  5. Abstract—Millimeter-wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) will be used in the sixth-generation (6G) wireless systems, especially for indoor scenarios. This paper presents an indoor three-dimensional (3-D) statistical channel model for mmWave and sub-THz frequencies, which is developed from extensive channel propagation measurements conducted in an office building at 28 GHz and 140 GHz in 2014 and 2019. Over 15,000 power delay profiles (PDPs) were recorded to study channel statistics such as the number of time clusters, cluster delays, and cluster powers. All the parameters required in the channel generation procedure are derived from empirical measurement data for 28 GHz and 140 GHz line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. The channel model is validated by showing that the simulated root mean square (RMS) delay spread and RMS angular spread yield good agreements with measured values. An indoor channel simulation software is built upon the popular NYUSIM outdoor channel simulator, which can generate realistic channel impulse response, PDP, and power angular spectrum.
