SCAIGATE is an ambitious project to design the first AI-centric science gateway based on field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The goal is to democratize access to FPGAs and AI in scientific computing and related applications. When completed, the project will enable the large-scale deployment and use of machine learning models on AI-centric FPGA platforms, allowing increased performance-efficiency, reduced development effort, and customization at unprecedented scale, all while simplifying ease-of-use in science domains which were previously AI-lagging. SCAIGATE was an incubation project at the Science Gateway Community Institute (SGCI) bootcamp held in Austin, Texas in 2018.

Abstract The bulk of research on citizen science participants is project centric, based on an assumption that volunteers experience a single project. Contrary to this assumption, survey responses (n = 3894) and digital trace data (n = 3649) from volunteers, who collectively engaged in 1126 unique projects, revealed that multiproject participation was the norm. Only 23% of volunteers were singletons (who participated in only one project). The remaining multiproject participants were split evenly between discipline specialists (39%) and discipline spanners (38% joined projects with different disciplinary topics) and unevenly between mode specialists (52%) and mode spanners (25% participated in online and offline projects). Public engagement was narrow: The multiproject participants were eight times more likely to be White and five times more likely to hold advanced degrees than the general population. We propose a volunteer-centric framework that explores how the dynamic accumulation of experiences in a project ecosystem can support broad learning objectives and inclusive citizen science.more » « less

This article examines the ways secondary computer science and English Language Arts teachers in urban, suburban, and semi-rural schools adapted a project-based AI ethics curriculum to make it better fit their local contexts. AI ethics is an urgent topic with tangible consequences for youths’ current and future lives, but one that is rarely taught in schools. Few teachers have formal training in this area as it is an emerging field even at the university level. Exploring AI ethics involves examining biases related to race, gender, and social class, a challenging task for all teachers, and an unfamiliar one for most computer science teachers. It also requires teaching technical content which falls outside the comfort zone of most humanities teachers. Although none of our partner teachers had previously taught an AI ethics project, this study demonstrates that their expertise and experience in other domains played an essential role in providing high quality instruction. Teachers designed and redesigned tasks and incorporated texts and apps to ensure the AI ethics project would adhere to district and department level requirements; they led equity-focused inquiry in a way that both protected vulnerable students and accounted for local cultures and politics; and they adjusted technical content and developed hands-on computer science experiences to better challenge and engage their students. We use Mishra and Kohler’s TPACK framework to highlight the ways teachers leveraged their own expertise in some areas, while relying on materials and support from our research team in others, to create stronger learning experiences.more » « less

In the face of the rising prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) in daily life, there is a need to integrate lessons on AI literacy into K12 settings to equitably engage young adolescents in critical and ethical thinking about AI technologies. This exploratory study reports findings from a teacher professional development project designed to advance teacher AI literacy in preparation for teaching an AI curriculum in their inclusive middle school classrooms. Analysis compares the learning experiences of 30 participating teachers (including Computer Science, Science, Math, English, and Social Studies teachers). Results suggest Science teachers’ understanding of AI concepts, particularly logic structures, is on average higher than their non-Science teacher counterparts. Teacher interviews reveal several thematic differences in Science teachers’ learning from the AI PD as compared to their counterparts, namely learning from reflective discourse with diverse groups. Findings offer insights on the depth and quality of Science teacher AI literacy after participating in an AI teacher PD, with implications for future research in the integration of AI education into Science teachers’ inclusive K12 classrooms.more » « less
